This game is really awesome for the sandbox lovers

IzureIzure Member Posts: 518

This game has come along way from last time I played it.

Sure it has a small dev/support team, and they still have some dumb bugs, also there was an incident about a unfair gm or something(which happened in most mmo's)

BUT the depth of this game has kept me entertained.

This game is a player interaction game, if you want to get suits of armor you will need to interact, best thing to do is join a guild. I had 10 offers when I posted on the looking for guild forum.

The combat is actually really challenging/balanced and my favorite part. Its somewhat realistic for a game and really good for an mmo.

Some thing I would like to see in this game is some non combat activities( there is some but not as much as some would like)

The population is healthy, I see different people every day and I go out and pvp everyday.

Anyways this game is only for sandbox niche that can handle a hardcore full loot game, you will die a lot, and if you can't take that don't even try it :)

This game is only "really awesome" if you have frighteningly low standards.

I need not go into why here, there are 1000s of threads as to the specifics of why.

Bad game, bad company. Not worth the bandwidth to download, imo.

The only positive thing you can say about this game, is that if you like the kind of game that it is, and have a high tolerance for bad code, and NEVER, ever plan on getting any help from CS, ever, it is perhaps better than nothing.

But when compared to any other game that actually exists, it comes out the loser. (This game makes DF look good, and THAT is saying something,)

    I too love the game.

I am not a fan of the community behind it though.  From the constant barrage of hate filled arguments you get if you say anything good about the game anywhere.  Its like some holy crusade they are on to ensure no positive statement about Mortal Online is ever uttered on the internet without some negative counter coming shortly after.

Its kinda funny though when you realize most of those crusaders are all pretty up on what is happening with the game, because many of them are still playing it.

Then theres the ingame whining by the population who claims to be fans of pvp yet get so upset when you kill them they put a committee together to investigate and discuss the situation every time.

I love the game, I just wish I knew why I dislike almost every person who plays it.  I don't usually feel that way about games.  I usually enjoy the community.  Even when everyone is running around killing each other all day I usually enjoy the company.

See i've kind of done it too.

Maybe it is the game's fault.  It makes us this way.

    nevermind, I hate Mortal Online.

A lot of our guild moved over from Darkfall to try MO and so far we are all digging it.  I wish Darkfall had all this sandbox content.  The crafting system is so deep.  Loving the local banking with localized resources.  I still have a lot to learn in this game though.  This game certainly has come a long ways.  I tried this game  when it was released and it was a buggy mess.  I still don't like the graphics or animations but will stick around for awhile because of the sandbox content.

Since you are using plural and make it sound like this is daily stuff, I have some question for you.

-On which  MMOs did this happen?

    -When did it happen?

    -Names of the GMs involved?

    -Sources for your claim?

What doesn't happen in other MMO's,  however, is repeated cGM corruption that is swept under the rug. That's what you get for having volunteers as GMs and minors as lead GMs.

I'm quite surprised that you are playing MO instead of Darkfall. I've seen your posts in DF for years. What made your guild move?

I love the game for what it tries to be. Though its no secret the state that it's in is pretty rough. I've had my fair share of bullshit experiences from losing my horse inside of the ground to getting killed by hackers.

It was whatever. The game was what i needed at the time and filled a huge void of what i was missing.

There really is nothing like stepping outside of the safety of the city for the first time. That level of legit fear that falls over you when you know someone could come along and try to kill you but if you've used the safe zones to their advantage you'll stand a chance on the outside.

This is the type of environment where players can make a name for themselves in the world. You could be known as a asshole PK'er or just an all around good person. crafters make easy money when they interact with other players. Everyone's got their names on their friends list just so they can hit them up should they need them.

I got killed once quite a ways from town. This wizard had watched the whole incident of me getting ganked. Not long after he walks up to my corpse and revives me. Every time a wizard casts a spell i know it costs regents of some kind. So dude could have easily killed me afterwards if he wanted to. But he didn't. Gave me a weapon and some armor and said "Good luck out there" and went on his way.

Had another experience once i had learned the game a bit more.

I was riding around the lower half of a hill when a gang of player bandits see me and yell GOLD!!!!!!! I immediately do a 180 and hightail it back towards town and the safety of the guards. The whole way back I have arrows flying past my head taking damage all while they're yelling GOLD GOLD GOLD. I finally stopped evading for a moment, put on auto run, then typed "THIS IS WHY I DON'T CARRY GOLD" of course I'm lying because I'm on my way to buy a skillbook in the next town.

I can only assume the only reason they stopped is because i dodged about 1000+ arrows and they didn't think i had any gold.

