well another wow killer bits the dust? is there no other mmorpg that can challenge wow subscriptions?
looks like its 2015 and still nothing challenges 10 million active wow subs kind of sad really.

I don't think it matters what payment model you use that makes a game good or bad. I'm not sure where you are intending to go with this subject at all. /shrug
edit: and it is really sad OP that Blizzard hasn't done this yet.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
Why have a WOW killer just play what you like and im happy ESO is going b2p i already have the game.
I totally agree! I have an active WoW subscription and have had for years. I wish they would take the same road as GW2, TSW, and ESO. WoW would still be the same game, I just wouldn't have to pay $14.99 a month and could choose when I wanted to play rather than feeling obligated to get my money's worth.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
i rememebr skyrim has 17 million players that purchased skyrim where did those players go?
elder scroll is the biggest ip. just where did those 17 million skyrim players go?
in fact the total purchases on the elder scrolls ip alone is 30 million worldwide. skyrim sold more then those older elder scrolls titles alone. where did those millions of players go????
On one hand, yeah the WoW doomsday predictions have come and passed so many times they are more of a joke now.
On the other hand, just because Skyrim does amazingly well, doesn't mean every game afterwards will do well, that's absurd, even more so when ESO & Skyrim are in completely different leagues. That's like comparing however many billions of dollars Minecraft makes to Trove. One is singleplayer, can be modded however you want, with a one time fee, which by the way, released at the perfect time. And the other, an MMO, in which you have to buy the game, and then pay a subscription, and then you need a decent PC (I'm sure millions and millions of Skyrim sales are on consoles), plus it released into a market of over saturated garbage. So, yeah. Not really comparable, and not even a good argument tbh.
Are you trolling? Just because you like Skyrim does not mean you will like ESO. Despite the on the surface likeness they are in no way the same game.
Biggest IP compared to what? You do realize WoW has been out for over a decade, and prior to it's launch there were small little games like Warcraft, Warcraft II, and III.
I'm a huge WoW fan, but this new payment model is an awesome thing for ESO. Not only is it good for ESO, but I believe it is good for the gaming genre. B2P is a better way to go imho.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
B2P is not B2P anymore, its box price + cash shop, which in reality makes it F2P+B2P hybrid, which is worse than just F2P.
(but still better than WoW's sub+box+shop three in one payment model)
Eheheh.. Thats rich, comming from Archeage2014..
Troll elsewhere dude this wasn't because they aren't making money on PC, we already have enough evidence of them doing ok financially. This is because Microsoft refused to waive xbox live fees and now we are all screwed over. ZOS decided not to charge sub +xbox live fees : /
Also, it was 20 million sales, and roughly 17 million of the skyrim sales were from consoles.
What other revenue model could they use then? Besides a subscription of course, which has failed. They need to generate income to keep the updates coming and servers running. Box purchases isn't enough to sustain it. At least with a B2P method, you can keep most people from making multiple accounts too, which would otherwise ruin economies worse than they are, or let in all the countless hackers, cheaters, and gold sellers. It's not 100% proof against these people, but it's also not letting the floodgates open for them.
Nothing will kill WoW, the notion of a WoW killer was always amusing, the game will sustain itself even if it dropped to 1million subs.
The problem with ESO is that after all their grand-standing it just wasn't a very fun experience, plagued with problems right out of the gate. Ask Age of Conan how that turned out? To which, in today's standards Age of Conan is quite a good game, but its initial troubles fucked that game royally, it got fucked so hard and this in turn impacted The Secret World which is ANOTHER great game not given its due and that games launch was perfectly fine.
The difference between these two companies is money mainly, ESO can afford to go B2P as that is a great and viable option to get people pumped back into it, especially for the console kiddies.
But hey, you guys that want to play an MMO on console... Go for Final Fantasy 14, much better, alternatively stick with Skyrim or wait for Dragon's Dogma online.
80% of those purchases are on consoles. So in all likelihood, they are waiting for the console release.
It was never intended to be anything that it isnt now becoming. We all saw it in beta last year and how they handled the Imperial additions and the explorer packs. It just seemed like they were pushing to keep it sub based longer than most of us predicted.
How you feel about the change is really irrlelvant. I know some people feel used and duped, but you were warned over a year ago the game wasnt release worthy. Thats the irony, now that it is release worthy it is now being changed to a buy to play model.
