We sit down with Development Director Eric Demilt of Obsidian Entertainment to talk and play their new MMORPG Skyforge, currently in technical closed beta and launching in 2015. The game is in technical beta, and its framerate and crashing are due to this. As Eric says, it's nowhere near optimized yet, but they wanted to show people what they were working on. Enjoy!

So is the point of the game to just grind a char forever as there are no levels.
Whats the point to the game, story, pvp like ESO or something else?
There is still character progression, even without levels. Also, I'm pretty sure the point of a game is to be entertained. lol
Another project with MASSIVE potential that is completely destroyed by piss poor design.
Seriously, this looks no different than GW2 as a themepark product. Two Mouse button skills + 6 additionals + Ultimate == SO REPETITIVE AND BORING. Absolutely zero depth to combat.
Not to mention themepark designed equipment. That means zero crafting, and the game will be dictated by drop/quest gear like GW2 (GW2 is primarily quested gear that reaches a "peak" and disallows someone to be better than you, by force).
They show the "world map" as a spherical planet, but it is actually just one giant flat terrain split up with zones/instances. So the map is actually a complete lie. Spherical planets that are playable are easily doable (I did it in a couple weeks of research with Unity, it is easily doable).
You have no idea how difficult something like is on the network side of things since you are constantly reinventing the wheel (as no one wants to step up and create a good networking solution for MMOs). So this is HIGHLY HIGHLY FRUSTRATING to see yet another cookie-cutter MMO with a decent infrastructure behind it.
Very disappointing indeed.
After asking the devs on livestream, it's 8 slot skill (6 numbers, 2 mouse), with the ability to change skills out and even modify how they work Diablo 3 style. That's a system that goes back to Guild Wars 1, and it has way more depth than your shitty skill-bars-on-top-of-skill-bars system that plagues most MMOs. Why? Because it involves actual choice. Depth in a game's skill system has much more to do with CHOICE and SPECIALIZATION than it does with numbers.
There is a crafting system, though it hasn't been discussed in depth (that I know of). Similarly, there are gear tiers. It's just that it works on the same type of gear as TSW - weapons and accessories, with stat-free armor. This is a better system for allowing players to dictate their own appearance while still gearing their character. I'm sorry that you don't like it, but that's a matter of taste.
You may be disappointed, but I'm rather optimistic about the product. If anything destroys this game, it will be its business model or lack of communication between western players and the Russian devs.
Actually, there is crafting planned. Combat may appear to be repetitive now but this is an early technical beta with an early build. There's plenty of time for the developers to use the feedback received from this weekend's beta event and use it to make the combat system better.
And the game does not boast a seamless world environment. It boasts an open-world environment, which it clearly does.
Please do not talk about something you clearly have not taken the time to look into or clearly have some odd grudge against.
Becuase they get permission to do it, and typically have a dev staff with them to talk about the game.
If the skill system is more like GW1 than GW2, it can certainly turn out nice. As some others said, less skills at once means more choices to make on what you actually take with you, instead of theoretically being prepared for every possible scenario, but carrying hundreds of skills that you only use one or twice a month.
Too bad the video is private..i guess it wasn't at first though, as otherwise people would have commented on that earlier..
I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high
And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll
Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde
And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore
They had a dev with them taking them through the game and explaining stuff if you actually watched this live (or shortly after it happened when the video was still up). They also were given beta codes that they gave out during the stream. They also did a similar thing with a French website. Chill the fuck out dude. Press always gets special permission to do shows and articles like this. The NDA is only for you poor regular players lol.