    I enjoyed my experiences

There is no arguing the game has its problems but your coming from the angle as if there are options to games like this.  I can think of only one, ONE modern option.  That's Darkfall.  So if there are only TWO modern MMO's like this at all, and you like this style game then it makes sense to play, or play Darkfall.

If you just want to be a critic of games they your right its not perfect.  But I don't think that's the OP point, comparing it to other more polished games with a completely different rule set, of which there are thousands of game then to compare it to.

There's "not perfect" and then there is MO.

There is so much bad code, so many hacks/cheaters, and so much "questionable" behavior from the company running it (I'll be generous) that anyone calling this pile "really awesome" has at best a dubious grip on reality, or, they have another agenda for hyping this thing. On top of that is non-existent CS, and "GMs" that help out their friends in game (something no other game would ever tolerate).

And the jokers in charge actually charge a sub for all of that, if you don't want to be a gimped out F2P player (not that there are many people doing either, the company has been bleeding cash from the minute this game started).

If there is a worse or worse run MMO actually charging anyone a sub, I'd be surprised.

    How's that for "really awesome"?

I have to agree. The idea, on paper, was something that really made me pay attention to what Star Vault was doing, but months after release it was becoming painfully obvious that they didn't have the means or talent to execute their dream. I really, really wanted Mortal Online to pan out. I'd even be willing to give it a fourth or fifth shot, if they were capable of fixing everything (which would be a tremendous feat), but after this long, and after all of the trouble with their GM and player related affairs, it's hard for me to believe that the game will ever reach the standards they themselves set with their famous pre-release power point.

Again, I really wish this was a game worth buying and playing, because it's exactly the kind of game I'm looking for, conceptually speaking. Buyers should absolutely beware.

I dragged myself back promise after promise.  At this point maybe they have stopped promising things they can't deliver.  I found the game very immersive and loved the freedom.  I just wish some of the "cool" things they mentioned would have made.  GM's abusing their power has been a problem in this game for a long time.  I do not know if it is still happening.  The difference in MO is that it costs other players.  If a GM in WoW gave a player an awesome sword I wouldn't care.  If they can use it it kill me and take my crap / land etc. like in MO, then I care more.

The Dev cycle is just soooo slow (again like Xsyon) because there is not a large enough player base to support faster work which leads to stagnant, lowering player base. . etc.  It is a downward spiral.  At least MO seem to have hit bottom and is maybe working its way slowly back to its feet.  That would be nice.

Burntvet again your comparing this game to other polished themeparks. If there was another game with full loot pvp, sandbox, directional blocking/attacks and first person that was more polished, alot of ppl would dump MO in a heartbeat, but there isnt, so we are stuck with this if every other game is a hand holding polished pos. And its pretty playable, havent heard of gm corruption in a good while.

Which is why I said in my initial post MO is "better than nothing" under a very limited set of circumstances, but when compared to ANYTHING else, it looks and is even worse.

I think old school DAOC is still better.

And for loot/PvP in general in an MMO, EvE is far superior. (I have played EvE off and on for years, when I had the itch.)

Just because MO is the "only" game in a very small MMO niche of its type (if you don't count DF, and I refuse to give that company any money either, so I couldn't really say), does not make it a good game (it isn't) or run well (it isn't).

It makes it "first in a field of one".

    And certainly not "really awesome".

Game has been out for over three years, been mentioned on every gaming site including steam and is F2P to try it out, and yet has only been able to convince 3000 people on the entire planet to sub to it (and that number includes alt accounts).  I'm glad you found a game you like but the evidence suggests that this game is terrible.

Unfair GMs as you put it is something that has plauged this game since beta. Although it is not quite as small a thing as you make out here. Players can apply for the position of a GM. They are not hired from external to the player base. It is literally a volunteer role that is populated by actual players. This means that GMs often have very conflicting interests. Over the years many, many GMs have abused their powers. Some have been fired, some are still active. They have given guilds items, gold, materials, intelligence, teleported players across the world, given them heads up on new rare materials, animals, expansions. They have interfered with many sieges, destroyed peoples houses, keeps, pets, armour, weapons and even wrongly banned people from opposing guilds. The lead GM himself 'Discord' even gave his GM details to a guild who then abused them by destroying several Keeps and basically hijacking the server.

This game is a player interaction game, if you want to get suits of armor you will need to interact, best thing to do is join a guild. I had 10 offers when I posted on the looking for guild forum.

