I know 45.00 gets me in the door, but am I better off getting the constellation if I want to eventually be an explorer and minor trade runner?

One important thing to note - all of the ships only come with limited insurance. This means that if your ship gets destroyed, you lose it forever. Also, all of the ships will be available for purchase using in-game currency once the game is released.

The only ships with lifetime insurance are "Concept Sales", which are limited offers of ships that won't be available for quite some time - they are in the very early stages of the development.

Getting ships above the starter package is a nice gesture and a great way to support the game. You will also get to play around with them before the game gets released.

That said, you shouldn't neccessarily feel pressured to get a specific ship in order to match a specific playstyle. The Constellation sounds like an amazing ship to explore with, but there may be benefits to starting with a small ship and later upgrading by playing the game. :)

This is not exactly true. Ships now come with 6 months of Standard Hull Insurance. This means that if your ship gets destroyed it will be replaced by another stock model with the same base equipment your original came with. The only thing you'll lose is whatever upgrades you've installed. You can also purchase another period of insurance in game when your first period runs out for a modest fee of UEC(in game currency).

As for what ship to start with I would just get an Aurora Package to start. If you later decide you want to move up a little you can always exchange it for store credit and put it toward a larger ship.

Yea, I feel bad for ya as I got in when Constellation got lifetime insurance... so I'll be able to buy that puppy again and again for--e-ver but I won't throw another dime at this game until I see something more.  I feel like I'm watching a ponzi scheme...

But as others have pointed out... at this point.. it may be better to save the money and get in with in game currency.

This is just blatantly false. It is only limited in time. That's the only difference between LTI and normal hull insurance, is that LTI doesn't run out. Insurance will be a VERY minor cost. You will also be reminded if you ever try to take off without insurance.

Personally, I'd suggest just getting a lower end(300 series) ship and building your way up to an explorer ship once the PU hits. If you really have to get an explorer ship off the bat, then I'd suggest just getting the 315p.  If you want to go more expensive... wait for the Carrack. It's built with exploration primarily in mind and it will have LTI when the sale goes on. It will be soon though, so keep your eyes open as the sales tend to only last a weekend or week.

I personally recommend to start with a dedicated explorer ship like the Origin 315P Explorer

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/315p

    http://www.starcitizen-wiki.de/index.php/315p

The Jump (Point) Scanner and the Explorer Jump Engine allow you to go hunting for unexplored new systems. And as there is a high chance to DIE during an attempt to navigate a new jump point, the smaller hull puts less of a dent into your in game wallet. Especially with the 4 month insurance prepaid. The Package costs 75 $.

If you just want basic access at minimal real world cost  and an allrounder ship with some exploration capbilities, i recommend the Aurora LX with its special jump engine (45 $ish for the package). Aurora LX fits best what you wanted - explorer plus minor trade runner.

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/ships/rsi-aurora/Aurora-LX

    http://www.starcitizen-wiki.de/index.php/Aurora_Design

    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/game-packages

I would stop there and buy larger ships in game with in game money later. Unless you want to support Star Citizen as a project and have some extra real world money to spare.

Then you might want to consider the Constellation Aquila, a dedicated explorer ship with Jump Engine, Ursa Rover, Expanded Fuel Tank, Long Range Scanner and dedicated lab and research facilities. Price tag for the package with various goodies is 325 $.

There are rumours about other exploration ships coming ..... but not much details yet.

My advice, buy the game, pay what you feel like and work towards your goals when the game comes out.

Unless you have money to burn and want to contribute more to development, I don't see the point of buying the bigger ships. Kind of sucks the fun out of starting small and building your space empire :P

You might want to inform that the six months of insurance is in game time not real life time as well.

I would wait to at least see what to see what the carrack concept will offer as it seem to be a explorer ship. TBH as an explorer enthusiast I feel we don't have a great choice especially if you do not want to pledge 300$+

Also all concept sales come with LTI.

just get a basic Aurora game package, then you have all you need and you´ll just play like you played Privateer, earn the ships in game. So 45$ for the full game, alpha module access and a ship.

Don´t expect wonders in the dogfighting alpha test though.

LTI (Lifetime insurance) is just SHI (Standard hull insurance) but with SHI when it runs out you need to extend insurance with ingame credits. There sure will be a warning when your insurance is running out. It will be very cheap expense like landing cost, hangar fees, fuel.

