Everquest - Let's be honest...

bcbullybcbully Member EpicPosts: 11,843

Everquest wasn't/isn't exactly blazing trails or leading the pack.

Since I've been involved with and following Landmark I must of heard a hundred times "The EQ community wont like this",  "The EQ community expects that...", "The EQ community...", The EQ community". How big is that community exactly? 50k? 100k people?

Don't you think the EQ brand would be better served by looking at what the rest of the gaming community wants? I see this recent shake up as something that could possibly unshackling EQ from the past and allow it to move forward in a more progressive way.  There's no question that Dave and his team had to show their cards (EQN) and what was shown to Nova must not have been the nuts.

Only time will tell, but am I the only one that sees this move as a potential positive for the franchise?

Are you saying not enough companies are making stupid themepark WoW clones and easymode korean button mashers yet and we need another one?

He didn't say any of that. He merely said what they currently have is not impressive and I think we all knew that. Personally I think their ideas for EQN are interesting and appealing to a lot of players - many non EQ fans. But they need to actually execute those ideas in an efficient and high quality manner. And if we're going to bring Korean's into this, executing games quickly, efficiently (and often very high quality as well, despite what many Westerners may think of the actual game mechanics), that's something they do quite well.

He's implying that EQNext shouldn't be like EQ and more like current MMO that attract the masses.

At least that's what I'm reading.

The EQ community would be better served by just leaving EQ out of their future endeavors.  They have no intention of making something even remotely like Everquest, so they should just stop throwing the name around to make money while people can still think fondly on what it used to be.

    Where did he say that.

    Right here:

"There's no question that Dave and his team had to show their cards (EQN) and what was shown to Nova must not have been the nuts."

They presented what they have on the game so far - it was not enough - and they all got fired.

Which is why Sony kicked them to the curb last week and they just fired half of the EQNext staff.....because EQN is so appealing...lol image

you make no sense, you first say EQNext is attracting many players and then say it's not good enough

    make up your mind please

Well the game and it's development was going nowhere at a snails pace. Ideas are one thing, execution is another thing entirely. Also firing expensive staff that you can do without is smart business.

Ideas are great and attract fans, but you don't make any money unless you can make it happen. The "making it happen" part is what they're trying to do now. I'm not sure if you know anything about business, but ideas aren't worth much unless you can profitably act upon them.

I'd rather see EQ get shut down for good before moving it forward in a progressive way, comrade.

We all know what those words translate to, at least in regards to the mmo industry.

nope .. but how about instanced pve action games like warframe? There aren't that many of those.

Sony must have thought neither their idea nor development was going anywhere, otherwise they wouldn't have dumped SoE.

Sony must have agreed with EQ1 players who have been saying that for a while now. That EQNext is going nowhere.

I guess it depends what you mean by the EQ community. Do you mean anyone that has played and enjoyed EQ? Well, then you can take most players from almost any mmorpg. I am willing to bet a large portion of the EQ community doesn't play EQ because it isn't the game it used to be.

Sony lost over a billion dollars last year and is downsizing and getting rid of assets in order to save itself - aside from SOE, they also sold off their Vaio computer business, a music streaming service that no one has ever heard of, cut a bunch of stores in Canada, and slimmed down it's Sony Ericcson business (aka a lot of people got laid off and more of that is coming). They don't have the capital to fix SOE and they knew it. Sony's sale of SOE had more to do with Sony's own problems than SOE's, but we all know SOE needs some fixing before it gets where it needs to be.

Having 100k dedicated fans is better than what they did now. Stabbing everyone in the back and hoping to cash in on the Minecraft and Instant gratification crowd.

    EQNext might be cancelled completely.

Chasing the EQ community would be a bad idea.

The EQ community dont want EQ Next or EQ3, they want EQ1 and if even 1 single feature or aspect of a new EQ MMO is not exactly as it was in EQ1 from 16 years then they will rise up with pitchforks and a nerd rage that burns like the sun.

Also, does any company really want a community thats as insulting and hateful as this:

Stop pretending like you speak for us.

We massively supported Vanguard. Players, guilds and communities.

If it wasn't for the EQ players supporting Vanguard for months, even with all the bugs and problems the game had, it would have been shut down after a single day.

That's more than can be said from the F2P players bunny hopping games every 2 weeks.

How long does the average F2P button masher last before they close half the servers? 4 weeks? At best?

Regardless of what is best for income or "the brand" as you put it, what kind of non-sense is it that a "brand" should abandon its own legacy and fans? Take any of your favorite games and imagine in the next iteration they completely scrapped everything about it and went some different direction with it. That would be utterly crappy (and it happens more often than it should as is without people suggesting it because THEY were not a fan of what came before) for you wouldn't it?

    ^This for the most part

I never did see EQ in the "Next".

And YES I WOULD have LOVED to seen EQ1 remake! Why the hell not!! Or even an EQ1/2 mishmash. What I have seen had nothing to do with all that...then the layoffs.

Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen is sadly the last and only hope for EQ fans.  Sadly, because Brad for all his game design genius, can't design a working business and sad because this game is getting no support because of past mistakes.

The initial plan was to make EQNext like EQ.

Somewhere down the line someone at SoE had the bright idea to throw out tab target, throw out trinity, throw out tanking, throw out class dependency, and everything that had anything to do with EQ.

Most EQ2 and especially EQ1 fans turned against the project.

It went south from then on, and here we are, SoE sold off, half their staff fired.

If they don't want to make a game that will please the old fan , then they shouldn't use the same name or use the name of old game to get attention.

    Not a smart move...

You don't need to tell anyone what you support.

You support F2P, soloing, easymode and bunny hopping games every 2 weeks.

We know, you've said it a 1001 times.

Put it in your avatar and leave everyone else who likes something else alone.

Everyone is tired of hearing it.
