Why is the vast majority of people hating on WoW so much. I've been reading these boards for a long time and it never ceases to amaze me how in almost EVERY SINGLE thread people never fail to throw in some insult directed towards WoW - e.g. Wow ruined this, wow ruined that, EQ/UO/DAOC/SWG did everything better but WoW broke everything, WoW is cheap, WoW is a casualised mess etc.
Why does everyone hate WoW so much? What was so bad about WoW? When WoW launched it played very differently to all the MMOs in the market. WoW was not like EQ. WoW was not like UO. WOW was not like SWG. WoW was not like DAoC. WoW was not like Lineage 2. Do I need to carry on? WoW was very unique in its approach to levelling. WoW had an amazing combat system. IT was fluid, engaging, unique. WoW had an amazing atmosphere, it had tons of quests, a lot of them had great stories. I was never bored when levelling in WoW. I levelled 3, YES THREE, heroes to lvl 60 during vanilla and was never bored during the levelling process.
Everyone I spoke to at the time loved WoW. Even my friends who have never tried MMOs or didn't like games like EQ loved WoW and I even know people who dropped all other gaming for that game.
So why do you guys hate so much on WoW? Was it not one of the most fun MMOs when it launched? How many of you loved playing WoW for the first time when it launched? HOw many of you spent countless hours playing WoW? How many of you played more than 1k hours? IF you played WoW for a huge number of hours and enjoyed it, why are you hating on it now? I personally don't understand it. I have spent countless hours playing WoW and I loved my gaming experience when I played WoW for the first time. I would never hate on a game which has given me so many fun times and really good memories. So why are you guys trashing WoW left and right? Did you never enjoy playing WoW?
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

Can't even begin to imagine how many hours i've put into WoW, an old gaming app i used years ago says i got 7.7k hours into it.
It's probably triple that by now lol.
Many people who come to these forum are part of a specific MMO-crowd, the so called ''give me my dream MMO crowd''. Since these people still come here means that they haven't found what they are searching for which also means that they haven't been happy with old MMOs. Now, looking at the MMO industry, many MMOs tend to copy from the ones that got successful therefore, this specific crowd will hate on these ''successful'' MMOs as these titles, in their opinion, halt the evolution in the MMO industry.
This is also the reason why WoW and GW2 have, arguebly, been the most commercially successful and yet hated titles in this forum.
This, if we put aside, the hate that every new MMO gets, lol.

around 2.5 years full time day and night
around 5 years full day time
around 10 years 6h a day.
wait wut ?
WoW is in top 3 of my list of the best games of all times.
..or it was during vanilla and TBC. From Cataclysm on it became the most worthless garbage i can ever imagine in history of videogames, if you take count the production value and monthly fee.
I don't hate WoW for what it is, and i have got over the fact it doesn't cater to my preferences anymore.
But i hate there once was an awesome game, which i can't play anymore - not even as abandon ware.
I think part of the hate comes from the game feeling like its targeted at a younger audience than most MMO's.
You could go to your friend and say, I like ESO/TSW/Lotro, it has a good story etc etc.
You just cant say that about WoW.
However WoW is well polished and provides a great raiding experience (if you can commit the time for it).
The hate comes from knowing its childish but its designed so you want to play it anyway.
Playing: Darkfall New Dawn (and planning to play Fallout 76)
Favourite games have included: UO, Lineage2, Darkfall, Lotro, Baldur's Gate, SSX, FF7 and yes the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe
and you cam up with those numbers right out of your ass?
or do you have any stats to back them up?
people hate it when things go mainstream, those new hippster generation needs something "cool" and "unique", and wow stopped being unique when everyone copied it, that's when the rest of the world (but those copying it) started to hate it.
if you hate WoW you most likely don't like MMOs. it's pretty simple
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
This is how I feel and believe most do. They took the game I love and made it in to something else. All my time invested feels a waste.
Played WoW for 2 months in WoTLK and never came back it simply is boring and casual, The problem is when everyone is trying to make its own wow clone since 2004 with no sign of courage to make a true MMO again, even after so many wowclone failures.
At least I'm happy to see that Lineage 1 didn't surrender and still is the second biggest MMO on the market, being 100% old school.
Would you please explain what changed ?
The game feels fundamentally the same to me.
Do quests, level up, do 5 mans, do heroics, get raid ready, raid.

