Ok so this game has so much cool interesting ideas and today I was like WTF is going on. So apparently you need to buy food for your character so he doesn't starve to death. So I went to the inn and buy some food and I cant eat it because it isn't the food you can eat to get rid of hunger. Then I'm walking all around looking at all these tables with npc's eating food and waiters and the such. Then I'm wondering what the fuck is happening. You want to make a nice immersive complex game but don't allow something as simple as eating food. So apparently the only way you can get food is from crafting or other players. And you can only buy food from other players with currency that costs real money. Anyways that has to be one of the crappiest systems I have ever encountered. Its like making this cool feature then crapping all over it by making it extremely complex and unnecessary. Makes me wonder what other things are gonna happen if I keep playing which I don't think I will.
Are you onto something or just on something?

If true, even I'm impressed by how messed up that might be.
edit: cooking and farming seem pretty straight forward and I guess if it supports the player economy then not so bad?
There is NO miracle patch.
95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.
Hope is not a stategy.

It isnt even close to as bad as you think it is....
Do quests, get bound currency, craft food.... not hard, even as a free to play player.

Buy recipe for steamed bun from chef npc . 2 wheat and buy 3 dews from chef npc= 1 steamed bun
12 seconds... Thanks google
Oh man this game I'll tell you whew its been roller coaster ride.
So this game I played during the first and second closed beta.
Man It was truly a fun game. (( there was few American Gm's think 4-6 that was working with the game. During the beta's
they would interact with the people. Make movies for the game using Guild battles going on with Exopac and few other
guilds. )) Exopac Started off as a Royal Guard only guild. But later we started to open our doors to other schools.
During this time the game continued to grow in population. Growing more popular everyday. The GM's asked players to
make video's for them and everything. For them to use.At some point around 4th month marker they stopped appearing I
have rare video of the American gm's fighting with each other. And all players jumped them Eventually this all came
crashing to an end.
((Keep in mind this before I had professional capture cards and second pc to encode. MY video's are much smoother now.))
During the beta they PROMISED NO PAY TO WIN would be in this game. This contradicts what was going on in china
where You Pay You definitely WIN.
We was worried. IT loomed on us ever so closer as game was nearing release Some time near April May I think cant
remember. This game had growing problem Bots. Many of the Asian players brought their bots huge amount of bots. so
many bots...... They would kidnap to get the unbound money you needed to trade for goods between players.... These bots
didn't start to show till release the reason second beta Required you to pay in to play. This stopped many of the mass
amounts of bots being noticed but im sure there was plenty of bots anyhow Just barely noticeable at the time. Any how
Game Releases the flood gates open Bots and tons new players rush into game joining fresh servers (( massive mistake to
have the players on different servers.)) any how with blue dragon still healthy in population we had new problem arise The
bots the damn bots made it difficult to get money. they would teleport to all the player work area's to capture non kidnapped
players. they would get the unbound and not the players thus creating massive influx in unbound money. Inflation
Skyrocketed things that costs at max 3-5 ding went to 20-40 ding - 60-100 ding in less than month. these bots existed long
after I quit. After all this happened the American gms got fired around time they released the 1 first or second pay to win set.
(( they got strong armed IMO to release these pay to win sets. Many will say no it was not P2W you could use the lantern.......
I say fuck you spending 20 unbound at a gamble system to get a page for the skill is complete trash.)) Anyhow Expansion
released I played Mnt. Hua beat shuzaline and her guild while they pm spammed me.
and then I quit cold turkey. I was happy I enjoyed the game to the point the inflation and bullshit gamble system
overwhelmed the greatness this game had. I feel bad for american gm's that worked hard with the community. now its all ran
by the Chinese and they nickle and dime everyone. I feel bad for players like Mutou who Spent money so much real life
money on the game that's inching its way to death. They have merged 4 out 5 servers so far. has 2 left..... And in the end
they will die or go stale.... That game makes you pay so much insane money
ON TOP that..... ((9$ a month for the VIP status that you mostly need. you pay 9 bux a month + more.........))
anyhow can always find me at twitch.tv/catratheone I stream on and off bout every other dayish. Soon Ill be playing through FFIX Prolly tomorrow
OP you can make steamed buns you first day of play or buy for pennies. The thing in Wushu, if you don't work, you don't eat! Ming era China Wuxia at it's finest.
It's best designed mmorpg on the market (with people, nod to EVE) hands down imo. Stick with it OP a world of wonder awaits!
I must be missing something then. When I try to get the cooking skill it tells me that I need to first attain level 9 or more in another crafting job. You don't need the cooking skill to cook steamed buns? See what I mean by confusing for some reason I missed something.
Your character cannot die from starvation in AoW, but a starving character will received a debuff .
The abundant number of eateries in the game was partly due to a former design concerning food in this game.
Up until the 2011 alpha in China, players can only dine in a eatery (at the time there was no food crafting). The idea is someone need to order a table by paying in game currency to eat and other players can join in (to share the cost) and socialize.
The previous system was discarded after 2011 and replaced with player crafting food that cam be eaten anywhere.
The idea of socializing while eating was partly restored in AoW when the camp fire skill was added in 2014 (eating around a camp fire give additional bonus).
For a F2P player who does not want to engage in food crafting and buy from other players - the system will give a small quantity of buns as rewards for daily login. As a player character cannot die from starving, hold on those buns and eat them just before you want to engage in combat activities to remove the starving debuff.

