That's a bunch of bull. You can see the results of what they've used any donations for in the videos at the KS page or on their website. They've been honest and straightforward about the risks of making a donation to such a project. And they certainly aren't getting any of this KS money unless they achieve their goal.
So what if they've been trying for years? Not giving up and showing some resilience in the face of the overwhelming adversity in making "something different" is a good sign, in my mind.
Furthermore, they've shown their faces many times. It wouldn't be hard to trace their location through their LLC. That's not what scammers do.
Can you tell us why you're advocating this game so strongly? Practically 50% of the posts in this thread are yours. If it makes sense to read up and do homework on an investment, if you know as much of this as the rest of us, why are you telling us to deny our senses? Do you know more about this than you're letting on? Are you a "dev" in this project?
I don't imagine you'd need to say one way or another. It just seems so odd, your hyper-proponency and push to have the rest of us disregard history.
Look at my post count. Do I look like a Dev that came here to push a game?
I'm just an old MMO gamer that hasn't played an MMO for years because they aren't what I want. This game looks good to me. I'm a fan. That's all there is to that. Hell, I haven't even posted here much for quite a while because I've pretty much given up on MMOs until I saw these guys actually were following a plan that looked like it had a chance.
Originally posted by Buccaneer I hope the KS succeeds but I will have to pass. The game looks interesting but I'm not big on full loot PvP games.
I can understand that. Full loot isn't for everyone. But I have a different feeling about it.
See, I started with UO. It had full loot, open PvP, and even the MOBs looted your corpse. heh
But that also meant that there was a social aspect to the game. Besides the lousy griefer stuff, I mean. Whe players died in a dungeon or surrounded by MOBs, other players who were decent would resurrect them and then help draw those MOBs away so that player could get to his corpse and get his gear back. This was at the risk for those other players of dying and losing their own loot.
People made friends that way. Guilds would go help people and often ended up with new recruits who were quite loyal to them. That sort of social atmosphere is completely lacking in modern MMOs (most of them, anyways).
That's why I haven't played any for several years. I just got tired of feeling like a scripted robot. I was falling asleep while playing. There was no reason to do anything except that script of mouse movements and button mashing. Hell, I even gave up talking to other players in-game. They hardly ever talked back anyways. There just was no reason to do that. It's become a numbing experience, with the rare exceptions of some great scenery or something, but that gets old in a few minutes too.
That's why I like the old fashioned games. They feel alive. Other players aren't just manikins. And success was a whole lot sweeter because you could lose too.
I want to see more specifics. 1) Release of their design document(s). 2) This includes their milestone (both major and minor) plan. 3) A commitment to having their entire bug database open to the public for viewing. 4) A software escrow in case it you go out of business or sell off to someone else that kickstart 'investors' will have a copy of the source code for their use.
leading up to the KickStarter. Maybe they'll do the same thing now for the game build too.
As for the rest of your wish list, that seems...a little extreme.
Well, this is some of what they would have to do trying to find money to startup. They should have those ready to go. It is also to prove they are more than someone with "a concept". Make them earn it.

Video makes it sound like there is permadeath. Might be a tough sell.
I'm just glad to see something different, even if I'm afraid this will just be another sandbox without enough sand.
Content is king. That means in a sandbox players need enough things to create, to explore and to fight over to keep coming back. Its been a long time since I played a sandbox game where this was the case.
You get 100 Life Counters. Then you're dead for good.
To quote someone on their boards "End game is when you have 1 Life Counter left." Then you start over, but there are ways to bequeath your acquired wealth to the next character. Even before that last death, if you want.
As far as content, they are going to be throwing in new dungeons all the time, as they perceive the need. And also new content in the form of "Innovations" (new skills, abilities, etc.). And sometimes those new Innovations will open up new game play, like ships opening up access to new lands.
The innovations thing sounds pretty rad. Probably was the most interesting thing in the video.
What didn't sound good was GMs deciding where and/or when they would start certain events. I'd think that sort of thing would need to be randomly generated because a feature like that will almost definitely be abused. Calling it now.
I hate to say it Dullahan, but you are starting to resemble the hordes of other people on here, who say they want innovation , and yet always find something else about the games to complain about.
Are you saying that said GM will always show up on tues at 6 pm? I don't even understand your concern here?
Always waiting for the perfect game that never comes.
FFA Nonconsentual Full Loot PvP ...You know you want it!!

Ya fishy
Really? Where's a real complaint? I mean, there's not one donor from the first try who has complained, mainly because they weer aware up front that it was a donation and there were no promises. From what I understand, most of them have donated again in the second effort that brought this KickStarter.
That's nothing more than a hit piece. A personal grudge. I think it's because the guy is a coder/developer wannabe and resents that some guys who are only "designers" (and not good at coding games themselves) dare to try to make a game. Well, NEWS FLASH, this is a free country where anyone with an idea can try to make it a reality!
That hit piece is full of accusations, rumors based on guesses, and nothing of substance. Hell, I was accused of being one of their developers in this thread just like they claim has been done before. And I'm just a fan of the game design that wants to play it. This is nothing but slander based on that guy/gal's personal butthurt vendetta.