That's why I dislike Blizzard as well. I still buy the expacs but only play a couple of months.
You have to have a frame of reference from which the preponderance of the gamers can relate to... when you say WoW, people immediately know what you are referring to... for good or bad, it is a frame of reference. You choose something obscure and people are like Hello Kitty what?
Hate it or love it... it's the most well known MMO of all time.
Would you please explain what changed?
For me personal it was when I start playing WoW and started with a 1h sword and then found a nice 1h axe, I needed to learn to fight with it by most of the time going back an area to kill some lower mobs. Or the need to make bullets for my gun and for other players, or arrows ofcourse. Or that I hate how they messed up the old deadmines.
And most people in rl also do not like if there is only 1 winner all the time, but thats an other discussion
You accused someone of fabricating evidence by replying with ignorance. Blizzard's earnings from Wow (albeit perhaps roughly) have been listed many times. YOU go and look it up and compare it against the content they have pushed out over the years. The game very obviously only benefits fractionally from it's earnings.
Also the main complaint I see (and also share) is not just content but also the direction the game has gone. It is entirely the game's direction that has Blizzard losing long time players of it's early game play. Wow is the only game I have ever played where the guild I was in was made entirely from local players in the same city as me. It simply had so many players it was very easy to make an entire raiding build locally. In vanilla I was in our server's largest guild which dissolved before BC was even half it's age because of the drastic game play changes.
Each and every single large guild I was in disbanded shortly after a new expansion hit (slightly less so for BC as it still left the game difficult). Blizzard failed to stick with their own vision and did what most corporate gaming companies did: cater to current trends in the mmo market instead of expanding on their own vision. This breeds player disillusionment. Wow has been around for so long not because it was a great unified game over a decade but because it re-engineered itself each expansion to target a market share. This means it shat out it's old players in favor of new ones outside of the smaller fraction that have managed to stick around at least 2-3 expansions (and likely took large breaks).
These are not MMO haters. They are players who were forced out of the game they once played because it became something different. It is a legitimate complaint. Many of the players I once played along side still play games and many still continued on being life long mmo lovers ... just in different mmos. These are die hard fans but even these players can't handle being shit on and forgotten because some venture capitalist knows nothing about community gaming.
Is Blizzard more independent now? Perhaps but when an online card game that takes a FRACTION of development time to earn more than Wow does you can bet your beloved game becomes the red-headed step child of the company SOON. Good luck with your future Wow expansions as the game goes more and more on life support. You aren't getting a sequel and you aren't getting another massive mmo from this company again as it bleeds the profits from Wow like is has been for years into other genres that prove to be greater short term earners for their statistical charts.
You stay sassy!
I can answer for me.
1: They nerfed the leveling game. It's to fast, to easy now. Zero challenge.
2: They added heirloom gear that ruined battle ground leveling.
3: They made dungeons all about aoe.
4: They dumbed down many aspects of the game. Hunter pets, Rogue poisons, reagents for spells, travel, weapon skill leveling, etc....It's all about convenience. Makes the game feel like a kids game. I could go on but you get my point.
To be fair, I don't think many hate on WoW for how it was at launch. I think most sane folks would agree that there was a time when it was a great game.
I think what most hate on is what it became, and the effect of what it became had on the market.
It, over time, became a blueprint that strangled the genre with many innovations that most see as killing the potentiol of what a MMORPG could be. It also, because it was fashionable to play for a while, gave the MMORPG industry the delusion that these games had broad appeal, and they killed the goose that laid the golden eggs in their pursuit of it.
In short, WoW boosted the nerdy hobby of MMORPGs into the mainstream and served to destroy the games the nerds love.
I do not use the word nerd here as an insult, just to be clear.
Thanks for the reality check Grey. Anyone who says the game feels the same now as it did throughout every single expansion is either stoned out of their minds or is flat out lying that they had ever played previous editions ... especially vanilla or BC.
There was a time when missing even one CC on a trash mob meant a group wipe. It was simply THAT hard and tactical. I am not speaking of the newest expansion due to not having experience in it but ever since BC Wow has been about as challenging as games people play on their smart phones these days.
This mmo direction is industry wide and the core reason why the genre is where it is today. Blizzard's Wow is simply the posterboy and greatest influence on this change ... something not missed by fans of the genre.
You stay sassy!
Well first of, I do have an active World Of Warcraft account, and a lvl 100 Resto Druid that I play now and then.. So I dont yell at a game I have never tried.
I wont say I HATE wow, but its so oversimplified that it almost feels insulting at times.
Also as a restodruid when I do dungeons with the teenagers (as you most likely end up with) the healer usually get the blame if it fails. Usually foul language in CAPS. I can handle that, but it gets tiering and unrewarding after a time.
Why do I still play it? Mostly for the social aspect. My brother and a few work mates play it, and there is no chance they want to join me in Asherons call, Anarchy Online or Ultima Online, games that I play on the side.
Partly I think Wow fans might be a bit sensitive, any kind of negative feedback does not mean the same thing as hate.
Partly, many people who enjoyed the game back then don't like the direction it have taken since vanilla. It is far more casual now then it used to be and most people here are pretty hardcore MMO fans so many prefered the vanilla game. And more than a few are upset about those garrisons since they more remind most of a facebook game than a MMO.
And of course, it is also the same reason many hate Manchester united, the big one is evil.
But I think that if you posted a survey: Do you hate Wow (with Yes, no and I just don't like where the game is going) I don't think that many would vote that they hate it. Some would of course.
Because it s consistently been the best MMO on the market for years. People hate things that are popular, and yes I know I ll get a list of "most people I know that plays MMOs hate it" etc, etc, but it s still the best one out there.

That is debatable and your opinion really. I think a lot of players begrudgingly play this game because they are so afraid to try something new. I would wager to say that a large part of the player base experiences with MMOs has only come from playing this game. There are much better options out there for MMOs that have deeper systems and just as much polish as WoW has, but sadly never reach a fraction of the numbers that WoW gets due to being stuck in the shadow of WoW. I chat with a lot of my WoW friends and most are just totally clueless that other MMOs even exist. I mention to them all the time about trying out new games but they can't stand the idea about starting over in a new MMO. Honestly this in my opinion is what has helped this game retain such decent numbers over the years. WoW is the comfort food of the MMO world for a lot of its player base.
With that said the game really never evolved into anything special over the years at least for the better. The original game had some promise but they were too afraid or just lacked the talent to really make this game special. Instead they have progressively dumb the game down more and more so that they could cast a wider net to attract more players. Like I said though the people who started this game that stuck around through these changes (being their first MMO) didn't know any better or didn't realize that Blizzard was slowly turning this game into shadow of its former self. I've really noticed a ton of hate threads these days more so than ever before and many of them from long time players. I think Blizzard, especially with this new expansion finally was able to piss off a lot of its core audience with all the dumb changes they made in WoD.
I'm betting that they will see a huge drop in subs for the 2nd quarter more so than the typical post expansion drop off.
