Snatching up the EQN team for Trove already?  Check.

Experience working with many at SOE?  Check.

Head of Trion and plenty of EQ experience?  Check.

Despite the major hate of late with ArcheAge, EQ falling into Trion's hands could be the best possible outcome for all parties involved.

I bet it will be Supercell or Zynga.

I have a hard time believing people accustomed to the quick buck of the mobile market will be up for the headache of running an MMO.  I suppose the opportunity to make EQ themed mobile games will be of some value but having to buy the actual MMOs with it would probably not be appealing to them.

I think Trion would be good alternative, but I don't think they could get the financing needed for so aggressive expansion.

They can sell MMO rights to highestr bidder anytime they want but the things is this IP,old school IP,its wet dream for these folks.

Like "hey man wanna do WoW games for mobiles ? who the heck would refuse ? sure its not same caliber IP as WoW but its huge IP  nonetheless.

Why would those companies be interested in running an MMO ? Specially one that is most likely barely turning a profit ?

If Supercell or Zynga bought the IP, the MMO version would be shut down instantly.

I don't know that the EQ brand is that strong outside of MMO circles (10 years of irrelevance is a long time.), though in the sea of mobile games anything to make yours stand out could be valuable.  EQ 1&2 are both real games so much easier to farm out, but you're probably stuck buying EQN as well, and that could be much harder to unload.

Not sure if you just arrived on Planet Earth or if you been away for the last 50 years. That is exactly what investment Firms do. They buy up companies in financial trouble, cut them up and sell the pieces. Be it IP's, Producst, Buildings (after reducing staff) or any other assets.

Selling off the IPs is just a bonus.  CN is likely betting once they get the employees worth keeping working on mobile games rather than MMOs that are bleeding money the bottom line will turn around in a hurry.

Would it not have been cheaper just to set up a new studio and hire them if that were the case? I mean not everyone wants to work on mobile games so the people they just bought the company to get could quit...

SOE lost 60 million last year and Sony is desperate for money, I doubt SOE cost them a fortune.  Quit and go where pray tell?  There are no big budget MMOs under development (outside of Asia) that could absorb a large amount of people who just quit from SOE.  They'll also likely have to compete with ex-wildstar employees as well.

Indeed, between the rapidly failing Wildstar and the carnage at SOE/Daybreak, there's probably enough experienced developers/managers/Customer Support people being dumped into the market to make a whole new studio from scratch !

All they'd need is a new game concept... How about an open-world MMO that uses Storybricks and voxel tech ? image

Most Investment Firms actually do not buy to strips, they buy to grow to make money on the long term. Of course, you never hear about these because it's not sensationalist garbage nor bad news. Columbus Nova have yet to depart themselves of one of their acquisitions might I add and from what ex-employees (Brasse and a PlanetSide 2 producer) have said, they were very generous (aka nice severance package), so these layoff were not about salving scrap of money laying around to put inside of their own pockets.

SoE wasn't doing amazingly good, they cost Sony millions of dollars in writeoffs in 2014.

Quite the opposite, Sony is going to focus less on TVs and Phones and more on Playstation.

Their main focus now is the Playstation brand, no surprise since that is the only division that is doing extremely well.

They also plan to keep their image sensors going, since their cameras are doing ok, and Nikon uses the Sony image sensors in their camera.

I don't play their other games (in spite of preordering and beta testing ArcheAge), but I actually really like RIFT.  The graphics are nice and the flow of activity is good.  I'm also a launch-day EQ1 veteran.  I'd be happy if Trion acquired the rights to the EverQuest universe and came up with a modern sequel.

Agreed! As long as they do it in-house I don't think you'll see the mess that Archeage was.

if Trion buys the EQ IP and hire EQ devs that were laid off and put the Rift model into the EQ games there is still a chance to save the IP. We all know the shitty model from AA is XLGames decision, otherwise it would have had the same Rift model too.

Was posting in another thread and the thought struck me: have Sony sold the IP? Can't find any actual details on the deal. Reasons:

    • IPs difficult to value: would CN pay big bucks for hard to value IPs? would Sony want to risk a George Lucas / Star Wars fiasco?
    • CN could run the games under a license (common practice, WoW in China, EA with FIFA, SW etc.); and in 5 years time (say) new terms could be agreed dependent on how things have turned out;
    • DCUO is a joint venture with WarnerBros and DC, if Sony were to "sell" their "part" they would probably have to involve the other companies. Easier with a licence deal.
So - maybe - the deal was pretty much that CN have taken over SOE's games and their revenue streams.

I find it easy to get my head around this idea.
    • CN could "put a price" on the revenue stream from the existing portfolio of games. They would work to "build" the games; make money if it goes well, chance of losing money should be minimal after the staff cuts.
    • Sony divest themselves of SOE against which they took a $60M write down last year.
    • Key point: a write down is "different" to a loss. They probably "stripped out" costs for the last few years to better reflect how the launched games have performed. (3 years @ $20M say).
    • Taking the write down would prepare for the deal and would probably form the foundation of the deal done with CN; and if CN turn things around they would make money in the future.
What CN paid would probably have allowed for the staff lay offs as well. Even at $50k per person 200 packages would be $10M. Sony could even have sold SOE for the proverbial penny!

Just an idea but it seems to make sense.

Just think if Brad had the money to hire all those EQ devs. Pantheon would  end up being the EQ successor.  Man, why does he have to suck so much managing a companies finances. If you could get all those guys together, they would make a killer game!
