He's just expressing some reservations about the "funds pledged" number.
There is something weird going on there - like, it includes subs/interest/investments or other nonsense. It stretches credulity to claim people are discovering the game for the first time and pledging funds.
I think the number is padded - not that it matters.

(there are older versions of the financial information too ... on the website and also (in UK) on government boards, as they got some government support when they opened their UK studio. You will find some of these numbers in older posts here.)

It was sarcasm and not meant to be taken literally. As in, he doesn't have an actual treasure pile either does he?
Or... DOES HE?

Me seems you might view yourself as "normal".
Are you sure about that assumption ? ;-)

Good point, I'm rarely accused of being very normal, especially since my friends and family know I'm rooting for a zombie apocalypse to happen.
Err, SC make any announcements about adding in space zombies maybe?

Don't get me started! People actually put down zombies as a genuine reason when surveys ae done of what could end the world, it rates up there with nuclear weapons and pandemics, they can't all be pulling the surveys leg. Bonkers.
Final Fantasy 14 has almost 50 million subscribers, which means they earn in 'donations' per month what SC has taken 10 years to raise.
Final Fantasy also has space ships.
While FF14 is very successful, i would like to see some numbers backing up your claim.
Matsuda-san seems to be less optimistic:
".... While that's nice to see, the publisher's video game division (or
"digital entertainment," as it's known in the report) had its issues,
admitted president Yosuke Matsuda.
"The High-Definition (HD) Games sub-segment struggled,..."

Yeah, we both have the same issue here - the numbers smell funny. Simply Google: "number of final fantasy 14 subscriptions"
If SC is going to include subscriptions under "funds raised" then I'm going to include FFXIV subscription under "funds raised". FFXIV is raising more money in two months than SC in 10 years.
FFXIV also has spaceships, I don't think you can fly them, but hey...they share that problem.
Also, I know the SC Fanbois have had it rough for many years. No need to be defensive, after all, I bought a lifetime sub to Fractured Online. It isn't like my track record is going to win me any internets.

If you scroll up in this thread you find a link to Star Citizen financials posted by me.
I asked if you have something similar.
Number of subscriptions is one thing. The profit from these subscriptions is another.
Matsuda-san seems to be less happy than you are. And he is the president of that company.
I agree that FF14 is very successful. But maybe it makes less profit than you think. If you have the numbers to back up your claim, let see them.

The confusion over what numbers mean is kind of my point.
Using the link provided by you, I see that much of the income is sales and some of it is subscriptions. That is something different than the 'funds raised' vernacular of a kick-starter.
So is the $600 million 'funds raised' for a kick-starter or is a cumulative income statement?
The difference matters because a kick-starter that generates so much hype as to get 600 million in donations is altogether different than a cumulative income statement. Of course as long as they have paying subs that number will go up - but I'm guessing those aren't donations for a vision but payment for services rendered.
As a cumulative income statement, 600 million for 10 years isn't anything to brag about. Most games we'd readily recognize have pulled that in - some of them per year.
IMHO, claiming 600 million 'raised' is ignorant, and at worst, deceptive.
That doesn't make SC a bad game nor does it mean the game will be anything other than wonderful. However, stupid thread needs to die.
SC fans are the same as Tesla fans with the gaslighting.
"Panel gaps and lack of quality control and cheap materials are a feature, not a flaw" "Cyber trucks frunk is bigger than it looks" "it's performance is gonna be great" "cold whether effects performance of ICE vehicles too" .... one big echo chamber.

I'd believe your assessment, but SC fans told me you were unreliable.

There was a time when I was really excited about this game, around the time the hanger module came out; but the slow buggy progress, gaslighting and constant crowd funding over the years killed it for me.

The original Kickstarter amounts to less than 1/3 of a percent these days.
Subscriptions is mostly for getting the Jump Point Magazine and a few (mostly cosmetic) goodies in game. The biggest income comes from sales. So i find it not confusing, but your mileage may vary.
As a cumulative income most developers would LOVE to get 600+ million $ over 10 years. There are only very few games (e.g. League of Legends, GTA etc.) that have incomes in the hundreds of millions yearly and billions overall. Compared to tenthousands of other games that tried and failed.
Funny that this "stupid thread" was recently mostly pushed up by YOUR posts, of which there are more than mine in the last week.
