I have to tell you, the whole way they are handling the start of EE comes off as very amateurish.

It's not the fact that they delay, it's how they refuse to bit the bullet and just delay it long enough to assure it's a real functioning game worthy of a subscription.  I mean, the very day when EE was supposed to start they post saying they don't know if it will launch...

    Totally confidence building....

    Annoying.

I've played many games (several dozen in fact) in both Alpha and beta stages, and they do not all suck, have dated graphics, or have big budgets.

I compare PFO to its closest competition Life is Feudal.  Both are small companies (although PFO has a larger backer in Paizo). Both have small budgets in comparison to other MMOs in development.  Both started their Alpha within the last 6 months.

Looking at LiF it appears that they are using a better graphics engine, than Unity.  Their animations are smoother, sound is better, skill system is more developed, etc...

PFO feels like it is stagnated in its first month of development.  My suggestion is to give it another 4-6 months, then revisit it.

I'd like to note with LiF they have 75% positive reviews.

Pathfinder online at this point is a piece of junk, and I've only heard positive reviews by the most dedicated/delusional fanboys in the community. I've talked with settlement heads inside and outside my alliance and they all say they are having trouble keeping people around once they see how terrible this game is.

I paid into PFO because GW touted their Paizo backing and professional developer experience. PFO may have some professionals on the team but with Ryan Dancey at it's head this game feels like amateur hour.

They promised a game with the minimum content needed to be fun but with relatively few bugs. What we have instead is a bug ridden pile of garbage constantly releasing new content that doesn't work, where as LiF is everything PFO promised to be. My advice, if this title sounds interesting to you check out Life is Feudal. It's like PFO but actually good.

I would have had more fun burning the 35$ I pledged, rather than having supported this pile of donkey dung.

But now that I think of it,  if this game really was a pile a donkey dung, I'd at least have got some money's worth from fertilizer.

I'd encourage those who are very dissatisfied with this game who want to see the developers feet held to the fire post about it at:

    http://paizo.com/paizo/messageboards/paizoPublishing/licensees/pathfinderOnline

Thats the board the PFO devs mainly used and it's got a small community of the same individuals telling the PFO devs they are doing everything right and need to stay the course.

Unfortunately people who hate this game don't tend to stick around and post on the boards and it leads to the perception in the community that the response to this game has been positive. If you put money in, and you're pissed with what they gave you for it, let them know.

I am very disappointed in PFO.

Not much more to add to that because it has all been said.

There are going to be malcontents in any community. Reality is that despite what the dev may say this game is in alpha right now and anyone expecting any polish at all should stay far away from it until open enrollment starts. Early Enrollment is for people who want to help build the game and don't mind paying a sub for the privilege. This is probably a much smaller group than the game's real target audience. The sub is a form of continued crowdfunding. It is not supposed to deliver 100% value of a finished game.  Admittedly Ryan Dancey's trying to oversell the readiness of the game and refuse to come out and say that it's still in an alpha state is not helping with this confusion.

Personally I'm just going to wait and see.

  • finnelhirfinnelhir Member UncommonPosts: 36

PFO can be a good game, but is far from...

But i'll wait for the polishing.

    Maybe, so..i'll give money.

    Dude..where is my booze?

They just announced the next patch will be next Thursday and live could launch 48 hours later.

Well it failed its "smoke test' so that launch of Early Enrollment (Paid Beta) has not happened.  This is even worse than it might sound.  Their intention was to launch but the stuff that was previously broken, and I assume they were working on, is still broken.

Ryan Dancey is in no position to make announcements of launch dates.  I had suggested that they avoid dates all together and use build numbers instead.  This way all they have to say is "We will be testing a new build on Thursday".  If that fails, it is a build that failed, not a launch date delayed.

Based on what I read on the alpha 13 patch,  they updated quite a bit along with some major fixes. Just because they didn't fix major stuff in the very first patch possible doesn't mean they're not working on it, this isn't even open to the public yet afterall. It'd be different if it was the live game, or even early enrollment if they didn't release major fixes as soon as possible. But that isn't the case - they simply did it as soon as they felt comfortable with the fixes and all at once.

