No MMO in a post SWTOR world will ever announce game subscription numbers if they are under 1 million.

Final Fantasy is not a failure like SWTOR and other games that released in the past years. It really is the only mmo released in the last 10 years that I can is a real success even if it took them 2 tries to achieve it.

SWTOR a failure? you mean a failure on personal level? then nothing to argue about.

Otherwise nope. MMOS are long term venture and SWTOR has already made its profit and still continue to do so. Unless ofcourse you are one of those individuals who believe that a P2P MMO turning into F2P model is immediate failure?

You need to remember that MMOS take a long time to recoup their money and since people these days don't have patience to wait for a year or two..verdict has to be given there and then. Still doesn't mean anything.

It is all about anointing a picture. SE have announced that they expect their revenue, operating profit and total profit etc. to be lower than last year. Not much lower but they want to reassure investors that things are stable. Which is all about painting a picture. And 1M subs sounds good.

Now to get that number they have had to add together 3 games and to refer back to "old" data. Which is somewhat suspicious as they will have current data. It may be that the three games now have "slightly less" than 1M. Not "significantly" less financially but less than 1M. And it could be that FFXIV's numbers have grown - but that the other games have fallen more.

The Chinese launch - sure but they have factored that into their projections - and f2p revenue can be even more fickle than subs.

    Painting pictures.

As Bioware did a few months ago. SWTOR has 1M players a month they announced. The same number they announced 12 months ago. A picture of stability right? If only.

When EA announced their financial results they also wanted to paint a picture: that their new titles were doing "really" well. They were able to say that f2p revenue was higher than it was 12 months earlier but it wasn't that big a jump. So they also told investors that things would have been $62M higher if it wasn't for some games declining - primarily Sim City and SWTOR.

So on the one hand we have Bioware saying SWTOR has the same number of players as it did 12 months ago and on the other hand EA saying that SWTOR made a lot less - maybe $20M less, maybe $40 less - all we know is that a $62M fall was due primarily to SWTOR and Sim City.

Different pictures. And a lesson in why one has to be very careful about the message you take away.

that report covers a period of 3 MONTHS of FFXIV, because even though it was released in march it is actually only covers Aug ( release date ) until december of that year. such bad reporting.

The Polygon article ends with the following:"Correction: Square Enix's annual report was released on March 31, 2014, when the company's fiscal year ended. We apologize for the error."

Do you really expect MMORPG.com would check the accuracy of their source, especially after they ran with the Anet debunked reddit post of "GW2 has 3 million players"?

So I guess this site is now resorting to posting outdated info from hot-topic threads as news articles now?

I saw this exact thread w/ a different title (and different author) about a week ago. Also the information posted (which seems identical) was put into question just as much then, as it is being now.

I m not playing the game but i must admit that must be played by a lot of ppl. Every time i check amazon, gamestop etc sites, FF is on the first places in sales and its not a newly launched game. Imho this means a lot.

If you also check Raptr, its behind only from WoW in hours played by mmo's.

I don't know if the game is that good, but i can assume that many ppl play it and considering its a sub based mmo, this really counts a lot.

All Time Favorites: EQ1, WoW, EvE, GW1
    Playing Now: WoW, ESO, GW2

All I know is that FFXIV is doing well enough to continue to push out major updates every quarter, small QoL updates every month to month and a half, hold fanfests in three separate countries, release an expansion in the first half of next year, and expand their game into China, and soon, Korea.  All other numbers are irrelevant, because the game is doing well.  It doesn't need to compare to WoW or anything else.  As long as it's financially successful for the company and people continue to play it, those are the only metrics that matter.
