Get the end game right. And you will have a successful MMO as it's not a cartoon for a start.

Don't just do another pvp MMO. It will fail

It has a single player and "friends" mode so you can avoid pvp altogether.

I like that they are innovating and mixing ideas with combat.  It does sound like you need to play it to really understand.  It reminds me of feats in DnD.

Just a small correction, it's Camelot Unchained, not Camelot Unleashed.

I thought it was called Design Documents Online.

"Lord British's" last game, Tabula Rasa, folded under in less then a year so I'm not holding my breath for anything with his name attached to it.

The only problem with this game is the PvP element, at least you can make it so you only play with friends, but that's not an MMO.  I've said it a million times, and I'll say again open world pvp just doesn't work anymore.  It worked back in the 90s because people back then would police the idiots.  There are far too many griefing idiots in today's gaming community.

This game is anachronistic, I can spend my money better!

I actually really like the idea of PVP and how they're implementing community impact on your experience, they leave it up to you in a moment to moment way. Haven't seen that really since SWG, everything else is almost always all or naught.

I would not call it a PVP heavy game at all.. there are PVP zones of course but you dont need to go nito them at all.. and then sadly its not even full loot like ultima online so pvp is kind of pointless at the moment anyway.

this is not an open world game and so far I ahve avoided the pvp areas no need to enter them from what I have seen, but I have not really tested it that much.

But you are very wrong about open world pvp games.

The author seems to have missed out the only 1 really good upcoming crowdfunded MMO which is The Repopulation

I do check out SotA every now and then and it still looks really awful - even Tabula Rasa looked better and that was his last massive flop!

I am still unsure why a man who can afford to pay for himself to go to space can't fund his own next "big money maker" if SotA is that much of a sure thing. I will happily help fund games from devs with little of their own money - but not multi millionaires

WoW, seriously?  Endgame is all about raiding?  Yawn.  Anyways, SotA only has one persistent world, so no shards/servers that physically segregates players that you need to pay to migrate

There are 39k backers (some with duplicate or triplicate accounts -- yes, self admitted in the forums), not 132,000 backers. Good to know the article starts off with its facts in order.

You are going to have to be a dedicated Garriott fan to play this game. From what I have tried, it is really bad quality both in graphics and game design.

You sound like you have no idea what a MMO should look like with graphics, being an artist it looks fine to me for a MMO....

Game Design its different so I think thats a good thing, its great for people who actually want to think a little. The only issue I see is the combat is dated it needs to be fixed, but I HEARD they plan to fix, update it. So again thats your opinion and I disagree with what  you said.. When people say stuff about graphics I normally laugh because if they did super high end, most gamers would get  upset and they would lose money, so having good but not great graphics for a MMO is smart business , anyone who plays a games for just looks, has no idea what a game really is about or should be played...

Graphics should come in the middle of development, not the top..

No mention that the game world consists of a few hundred created scene instances and the other 4000 are just generic generated  lifeless looking instances.

If you enjoy watching instance loading screens this the game for you.

But if you expect to travel and play on a full 3D world  this does not have that, you have to enter an instance from a map overlay instance loader to actually do anything.

Is that Open Deck/Locked Bar/Hybrid bar distinction decided by the player in all instances or is it dependent on server or content? I regained interest in the game, after first losing it when I learned that open world PvP would be relegated to a few areas with no looting, when I heard of the Open Deck trading card game style of combat.

Partly because I like that sort of combat but also because it seems like a good way to deal with macroing and multiboxing. If people around me suddenly has the choice of playing with a set toolbar, while I use an everchanging one,  the game just got a whole lot unsexier. If people have the option of choosing a server where everyone uses one of the options I have no problems with it though.

    Opened Nov 7 2007 and Closed February 28 2009.
His name also has all the Ultima's attached to it. Not a huge gamble at all to what could be a great game.

edit: Nothing to sneeze at or make light of. The mans accomplishments and name have made a huge impact on the gaming we know today.