Doesnt really make sense (as I have said repeatedly since they have dropped the PC price to 20 bucks a couple times) but whatever. But it is the best model for the game.
Some people might want to call it paid beta, probably not a bad analogy, but they are giving people perks for subbing and buying the game. Not as good a deal as the guys who just bought the game last month for 20 dollars or less but still something.
We said it way back that at no time (not even now) was it worth 60 bux box price AND a $15/mo sub. It MIGHT be worth 15 bucks now if you get the box on the cheap and your free month, but only for alimited time. Maybe 3 months.
Theyre doing the best they can to insure the longevity of the game. Free to play is actually the worst for longevity. DLC might be the best as long as the DLC content is decent, reasonably priced and not and obvious and blatant cash grab.
But going by Skyrim DLC I suspect 19.99 per type prices, which may or may not offer 'value'.
WOW is not a good game its average!
ill never sub.to wow again, its being kept alive by people with not my kind of taste just like zombie games or mobas.
ZoS, nor anyone on these forums (at least, not that I remember of).
Sorry, WoW has a hugely diverse player base. I don't know why you would stereotype it's players in this fasion. Father's, Mother's, Grandparents, teens, children, and so on play the game. Everyone is a unique individual and just because they are playing the same game doesn't make them all the same people. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised that nearly everyone that has played ESO has played WoW for an extended time. I myself was inline at the mall when WoW released back in 2004 and I'm still a fan of it and ESO. People can play more than one mmorpg at once!
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
Same here. I play WoW with family, ESO being my game of choice
WoW is a very good MMO. However the direction its taking is not to my liking. Blizz seems to be more focused on casuals with each passing expansion that want instant gratification and not what would take long months to a year to accomplish.
I would much prefer a game that rewards people with patience and dedication which is not WoW.
Sure it is average....a little biased are you?
It is funnyu you mention Wow because back in the day without knowing much about Blizzard,i only glanced at their portfolio and found nothing good from them.None the less ,along came EQ2 and short after WOW,i played both and not being a fanbois of SOE nor Blizzard just simply looking for a good game,i EASILY chose EQ2 over WOW.At the time i actually said to myself WOW i can't see anyone playing that game over EQ2 not even close.
I tried a few times to see the fuss, but nope nothing in Wow ,EQ2 is simply better. Now it took several years alter and after hanging out in Twitch and listening to people talk and chatters type,it became apparent that Blizzard followers simply buy ANYTHING and EVERYTHING Blizzard sells no matter how good it is or not.
Now fast forward,i discover this game called Path of Exile i think ok it has the usual faults i don't like in game but it's ok fun and i like the character and gear building idea. The servers go down,so i am bored and think ok how about Diablo,i hear a lot about it.Google a bit and see it set a recorDed for the mOSt sales in the first 24 hrs.I am thinking great i'll give the trial a WHIRL.
I was again like WOW,typical Blizzard fashion low end graphics easier game play. Now i am not saying POE is difficult either but it is a tad tougher than Diablo3 to the point i was actually getting very bored playing D3.Now you can criticize POE for copying Diablo and i was surprised it is an exact copy of the game almost right to the tee,but it took everything Blizzard did and improved on it and i mean everything.
Moral of the story?Blizzard makes millions or Billions selling slightly inferior products al lbecause it simply is a mass marketing giant and has a fanbois following.,Me personally i am not a fanbois of ANY developer,i simply look around for the best possible games to play.I loved Quake but UT99 was better so i moved to that game.I loved FPS's but discovered FFXI,i loved it and played it but quit when they made changes i did not like.I loved UT99 did not like ANY of the renditions afterwards.I "MOVE ON" i do not stick with a game if it is simply not cutting it nor because i spent years and have all these levels and can't let go.
Blizzard is imo popular for all the wrong reasons and makes more money than it should, but whatever it is what it is ,Farmville made millions as well,i will never say that game was any good not by a long stretch.Geesh i remember kids all wanting those scooters because some fashion models and tv stars had them, now nobody cares about them,it is all about popularity and not about reasoning or common sense.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
And yet, we had a few ESO white knights claiming it was exactly that...particularly after ESO's thrilling victory in this site's lame "popularity" contest. lol
