Star Citizen: FPS Module Revealed at PAX Australia

BMunchausenBMunchausen Staff WriterMMORPG.COM Staff Posts: 400

Today Cloud Imperium Founder Chris Roberts wowed Melbourne audiences at PAX Australia by giving them a glimpse of Star Citizen's FPS Module. Gameplay footage of the upcoming space sim demonstrated just how the $59 million raised in its crowdfunding effort is being spent.

The footage shows a space station attack as well as what happens during combat in a zero gravity environment. Star Citizen is currently in development by Denver development team, Illfonic, and is still a long ways from its 2016/17 release. For more information, check out the Star Citizen website.

For a peek at the new FPS module, check out the video below.

lol.. if you would have listened to the stream you would know they said the motion capturing for the FPS module release is next month. So, thanks for pointing out the obvious

While it is obvious there are still things missing it is looking pretty good for a game that according to some people is a scam and doesn't exist.

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

I wish they were aiming for seamless player controlled landings not cutscene crap, it would be nice to have a large living galaxy rather than lobby modules connected via cutscenes.

Uh??? you sure we were watching the same video?

Actually 'No Man's Sky' looks 100 times better than 'Star Citizen'. You can also land on planets and fly into space from a planet seamlessly. Also you can go on foot from your space craft.

    Check it out http://www.no-mans-sky.com

The best part of it is that this is a game that will be releasing unlike the vaporware that 'Star Citizen' is.

Nice plug and it looks like it could be very cool.

But I'm sorry it isn't in the same ballpark as SC.

Nope it isn't. It is in a league of its own. Build on its own engine to actually deliver that seemless experince, that is just not possible with the engine SC is using, not even if they mod it to hell.

Star Citizen isn't Vaporware. I have full confidence it will come out eventually...

What it is, however, is a new type of dreadware altogether, the term I've coined for it is 'LEECHware'. Software that delays its release to capture as much crowd-sourcing as possible especially at premium prices.

'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.

No game is more fun than the one you can't play, and no game is more boring than one which you've become familiar.

Checked the website and it doesn't have  gameplay vieo which shows seamless experince in action. You people are gullible.

For all we know that one video made for advertisement purposes is all doctored up to generate interest. When they have actual gameplay to show off come back again to tell us about it.

So No Mans Sky has like 3 trailers 0 actual gameplay, no release date, subpar gfx compared to SC and Elite and we dont even know how multiplayer aspect will work.

Also dev team made Joe Danger and that is about it.

On the other side you have Star Citizen with Chris Roberts, god of space sims (along with David Braben) with 280 employees. We have actual working hangar and  playable Arena Commander with FPS coming and Planetside.

Chris and his team talk with players and backers every week, had couple of shows around world and give us tons of info.

Oh yea and budget of only 60 + million.

So yea Star Citizen sure looks like vaporware more than No Mans Sky. Get your facts straight before you start spreading misinformation.

Seems to me they are trying to be everything.  The only thing that happens in this case is the game becomes just mediocre.  Chris should be concentrating on getting the space action down, forget putting in a less than optimal FPS module, that is flat out stupid!

As to "No Mans Sky", talk about vaporware....you have to be pretty gullible to sign on to a project.  They might have great ideas, but no substance.  Lot's of games have had great ideas, but failure to implement such is very common in the industry.  Come back to us when there is significant substance to that game.

Damn if you do and damn if you don't.

If he released only with space part people would moan why no ground combat.

The more time goes on the more it looks like less MMORPG and more like FPS.

The main difference is that they are finansing development themselfs, so, no game no money. That should be a pretty good incentive for them to actually get something done...

I wasn't completely blown away by the demo, but then I realised in my mind I am comparing it to games that are already out. I think the Star Citizen demo is a great feat if you look at what it is - a super early version of a FPS module they haven't been working on that long (1-2 years).

If any of you are SC backers, you know that the game has evolved a lot. From a hangar last year, to dogfighting this year, racing module added looks awesome. Next to that the whole hangar has been reworked and the same can be said about dogfighting. SC is an example of a really well lead project - they are constantly delivering new stuff, but not sacrificing the old.

I am confident that the FPS is actually not taking away too many resources from the space stuff. The way I look at it is we are going to get an awesome space sim, with a really decent FPS on top. There definitely is room for improvement, not denying that. But it would be a lie to say they aren't constantly improving what they already pushed out.

Stylized graphics that don't require a $500 video card to look good aren't 'subpar'. No release date? Oh yeah, because we know that RSI has kept to every deadline and date they've given so far, right? Remember when SC was supposed to be released this year? And now it's what, a minimum of two years away? Yeah, pot meet kettle.

Chris Roberts made ONE open ended space sim. The rest were mission-driven games focusing on a storyline. Yes, Freelancer opened up at the end, but until you unlocked areas via the story, you were on rails. So while the name isn't meaningless, it certainly isn't worth what you think it is. Oh, and three little words: Wing Commander Movie. 'Nuff said.

Inexperienced, independent (and otherwise) dev teams are at the forefront of video game development today. Plenty of fun, innovative games have come from them, and many more are due to arrive in the next few years.

Working hangar = model viewer. Big deal, something like that can be integrated into a website. Arena Commander? Not only did it miss a couple release dates, but it's about as bare-bones as it gets. Two years, over 60 million dollars, 250+ employees, and that's what they can do? Yeah, not something to brag about.

Talk is cheap. I can share info about this amazing game I'm making, and all the awesome features it's going to have any time I want. Doesn't mean its worth a damn.

Budget =/= good game. Elite Dangerous is nearly finished, and on maybe a tenth of the budget. Plus, need I remind people that RSI's money comes from the pockets of those who keep shelling out for virtual ships for a nonexistent game?

Star Citizen isn't vaporware. It'll come out someday, but Duke Nukem Forever style: Outdated and surpassed by those which came before it.

Oh, and in general, a backer of SC really has no place calling anybody gullible. Couldn't believe I read that.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

We are born of the blood. Made men by the blood. Undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open. FEAR THE OLD BLOOD.

So, they took CryEngine 3, already a fully functional FPS engine and made a mod for it. Good for them. Not really that impressive though...

SC feels really shitty. i' ve seen better cs student demos. not with the next gen gfx, but better fly models and lot more fun. they can' t even get controls (and input devices) right. there is no solid base nor something "with so much potential" - its a demo, a seriously good looking but shitty demo.

now the fps module ? nothing learned from eve&dust.

sc has allready the biggest fan boy community, but worse than with every other game. everyone has to defend the initial ship cost they shelled out for stuff they can see sitting in a hangar.

if you want a multiplayer scifi sim play elite dangerous with friends.

  • SpottyGekkoSpottyGekko Member EpicPosts: 6,916

Yup, it seems that SC is THE game to hate currently !

It has everything anyone can be jelly of:

    • Most successful funding campaign in gaming history.
    • "Celebrity" developer at the helm.
    • Frequently misses deadlines.
    • Promises to be revolutionary and amazing.

MMORPG.COM should add a new tab to the frontpage, right next to the "Most Popular" list.

We need a "Most Hated" list !

It's not a lobby game since you actually have to travel to places. Something is not "a lobby module" unless you can get there by pressing a button on a group finder that then teleports you there with a bunch of people who also pressed the button.