This thread is still going strong? Jesus Christ it's been almost an entire year. That thread has lies in the first line, "They hyped their game, took donations," right there, no they didn't take donations back then, that never even happened. They didn't take any money from anyone. "They're using default unity assets" No they aren't, nothing they've ever used has been a default unity asset. All of the "grievances" these people have about their "shady history" don't even exist, it's just a bunch of people bitching for an entire year because I guess they don't have anything better to do.
This is my first post on this site so call me fake if you want, I have the name Skyfire on the ToA forum with at the moment 643 posts since I found out about this around the last kickstarter, none of which are fake or spammy, you can read them all yourself if you really want to, boom http://trialsofascension.com/forum/members/skyfire.2602/. I've been in most of the tests and I can say that everything in the KS video is real and functions as shown, I've watched it build and improve over every iteration and this will only continue. If you don't like the game because it's a sandbox, or because wandering alone while carrying valuables might get you stabbed, then fine. I personally enjoy the contest of a human opponent, if you don't then whatever, doesn't matter. Just judge the game based on it's own merits. This isn't EA out to get every buck out of you that they possibly can, for once it's people genuinely just trying to make a cool game and needing some capital to do it. They've accomplished everything they needed for a working multiplayer game with combat and crafting in under a year, but for it to have actual varied content and make an entire continent with forests, tundra, deserts, dungeons, three fully functioning and completely different races, etc... would be nice to have that done in a reasonable time frame.
Read what they're actually saying. "A forum thread for the biggest settlement has 5,000 posts made by hundreds of people over the course of two entire years, clearly they're faking it." Uh huh. No, it's impossible these people just liked chatting for an average of six posts per day and used that thread to do it in. That thread you linked has 4,201 posts over the past 8~ months? Interesting.

Eh, yeh, but there's a fine line to that, too. I could argue any time any dev participated in conversation, that person is "advertising". I think there's a certain spirit to that rule, and while "hey, come support us" walks that line, I don't think it crosses, for the intent of the rule.
That said, though, some people are wayyy above and beyond normal "idealism backing" for this game in particular. Hey, maybe they woke up on the wrong side of the bed several days in a row. You never know what's going on, good or bad, in some peoples' lives. All things being equal, however, all understanding of the released data of said game being shared between all these participants, there's categorically nothing to be so entrenched and so animate to defend or champion. There's just nothing there. People are insulting each other over a veritable fart in the wind, a premise, a promise, no demo here, no substance. It's out of the ordinary. How can they not see this?
Here we have a "game" which after 13 (?) years has nothing to show. We understand people give money "for donation purposes only with no guarantee", but that disclaimer stops working after awhile and it certainly doesn't last all this time. Now, if you're going to argue they weren't trying to accept money 13 years ago, you still must admit they were taking money 5 years ago, right? What are you arguing? It's like you're legitimizing this madness.
If you like this game, if you care very much for the idea and the people behind it, tell them, yourself, "put something together to show you are doing this. Show us one year of work to show you're serious and capable of committing to a project". You know, they may have the best intentions but be ill in some way which makes them fully incapable of carrying through with something. Maybe they entirely believe "if they just have x dollars" they can get something done. Maybe they're not criminally-minded cons but mad hatters. Who knows? It ain't gonna be with my money!

Would it also be bad if I posted news related to them constantly, if it were me instead? This particular forum is all about their game.
What would you have people post in this forum? Talk about WoW here instead? Their favorite choice of music? Or not post anything?

How about if you post here when they have a playable demo with 1 class, 1 "race", a couple buildings, a couple mobs and an inventory container?
edit: that's to say, posting defending the game. you can post here all you like, but there isn't a "trials of ascension game" to post about.

Hopefully, everyone will do their research prior to donating to these type of projects.

No need to hate on something just because you don't like it. There's thousands of games without full loot out there.
Also in attempt to craft an on-topic pun, kick me when this thing starts live.
No hate, just stating market trends.

What could possibly go wrong!! Here take my money !!......... Or not
I hate to say it Dullahan, but you are starting to resemble the hordes of other people on here, who say they want innovation , and yet always find something else about the games to complain about.
Once upon a time....
I'm so done with that nonsense.
If by a year you mean 24 hours...Although it's easy to get confused since the same poster that started this one starts 99% of threads in this forum to advertise and promote this game...

Skyrire45's talking about that hit piece linked earlier.
And so what if someone posted a bunch of OPs? That someone, I believe, is a Dev. Do you see something wrong with that? This is the forum devoted to their game, after all.
Once upon a time....
Yeah. See my edit above: it's using forum posts to blatantly advertise.
Edit: but here it is again:

Iselin, it's their game's forum. That's not advertising, it's updating news.
Once upon a time....
Well... let's put it this way... I ain't reporting them because I don't like picking on the little guys...
But posting as a forum poster with a name that doesn't make it obvious you're the developer, is too close to advertising disguised as interest by a fan for my liking.

Once upon a time....
What do you mean by "nothing to show"?
Player testers are building a village in that video.
Once upon a time....
How about if you post here when they have a playable demo with 1 class, 1 "race", a couple buildings, a couple mobs and an inventory container?
edit: that's to say, posting defending the game. you can post here all you like, but there isn't a "trials of ascension game" to post about.
