I was there for Anarchy Online. But the game was so unique that we all stuck it out and it did comeback like a champ. Man the good old days. Still love it as it was my first mmo.
I'm not going to say Anarchy Online didn't have a bad launch, it was at least 6 months after launch until I was willing to try it. The reason, during beta I had been stuck in my room the entire time. Yep, my character couldn't leave his apartment. Making a new character didn't help either, they were stuck in what may have been the same featureless room. I know they eventually fixed it, but not before I got tired of trying. :P
Ah the memories. I remember that bug. You should have stuck around for when you finally got out of your apt. Mission rooms would not load or half load and you would be stuck in walls. I remember being stuck in a shop with 20 other players laughing our butts off and dancing. I think we were more patient with it all because it was this new genre and we were part of it. Back then it was only computer geeks that played mmo's Nothing like what you have now.

My first MMO too, still go back every now and again for nostalgia's sake
David, either you did not play Wow at launch or you read some bad articles. The game had a few minor bugs, but it was quite playable at launch Beyond some minor sever issues it was working fine after the first week. Now EQII on the other hand was a disaster at launch. Took them a year to get the engine working properly. How about ArchAge, talk about a disaster at launch. Not going to fill the page with a long list of games that had a far worse launch than Wow, there are a lot.
Badly thought out article. You should ask some of the other staff before you write something like this. Not your usual work.
I remember WoW being bad, but not that bad. It's probably that I've successfully forgotten the frustration over 10 years. What I remember is not being able to play until I restarted on another server, which I did in the first week. After that there were bugs, crashes, and downtime but I could usually put playtime in. Does it belong in the top 5? Maybe... I'm not sure it's #2.
I played both ESO and AA at launch. AA was MUCH worse. I could at least play ESO without a long wait (when it wasn't down for fixes). I was never hit with bugs like a deleted bank, (though I could see how that would make someone want to put it on their top 5 list). Worst part for me instancing issues while playing with a friend... and all the damn bots. On the other hand, AA had the longest queue times I have ever seen, made worse by people staying in game because they didn't want to log out and get stuck in the queue again (and get rewarded with labor points for doing so)... and all the damn bots.

the usual editorial coming from MMORPG.COM really.
WoW bashing is a sports here.
They give scoring points for this.
Why do you think this kind of article gets published the day WoD launches ?
Not that it matters because people became fed up with these kind of articles.
Instead of talking about the future death of the most succesful MMORPG ever created, this site should think about the dying aspect of this very site. Compared to the10 million subs of WoW the policy in here caused a downfall of 90% activity in posters and visitors on mmorpg.com... and no including non mmorpg games like LOL or my grandmothers personal on line App is not helping much.
Lessons learned: if you constantly take on the number one selling MMO, you chain shaw the wrong branche of the tree (and even sitting in the wrong side of it). That hurts.

Defensive much?
The WoW launch was horrible, nearly as bad as Anarchy Online and that was considered the worst launch of any MMO (should still be, but most people don't remember it)
WoW didn't just have queues, they had 3 HOUR LONG queues) and even with queues that long they had server crashes for much of the time as well, so wait 3 hours play 1 hour and then boom server down... and these weren't queues and server crashes for a couple of days like today's launches, they went on for the first MONTH...
In addition when you were in, the database was so poorly written it couldn't update fast enough. So when you actually got to kill something you would be stuck in kneel down loot pose for 20 minutes only to have the loot and corpse vanish. The mail was just as bugged by the database and this was how Blizzard got you all those quest messages and quest completion loot back then (You remember, Hi, I'm fizzlepop you helped me with the widget of doom, here's a little extra for your help...)
It was abysmal. If anyone says otherwise they weren't there, they forgot, or they are defending something out of emotion rather than reason.
'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.

No game is more fun than the one you can't play, and no game is more boring than one which you've become familiar.

Wow..... I love all the kids on this site thinking your new MMO was the worst launch ever. Sorry but no, this list is pretty much dead on. Now if Vanguard wasn't on the list I would have been worried, but every game that needed to be there is there.
While MMOs tend to launch with problems in varying degrees the ones listed had them in SPADES. For example Aion was an atrocious launch for me, first was the endless queues, then I lagged like hell and couldn't stay connected. No one at NCsoft could help me and kept telling me it was MY end when I could play any other MMO just fine. So I went back to AoC. Which launched just great for me......
See what I mean? Some launches go very badly for some and fine for others. And THEN you have launches that go badly for everyone. lol...
Comments
actually the list would be the same length, just sayin. :P
I do agree however that there are more games with problems at launch then not.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.

Well 3.2 million new players all tried to get in at the same time along with the rest of the 10 million ...
WoW gained MORE new players in 24 hours than other MMO's in their life time...
No server in the world could handle this unexpected traffic along with some idiotic spam attacks on Blizz servers.
We know it was 10 million worldwide by now. So the game is too popular. Shrug.

How to become a millionaire:
Start with a billion dollars and make an MMO.
Archeage just beated them all, even neverwinter exploits cant top Archeage.
2 months in and the exploits that has been active since launch just went public for all to abuse.
And the exploiters got away with a 24 hour ban and all gained items intact.
Meanwhile friends got perma banned for using a razor naga macro to gain a few hours of labor points to craft / farm.
Trion have lost all credibility with this mmo.
It basicly cant get any worse then this.
They have added new anticheat that even announces when someone is banned across all servers. It's called Fairfight.
