So, stuck between a rock and Archeage yesterday I finally decided to download this and go through the hassle of making a battlenet account (Haven't had one since years ago when I quit WoW), and I gotta say this game is amazing! So much fun and addictive- I've already bought 4 packs since yesterday *shakes head.
I love how they actually make each class feel kind of like the classes from WoW, and how you can really turn around a game with some luck and strategy.
LIke just now I was playing against a shaman as my priest, and things were looking really bad with tons of totems and minions like they always try to set up. But I managed to luck into stealing his "give a minion taunt card" and used it on my explosive sheep.
It was priceless him sitting there looking at the lone sheep with taunt with his 8 minions that would die from it and must have been like, "This is a no win situation." before saying F-it and blowing it up. LOL.
After that he was so low on cards and I healed myself up until he gave up the match.
That was truly glorious!
So glad I have this game now to play. Between this and SMITE, I may be done with MMOs. I have more excitement and fun in either one of them than in any MMO I can remember for a LOOOONG time.
Anyway, hope you're enjoying this game, too.

Wait until you get to play Heroes of the Storm.
Basically it's a MOBA with 15-30minute games full of action with the boring parts of a moba stripped out.
This is actually a pretty good description of Hearthstone. Played it for a week or so, and it was fun, although it kinda felt like MTG-lite. However, had i spent any money on this game i would have regreted it.
I used to like TCGs and when patching Diablo 3 started to become my second job grabbed Hearthstone. I like it. I've not put a dime into it and I can't say I'm very good, but I've had fun playing and it's had some interesting mechanics and game theory. I liked the original Warcraft TCG from way when as well. I'll never play World of Warcraft again, but this is a cool little piece of software to stay relevant. Their upcoming MOBA will probably find some install space on my HD as well.
It's just a nice way to progress for those no longer (or never had) the interest into committing to a full time MMORPG.
So far the top-down MOBAs haven't got me interested too much (although I did like one on my phone, but that's cause it was on my phone). I like the 3rd person in SMITE and how autos are skillshots. I never feel like there's boring parts in SMITE and everything is contested constantly.
As for other opinions about Hearthstone, the only thing that was kind of funny was where this guy had like 7 epic murloc cards and they destroyed me lol.
It does seem like some cards are a bit too powerful imo, but that's the cash hook I guess.
Something Awful this way comes.
It could have been a great game mainly because it has its Blizzard fanbase but more so if a good developer made it.It is still missing team play and this is like idk about the 15th season if include Beta,so ya Blizzard is real slow on proper ideas that make sense.
The design is actually a really bad design but i can see how many would like it because it allows you to play untouched.Personally i find that weak design, like most Blizzard games, you SHOULD be challenged on EVERY card play not after a full turn.Hence why mtg is the best design utilizing a stack, then every play you want to make gets contested,as SHOULD be in a pvp game.
I think of it like any sports game, you dont play hockey by skating down the ice uncontested, you have to EARN your space, however in HS you can simply play anything you want.It only works because so can the other player play anything he wants,it is still a weak design for pvp.
Yes i realize MTG had faults, mainly in greed and some far too op cards but Blizz is no different, they make op cards then nerf them and miss out on the obvious nerfs.Right now Muster+Quartermaster is too strong and can be played uncontested.
No i dont know the perfect answer because we saw how counter spells completely ruined MTG but perhaps a different kind of counter ,at least SOME way to contest your opponents plays.
The ranking system is REAL bad,you can be a total noob and still run into tried and proven pro decks, yes even at rank 25.Also giving Legends players a free pass in the rank ladder was supposed to keep them away from noobs but in fact it gives them a MUCH faster route to legend. The proof is that they give you bonus stars,so ya there intention was to make it easier for higher rank to avoid working through the ranks.IMo EVERY season should start brand new and use the Arena system, you lose you get bunched in with the other players who lost and vice versa,it is a better system than the one now.So i guess they got the Arena matching system right but i feel for another reason which was to allow most losers to get at least 1 win to bait them into spending more on Arena.Simple design really, pit two losers against each other someone gets a win, match winners against each other and lower the total number of big runs to avoid giving out more rewards, their intention imo was to have everyone around 2-4 wins.

I would play it for a few weeks before spending any $ on it.
I enjoyed it for about a week before the novelty wore off. Buying random digital cards with real money was a major turn off for me. Otherwise it is a good time killer if nothing else.
Yeah I'm at the point where if someone plays like 3 legendary cards or some freaking crazy stacked deck of rare/epic deathrattle cards, I just write off the match and call them an asshole in my mind.
I bought those packs the first day but I'm not sure how much more I want to spend. Buying packs seems pretty risky based on the free packs I've gotten, so the only thing I'm still kind of tempted to get is Narxamus.
Naxxramas is fun and is worth the purchase. You get some nice cards out of it.