Hmm, Maybe I'm wrong. It's possible I don't remember correctly. You might need to farm some wheat. I don't think it will take you a week though
The poster above me, Cname is the unofficial official Wuxia/Wushu historian. Anything you need to know, ask and I sure they will help explain what's going on. They helped me a lot with the whole culture in the past.
As a new player you can only have one of the manufacturing skills (Chef, Tailor, Blacksmith, Herbalist, Poison Maker, Craftsman). You need to level one of these up to level 9 (legendary) in order to train a second manufacturing skill. If you already have one of these skills it won't let you become a chef.
Kidnapping is the main method to earn money in the game - although without VIP membership you will have a hard time earning as much. Materials gained from disassembling crafted items tend to sell as people need them to upgrade gear. You might want to just make a second character as a chef. I'd recommend joining a guild where other players can help you. You can also post questions on the AOW forums. You'll probably get an answer quicker there then here. It's not an intuitive game for sure but it can be a lot of fun once you get into it a bit. Good luck!
Was watching an episode of Stargate yesterday. Carter was trying to make a generator and there was this wiz kid who knew everything about how to make one. Carter thought she knew what needed to be done to fix it, the kid wanted to tell her how to do it. She stopped the kid and tried her idea and it worked. The kid asked, "Why didn't you just let me tell you how to do it?" Carter responded "Where's the fun in that?"
Nail hit on head.
The real fun in these games is figuring them out all on your own... not being told how to do it.
Baking a potato shouldn't be compared with building a nuclear generator. The fact that you compared a simple craft to building a nuclear generator shows that something is really wrong with this game. I understand the need to build a nice fun crafting game but the basics should be indeed basic and the advanced should be advanced. So in order to learn how to bake a simple potato you cant just ask an old woman you have to run half way across the world and buy the recipe from a certified chef. And not every certified chef knows the recipe so you have to find a particular one in a particular city. Its making a huge mistake by complicating a really simple procedure and making the advanced procedures just as difficult.
Do yourself a favour OP and use this as a learning lesson. The lesson here being, AoW is yet another game with great potential that went down the drain. So do what you are thinking and quit while you are ahead.

Now after release, repeating the very same words from back then would be like preaching to the choir on this site.
I especially love it's complex and interesting PvE....errr.
The game is complete nonsense to someone new to the game. It is a love it hate it type of game. I credit them for not wanting to cater to the masses but they went overboard with this game on every level.
Just create steamed buns with the basic cooking everyone can get.
To make money, the best idea as a beginning player is to simply farm silk (buy silk worms and related stuff from NPC) and sell that in stalls. It's always needed. You can also farm yams or other stuff, just check on the market what's in demand (the EU version lags behind the NA one).
Food isn't a really a big barrier to get across.
AoW is a game that needs tremendous exploring as a newbie, agreed. But with all the complaining about easymode games out there on this forum, I'd think it was the perfect game for more people.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
This is what I did too. When I picked up the cooking skill it gave me the Rice recipe but it only gives 10 nutriton. I bought the Steamed Bread recipe since it gave 20 nutrition for each piece. I farmed my own wheat from my farming skill and bought the dews I needed from the cook. I am only level 1 cook and the skill did not cost much.
One of the most overrated games I have ever seen. People try to pass this off as a sandbox. I still can't believe people play. The game is extremely simple, redundant, completely on rails, and almost no character customization.

I agree with this so much. I couldn't get into it as much as I wanted, simply because every system in the game seems convoluted. I don't mind figuring stuff out but AoW took it to another level.
Now, which one of you will adorn me today?