Besides right now you can´t lose a ship anyway, the insurance system is not implemented and Arena Commander is just simulation (VR)

Or maybe, get the cheapest ship kitted out for Exploration which is the 315p which comes with a Hyperjump Drive.

Basic Aurora can´t leave the system unless you buy a Jump Drive (again, like it was in Privateer with the start ship the "Tarsus")

  • ArchaegeoArchaegeo Member UncommonPosts: 233

So right now all you can do is the arena commander, racing in it, and walk around your hanger?

    Hmm.

I do have the 325 to spend on the Constellation Aq if warranted, but sounds like it wont be for a while and there is a new explorer ship coming?

Just need something to move on to after the abysmal job Trion did with AA publication.

Yes, I echo the others that you should ignore the FUD in the early reply.  Every ship comes with insurance, but like all in-game acquisitions it will have to be renewed occasionally.  And every ship available during crowdfunding can be acquired "for free" just by playing in the game universe later.  No matter what ship you purchase now, you're helping to crowdfund the game, so it isn't wasted money.  :)

I also plan to be an Explorer, and I noticed one thing the others haven't mentioned.  You should be aware that jump points come in different "sizes".  Some points will be too small for some ships to fit into.  Chris Roberts has mentioned that the Freelancer will be the largest ship to fit into the smallest jump points, so the Constellation will not fit into those jump points.

Will exploration just be a thing in the single player version of the game (Squadron 42 right?) or in the MMO version too?

Correct.  Different development teams are working on different areas of gameplay.  As they finish material well enough to be tested, then crowdfunders gain access to their work.  So far, we have Arena Commander (dogfighting), Racing, and soon the First Person Shooter (FPS, person-to-person combat).  These releases are a good way for them to test out their code on a lot of different pc systems before final release a year or two from now.

Correct.  Squadron 42 is the single-player introduction to the game before joining the multiplayer universe.  Squadron 42 will be very scripted and geared towards "earning your UEE citizenship", so I doubt that we will have the need to explore during that phase.  We can always be surprised later, if CIG decides differently though.  After S42 is released, it will be a while before the persistent universe finally comes online.

Sidenote: All users will have the option of hosting their own multiplayer universe, though, even if you're the only one playing it.  So you could theoretically set up your own private universe, explore to your heart's content, and be solely responsible for discovering every game asset.  :)

Not sure how it will go but think it will be a mmo thing too.  TBH right now I am not interested in SC even though I have bought a couple ships, btw I am waiting to see how the anvil carrack turns out, as there is nothing for explorers to do........ for my exploration needs I am playing ED atm.

I expect SQ42 to be very story driven and having less emphasis on the exploration side (except for things you are MEANT to find because the story demands it).

I guess exploration will be much more important in the extended universe, especially when the number of systems generated with the help of procedural generation goes up and up ..... and more players are finding jump points to these systems.

I'd go for the 315p as a basic explorer ship. You can fly and shoot with it right away, and that counts for something.

If you want to support the game, and have money to burn, a Constellation is a great ship.

    (A Freelancer is a in-between option).

And forget about LTI (life time insurance) - it is just an auto-renewable SHI (Standard Hull Insurance).

    Save your money for now.

So far all they have produced is ship skins.

There is no game atm, let alone anything that you could describe as a MMORPG.

Just lots of pie in the sky.

--> a blatant lie. Nuff said.

There is no game atm, let alone anything that you could describe as a MMORPG.

--> SC has never classified itself as an MMORPG .. you can read it in the FAQ. The game is in non-feature complete pre-alpha phase ... so there is no (complete) game at the moment and no one has claimed that. However, there is an ever increasing number of modules that will ultimately form the final game e.g. Arena Commander and Racing Module. Soon to come: FPS module

Personally went with the 315p variant package. Entry in to game as well as a slightly more capable ship than the arora class. Costs a bit more.  75vs45. You could always go with jump capable arora class and buy your way up. Don't go higher than freelancer, if exploration is your main focus , you will be wasting your money as it stands now.

Also remember everything is subject to change.  A game in early development is seldom the exact same game at release, and even then needs to be changed after release.

Furthermore - there is finally more info on the Carrak :

"Finally, we’re ending the process with a much-awaited concept sale! On November 28th, we will launch the Anvil Carrack explorer concept sale. The Carrack will be available for $345, with LTI and the standard concept sale bonus features (in-game ship model and poster.)"
