The Quandry

I have an issue for which I desire sage advice.

Having been verily spoilt with 30 ping  for the last 3 months while playing WoW with my son, I decided to subscribe back in ESO for a month prior to the B2P, just to enjoy the game in relative peace before the rush.

However, the game runs for me at 280 ping and having got used to 30 ping, its bloody horrible.

I'm tempted to return to the inane comedy and Pavlovian design of WoW and its garrisons(prisons) simply for the response times.

I think I know the answer (subscribe to both for the month and see which I click on more often) but I'm interested in the opinions of others.

Is decent ping and a more realistic response time more important than an engrossing story?

I wish I knew, hence this post.

Release the hounds....

    Thanks for the reply.

Framerate isn't an issue, its all about the ping.

I will play around with queuing hits and see how that goes.

Yes, playing it for the PvE, PvP would be pointless as you say, at least with a single target melee class.

A ranged aoe class could possibly work, but even then its a huge disadvantage.

Where this gets tricky is: if I don't sub to wow I will probably get used to 280 ping again. If I sub to both, the difference will always be apparent.

    *shrugs*

Ping relates to network latency between your computer and the game server.  Either your ISP, your firewall, or your physical distance to the server is what is killing your ping.  WoW hosts servers around the world and across the country (USA)... ESO isn't that fortunate.

Yeah, and ping might not always be super logical, when I played EQ2 I had to play on a US server even if I live in Sweden, there I had 60 or so in ping but on the EU server I got over 500 with rubberbanding and lag like there been no tomorrow.

You could try to change the port ESO uses, sometimes that helps. Turning off the firewall as a test (and use another one if the ping works better) is also worth a try. It might also be a router thing.

    Yes, at least for me.

We are talking about video games here .. how can one enjoy a video game when you cannot control your toon well?

That ping sounds fine to me, though I'm used to playing games with a ping in the 300-600 range. If you really need a better ping to play, you can always try a different port, ISP, or move!

Btw I'm in Southern Australia, hence the 30 ping to Sydney for WoW and 280 ping for ESO

(Assume servers are hosted on the US east coast)

    And I'm not moving :)

Just tried playing a low level nightblade using a bow (too low to weapon swap yet).

Felt a lot better than melee so might persist with that a while.

    Thanks for the replies.