The reason you had 10 offers to join a guild is because that is pretty much every guild in game trying to get one of the very few new players coming in. Due to many bad reviews and mountains of negative content in regards to this game it does not exactly get rushed with new starters. The game world picks up slightly after every content patch which tends to drop once a year if your lucky and then very quickly dies off again once everyone realises none of Star Vaults promises have been delivered. Currently the map feels dead. The population has dropped massively and if you find another player it will likely be a bitter old vet who will deprive you of whatever you own, call you a noob and then troll you on the forums. (Yes the community of Mortal is about as bad as you can get)

The combat is actually really challenging/balanced and my favorite part. Its somewhat realistic for a game and really good for an mmo.

Ok, You likely have not played much and you obviously have not researched the game or even looked at the forums. The combat is extremely unbalanced. Star Vault has a track record for being terrible at balancing things and even worse when it comes to nerfing things. Anything new they put in is normally massively OP. The community complains about it, it takes SV months to fix it and then they nerf it so bad its unplayable. As the game stands right now its probably the least challenging combat wise than it ever has been. Then again, if you have a shoddy internet connection you will likely be able to kill off everyone since its all client based.

Some thing I would like to see in this game is some non combat activities( there is some but not as much as some would like)

The population is healthy, I see different people every day and I go out and pvp everyday.

As I have already mentioned, the population is the lowest it has been for a very long time and even at peak it rarely reaches anything that can be called an MMO. At PEAK interest in MO you would probably see 100-150 people involved in some of the largest battles the game has ever known. The problem is anything over 50 in a zone causes the server to lag, people become invisible, the server crashes, all sorts of problems. Right now, you will be lucky to find more than a few people in each town.

Anyways this game is only for sandbox niche that can handle a hardcore full loot game, you will die a lot, and if you can't take that don't even try it :)

I would change this to 'don't even try it' and leave it at that. Or even better, Research this game before deciding to try it. I do not need to slander this game really as its done a good enough job of it itself and the internet is covered in warnings about trying MO.

Can't speak for the other guild members but for me, I have always been pushing for Darkfall to add depth to their game.  Its so shallow.  Don't get me wrong, it's a great pvp game.  That's it though.  AV went the route of globalized banking with mostly globalized resources.  Events that shout out global messages to alert everyone of the pvp opportunities.  With the instant travel prevalent in the game, yes you can get into action quicker but it has the side effect of not running into someone out in the world running from point A to point B.  There is no one transporting goods, localized conflicts, etc which is all the good shit you get with local banking.  So far for me it's been awesome to play MO because of the above.

I've still been keeping tabs though of what is going on in Darkfall and we still have a handful of guild members still playing.

Listen guys, to me a mmo, is not about the bugs/or the volunteer gm's they do what they have to do but the world it creates, the needed interaction of players like EVE.

That being said its really buggy, I played it  like an addict for like 2 months, might of got burnt out but recently stopped playing it for a few reasons.

Whenever you have so many game breaking bugs in a Full loot MMO, its a big no no.

They lack  content and the game is designed with unneeded time sinks(too grindy and not enough fun content)

Anyways I will continue to sub the game to support it but hardly play it, because atm its the closest to UO that is actually on the market.

I think if they decrease the time sinks they have and then they add some more fun content that would populate the world and have a better newbie experience, so it will populate the game, it will be a great game. BUT its a small dev team so it may be never.

I actually found the combat very fun and skillful and balance. But the predictions is off  because of high pings and client based(bad code infects this game :( )

I am looking forward to gloria victis(probably gunna be worst then MO) Albion Repop for the moment while I play skyrim and csgo ;)

Worth a try if you are used to small indie sandboxes.

Just for the record...  this game launched June 9th, 2010.  Today is December 13th, 2014.

That's 4.5 YEARS after release folks.  People can believe whatever they want, but honestly... expecting much from a 4.5 year old game is probably crazy.  This is why I always object to folks that use the concept of "potential" to hype a game.  Heck EVERY game could POTENTIALLY be great at some point.  It's reality that counts though.

I think the smart move for them would have been to have marketed a MO 2.0 with their new continent.  Start wit the STEAM release on a fresh server in a new land. Get rid of all the exploited characters and items.  They might have had a shot.  Trying to sell people on a 4.5 year old game (likely 5+ when STEAM launch comes...) is just not gonna happen.

SV is a company full of lies. I was an early backer with the collector's edition and even that didn't contain what was promised and what it did have was the lowest of quality. Then the game was unplayable and the company kept feeding us BS and lies and never delivered. Hell, their "in game footage" trailer was even BS. Never giving another penny to these clowns.