But as far as buying packs, the best way is just to complete your quest every day and then read up on how to do well in the arena. If you can do that, then you'll build up a nice collection steadily. No need to worry about having all the cards at once. Collecting them is part of the fun.
Hearthstone was fun for awhile.
But then you start to realize that the legendary cards are very strong and have very cool effects but you will never have very many of them unless you spend a LOT of money. And there are a great number of legendary cards now that the second set is released.
It's essentially a light hearted casual game with simple mechanics and an engaging interface. But Blizzard will only dole the game out to you in small increments that you pay for with money or by spending tons ond tons of time.
Also it's laughable to call this a "collectable" card game. You are randomly granted cards as you buy packs. The cards represent actions that you can take in the game. You can't trade them and they reside entirely on Blizzard's server under Blizzard's control.
My advice to new players is to play for a few weeks before investing much money at all.
If you never spend money and start now, you will have a miserable time. Even with very lucky draws your win % should be under 40. It is just the nature of the game, possibly really bad design or possibly on purpose to force people to pay in. I have heard of a very very small handful of players that never bought anything and have done well, but they all started in beta and played absolutely ridiculous hours.
It is solid advice to not buy something before you know whether or not you want it, but in Hearthstone's case the game very much seems to be designed to be utter shit until you pony up the cash. You can still do simple hunter and lock decks to get some wins, but at 40% wins you will be playing about an hour and 15 minutes to complete a daily and nearly 19 hours to reach the daily 100 gold cap.
Wow, writing that down really makes me understand why they had trouble with bots.
It doesn't take me 19 hours to get to that cap. I mainly play priest though and I think that helps because I can steal better cards than I have if I'm lucky, and it's just kind of a cheesy class in general if you ask me.
I'm still having fun and probably winning more than losing. Basically I try to concede as early as possible if I come across someone with a really stacked deck of great cards. That makes it less frustrating.
I ran into a card today that was totally ridiculous. You turn into a minion with a weapon and a power that summons 6/6 minions for 2 mana. WTF is that BS lol.
Besides stuff like that though I'm still having fun. Arena is pretty equalized anyway since it's all random, even though I'm not good at it.
Learning to concede terrible odds games early is definitely a great way to save time and enjoy the game more.
That card was Jaraxxus, EREDAR LORD OF THE BURNING LEGION.
Id say you seem to already have the important parts of this game figured out - don't sweat the RNG, concede bad games early, play arena for good times.
Ended up buying Naxxaramus, mostly for sludge belcher, just because I was getting sick of fighting him without having him. I didn't realize you get a lot of decent cards really from it. I have a whole lot more to work with.
Still having fun with the game and early predictions of me losing interest seem wrong. It might help that I'm playing a few games pretty regularly- Hearlthstone, SMITE and TERA.
I think it more likely because you are taking it slowly. I purchased a bunch of packs about 4 months after starting (I played casually), and it didn't take long for the novelty to wear off.
As someone who has played a lot of TCG's, Hearthstone is about a shallow experience as I have gotten. I was like the OP, and haven a blast initially, but it got boring soo fast and the the fact that I couldn't actually play with my friends and progress was enough to make me put it down unless this changes and to my knowledge, it hasn't. It is free so it can't hurt to give it a try, but as a fan of the genre, it left a bad taste in my mouth.
RIP Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan and Paul Gray.
I wouldn't know what's different about them- they're still copying game types and making quality mass-appeal games out of them- Hearthstone seems to have done to virtual card games what WoW did to Everquest and MMOs.
Still having fun with this- it can be very frustrating at times but I think I finally have synergized enough decks where I have a fighting chance against decent decks. I still want/need a lot of cards but I doubt I'll be putting much more money into it, unless they release another Naxxaramus. The odds are just not good enough to get what I want, unless I wanted to spend a lot of money and I don't.
I agree with op been playing since the beginning and having fun, I would rather play this then eso any day
I got super board and don't really play much at all anymore.
The reason is lack of choice,it comes down to where every play is largely predictable,so it becomes a war of rng over skill.
Really the biggest skill in the game comes from AOE's,knowing when not to play into them and knowing when to save yours for the right moment.
Other than that there is just a lot of variations of straight to the face aggro decks.
I watched one streamer than finally changed up the obvious Warrior decks you see a million times over,so kudos to him. However it still comes down to first up turn 7 DrBoom, protect board with a Loatheb, get up a timely taunt again protect him with Loatheb.
I see every player counting their dmg knowing and waiting for that 1 lucky rng draw that outright wins the game.
RNG factor is VERY high, strategy is VERY low, predictability is very high. All you see is the players who play a massive amount of games keep rising to the top.
I would rather see Blizzard run monthly ladders and tournies that utilize eliminations, remove the whole premise of " i play 500 games a month there for i am legend".
The entire process should use bracket systems, process of eliminations.Instead we have sponsors and money gaming controlling the community, they hand pick not only who can qualify but many who are auto included.it puts a huge damper on factual ratings.