Don't complain and say a game sucks because something is broken before the game is even available to the public and early in development. Wait and see if the game is any good for yourself, not just immediately judging it.

    No, wrong.

I'm not complaining about a game in Alpha.  That's silly.

I'm complaining about a game that will go live in two weeks with major flaws that will not be fixed by then.

Something sounds wrong there. The game's in Alpha, and it's going live in 2 weeks? Live as in, retail, where anyone and everyone can buy and play it?

So, what, they're just going to skip Beta completely, and go straight to launch?

That sounds off. Actually... gonna go look into this... BRB :p

Okay... So, based on the FAQ here, yeah... I think you've completely misunderstood the development process they're following for this game. Or, you've built up an idea of what you expected the process to be like in your own head, and now feel slighted because they're not following it.

I think you should read that FAQ, and relax :p.

Been in alpha and will be in EE and I must say the game is very bland currently.  I like their ideas but the implementation is off and there simply is no fireworks with the game, bland.  I hope they can get it all worked out in time.

Oh man...  I don't even...  I was a VERY excited backer of BOTH Kickstarters.  All said I've spent well over $200 on this game.  I was in baby!

Then I logged in to EE.

I made it about 30 minutes before I logged off in disgust.

The next day I breathed deep, amped up the testicular fortitude and put on my muck-raking boots and logged back in again.  I want SO badly to like this game.  I looked for hours for something, ANYTHING to make it worth playing.  It's just garbage.  I mean, to get something as basic as the Destiny's Twin perk set up properly you need to magically know to check a certain GW blog post and follow the EXACT instructions how to do it or it will break and they WILL NOT FIX IT for you.  I saw a dev on the forums literally tell someone that they wouldn't fix it even though the fault is their broken crapheap of a game.  I mean, jesus man...

Hideous graphics I can deal with if the gameplay is good.

Noxious UI that an aspiring graphic artist in high school could have knocked out in a week?  I'm losing faith.

Character customization right out of a early 90's single player game?  Meh.

Confusing, utterly unexplained gameplay mechanics?  Well, at least there were a few un-marked NPCs that told you about 1/100th of what you need to know.  Hope you like google and asking questions on forums to find out how to do basic things that are intuitive in even the worst MMOs.  I mean, this is worse than early Mortal Online.  I never thought I'd say that about anything!

Combat that is desperately trying (and failing) to be up to par with ancient progenitor MMOs.  Well, I knew mostly what I was getting here, so I can't complain too much, but holy god is it clunky as hell in every respect.

Crafting.  This is a joke right?  They'll be adding the real crafting when they've stopped laughing at us right?  Right?  Guys?

And on top of this crap sandwich, they expect us to PAY when our sub runs out?  That's just hilarious.  YOu couldn't pay ME to spend any more time on this miserable failure.  God, what a waste of money and time.

I hope the Devs, particularly the CEO of Goblin Works (Ryan Dancey) or better yet the CEO of Paizo (Lisa Stephens) reads your post and understands you hold the majority view of the average MMO player.

This effort might very well end any chances of an MMO being built around the Pathfinder franchise again, unless they do a near complete reboot of the game and it's vision.

Couldn't disagree more.  If they doubled down on the PvE and added tons of dungeons with mats that you can only get from in there and made the dungeons available to be PVP, a huge problem would be solved.

They have a starter PDF to tell you what to do.  The game is still heavy in development.  The problem isn't that the game is unfinished which is the guy above's problem, it's the fn business model.  They're asking for too much for what the game is.  5 or 10 sub and the buy in should be 20 bucks

I will no longer dump another dollar on an unpolished game. AA was my last purchase and this game has ALOT less then that. I don't have alot of time anymore so no more unpolished, money grubbing games for me thank you very much. Game makers without proper funding are giving away far to much and making the games they are developing unbalanced and Pay2Win orientated just to get their games made. Fun as it may be for a few months, it is not going to sustain most for a longer duration and that is why dumping money into unfinished games makes no sense to me. For the 3 months I'll play it, it will be the game in its worst state and then I've already moved on. I'm someone who will stick to a good game with good people. I played EQ1 for almost 10 years and even that game had issues in the first few. Now with so many more choices then that it makes no sense to me anymore to keep spending money on 3month chucks.

