EQ2 had 2 starting cities in vanilla and it did fine because there was more content in and around each than one person could reasonably explore before outleveling it.
First.. I was there on day 1 when EQ2 launched.. It was far from fine, in fact if it wasn't for a revamp on the game since it's original state I doubt it would be open for business today.. The combat was very group dependent and almost to the point that groups had to perform "heroic" moments on queue or lose.. Soloing was virtually impossible after the entry areas.. Then you add in the total screw job in crafting where people were DYING because of crafting damage, and the interdependency of professions turn many away, myself included.. EQ2 today is NO WHERE close to where it was when it first launched and for good reason..

True.. Both cities were huge in size, split up into neighborhoods.. Traveling from one part of Freeport to the other, then back out into the plains was a pain in the royal arse.. I don't want instant travel, but I'd be dammed to just run for the sake of running. I have since returned one time to EQ2 after all the changes and it's much better.. I even bought a place in Halas, and I support instance housing instead of open world free for all housing.. But yeah.. WoW was more inviting in the beginning.. I ended up playing WoW for years, instead of EQ2 because of it..
