Roleplaying, do you do it and do you like it?

RasukeRasuke Member Posts: 362
I'm just curious, I'm a big fan of RP, although I never get to anymore...  I used to use NWN but then the expansion came out and I'm really cheap and all.  I was just wondering who liked roleplaying, and if so what kind?  (I.E. futuristic, fantasy, or blah de blah, ect. ect.)

    These kind of posts kinda baffle me.  This website is called www.MMORPG.com.  MMORPG is an acronym for Massive Multiplayer Online (heres the key part, watch for it) ROLEPLAYING Game.

    Why be a member of a MMORPG site if you don't like to roleplay?  Keep in mind there are as many different ways to roleplay as there are grains of sand in the universe so maybe you have a different idea of what roleplaying is then some others do.

    Sadly more and more of the RPG is being taken out of MMORPGs so maybe it would be a good idea to start a MMOG site that all those people can get together and not be hindered by RPG elements or games that tailor to them.  It seems like two completely different cultures are trying to be forced into the same box under the current classification.

    Don't get me wrong, both groups are made up of great people but they want different things from their games.  The roleplayers are unhappy because the non roleplayers are dumbing down their games or whining about roleplay elements and the absence of instant gratification in the current MMORPGs and the non roleplayers are unhappy when any element of roleplay gets into the roleplaying games they buy.

    They should just divide things up a bit.  Roleplayers are from MMORPGville and Non-roleplayers are from MMOGville.  Then when a new game is announced the developer would just list it as a MMOG or a MMORPG and the appropriate sites (MMOG.com or MMORPG.com) would have news and details on them.

    Of course the way it is works best for companies to make money since they can claim their MMOG is a MMORPG and they will fool enough people from both groups to buy it.  Wow this sounds bitter...

    Well sorry to go off on that, it just seems to be such a common argument or question these days and it doesnt make sense to me why the lines are blurred by so many developers and fans alike.

    Now, you make valid points.  This is a MMORPG site, and yes RPG does stand for roleplaying game.  But, MMORPG is still mainly just a genre, whether or not you roleplay is a sensible question.  Now, I know what you're talking about, the line being blurred in all that.  But when I made this post, I was willing to bet there's at least a few people that are members of this site that don't roleplay, (of course, there's probrably more that don't post)  There's also the people in between, thinking it's ok, and they do it from time to time, but don't go out of their way for it.

    This topic was asking how much you're into the idea of roleplaying, a lot, or a little, or in some cases, not at all.  I have to admit, it was partially a stupid question on my part, but I just wanted to try and bring a little life into these boards. (note the topic "Is the site dieing?", school sucks... it's taking away posters.  I was just trying to get em back, that's mainly all)

    Role - Playing?  *huh*

    image  I like to roleplay to a point,  I can't stand where there's someone who's SO into RPGing it's sick!

    Example;

    [Murt] Hail Djin, do you wish to slay some beast today?

    [Djin] Aye!  Where to?

    [Murt] Follow me to .... caves.

    {Travler approaches}

    [kT] Eeekkdhbf uimnee quiraaq xxcoolp!

    [Murt - Djin] *looks at each other*  Uh...

    [Djin] I think his cat just jumped on his keyboard...

    [Murt] Hail kT!  Wish to follow us to some mobs?

    [kT] oopelww mehsswe klvfj kkeeeruif ¤8u+¦ü䦦

    .......

    kT is playing his character... he's playing a human who hasn't learned the words of people yet...  THIS type of RPGing is very very very very annoying!

    I roleplay,  but I don't get all crazy about it either.

    THE END...

    I mean,  it's only fair...  if someone isn't as powerful as you...

    I remember in Shadowbane I've done this a "few" times... I would root,  snare, etc... and then my tank friends would pound the ____ out of the person I'm trying to PK...  I would then Ninja steal and flee like hell. :)

    There's a little automatic list in Shadowbane for when people PK you it will auto write it down. ;)

    I also remember being in an eight person group and going out killing things,  here comes another person from another group and he has about 2HP left...  for some odd reason I wrote my mob and told them we are going to PK them,  watch the other mob if they attack...

    I killed this guy with my shoe he was so low in health...  looted NOTHING from this worthless person.  Next thing I know I get this fireball flying up my arse!!!  I yelled ATTACK!!!  It was a 15 person royal rumble in the desert...  it was great!  Lots of dead people,  great loot and then I made a portal for my whole group...  great!!!  Those where in the good ol' BETA days of SB. :) image

    Sorry Rasuke,

    I do think your question is a valid post and didnt mean to come across as attacking you or anything.  I dont know why I get so riled up on this topic sometimes.  I think its just upsetting when so many great roleplaying elements of games get dropped to streamline the remaining hack and slash stuff.

    There are so many kinds of roleplaying that this question can be tough to answer easily.  I personally dont alter my speech at all when playing a rpg.  I do however loved to be immersed with the feeling I am really in that fantasy world.  I guess this translates to me wanting my roleplaying games to be kinda like a simulator.  I like to have to pack food and supplies for a long journey into the wild.  I like actually having to pack warm clothing to go to a cold mountainous environment.  I like riding a horse and making the journey almost as much as killing the monster or exploring the dungeon.

    If the game has a great world and roleplay elements then thats all the roleplaying I need.  I do like to think of a history for my character in that world and kind of think of playing the game along the lines of reading a fantasy novel or watching a fantasy movie.  Adding things like thee and thou to your speach is pretty silly to me but I can respect that some others enjoy that for their roleplaying.

    A big thing about roleplaying in my opinion is playing a role so different then yourself in real life.  If I am playing a paladin then I will kill evil creatures and defend good people, then when playing an evil character I will kill the good races and try to play out my dark desires...image

    I dont live by any solid rules in my roleplaying so with me its perfectly fine to discuss a movie or real life stuff with friends when playing a mmorpg, that doesnt mean that I am not roleplaying my character anymore.  My rogue will still be sneaky and like shiny things, my dark elf necro will still love killing wood and high elves whenever possible and my Ranger will still love nature even though I dont break into long speaches about it.

    I guess much of my roleplaying takes place in my own head hehe.  image