Their target market is not 'typical MMO player'. They're not chasing WoW. Read the design documents. Read what they have planned.

Example, for a single Settlement to be truly functional, you'll need around a few hundred characters assigned to different tasks. To have an uber settlement, you'd need 1300 characters assigned to the task (everyone has a 'queue' that can be allocated toward crafting or supporting an aspect of a Settlement). Given that they're largely following an EVE single universe architecture, that shouldn't be unfeasible.

Also, this is a community game. If you haven't connected with one of the many communities that exist within the game, you're going to have a REALLY hard time. This game has a lot of depth to the mechanics, and the UI, in it's current stat, is not conducive toward fully keying in the unstudied player into how everything works. Community by and large have done extensive write ups and are more than willing to help in their respective Mumble/Team-Speaks.

In regards to crafting, you're choices are as follows:

    1) Slowwww progression through solo play and self-gathering, splitting your xp between multiple gathering, refining, and crafting professions. This is insane and foolish to do.

    2) Join a community and specialize. Many of the communities have organized entire systems around supporting crafters, providing materials and recipes.

    3) Wait until coin sinks are implemented. This will provide an added reason to sell goods on the AH. Once resources, recipes, and finished goods have a more concrete value outside of the current barter system, it'll be easier for crafters to buy the resources they need off AH for coin.

IDEALLY, you would do #2, because as I mentioned earlier, this is a community game. Soloing is very doable, you'd just have to be a specific personality type that truly enjoys a challenge to enjoy it. IMHO, community is what made this game addictive and enjoyable for me.

Although every active settlement is crafting, and most are up to crafting tier 2 gear at this point, the bottom line is the market the market demand for goods is very low.

Two issues are impacting the stagnant item market, low population and the lack of item loss.  I have been playing since day one, and I have only died 8 times, 7 times in PvP and 1 time in PvE.  The gear I started with is still good for another 12 deaths, I lost nothing in the PvP / PvE deaths.  If my experience is anything close to most other players, who are these crafters actually making stuff for?  How long before everyone has Tier 2 + 5 gear and little need to ever replace it?

Rather than a coin sink, they need to move to higher decay of durability, it was supposed to be 25% and not the 5% it is now.  They may also want to discard the item threading and go to a full loot system.  Allow for damaged items to be recycled for a small portion  of their materials.

    Increase PVP, Increase Durability Loss

    Threading Is a Good Idea

Crafting Takes an Immense Amount of Time Per Item, this is not typical MMO crafting

Once they add PoI, PVP will almost certainly increase

Also, are you wearing anything other than Plate?

How often do you seek out PVP?

What type mobs are you fighting?

I wouldn't be surprised if you had little death if you wore plate and fought goblins.

    1.  Yes and yes

    2.  No it is not, certainly not for crafters

    3.  Shorten crafting time to something more reasonable

    4.  Yes, outpost raiding may in fact be the main savior for this game.  That is if Care Bears don't ruin it.

    5.  I'm a Rogue I wear Rogue Armor and use Rogue weapons.  Although I have now switched to Longbow and Staff since PvP favors those and 80% use Energetic Field Buff bug to their advantage.

    6.  I am prepared to PvP every time I log in.  Last night for instance, we captured 3 towers with one being contested,  We then went to the monster hex on Golgotha's mountain and ran that escalation for about an hour and a half.  During that entire time, we only saw ONE other player.  We could have easily ganked him, but we were unsure who he was.

    7.  Reds and Purples in monster hexes, and Bandits (subterfuge), Ogres, Wolves and Goblins.

i have had few deaths because I pay attention to what I'm doing, I assess my targets before I attack and I travel in a group as often as possible.

Not too sure about threading.  On one hand it does hurt the crafting and economy.  On the other hand, when people really fear losing their equipment they tend to not use it and run around naked or with as poor equipment as possible.

It will have to be a balance.
