In the past I saw many other games have Kickstarters.  I knew each would burn their playerbase.  I was right.

I backed this one because Crowfall has an allstar team behind it.  They have Shadowbane behind them.  They have UO behind them.  They have Warden.  The one person who invented "Play to Crush".

This is an Allstar team.  If they screw this game up there is no hope and we should all play WoW.

The movie 1941 by Steven Spielberg had an all star team behind it as well...

I like that movie but i prefer the over the top comic book.

Regarding Crowfall, no matter how many big names are attached to a project. It can always fail and the chances are pretty high looking at recent history.

late 90's New York Rangers was all star....

I wish it the best of luck. It seems to be an "MMORPG" only in the contemporary meaning of the term. It's not a world to inhabit with lore and things to discover, but the idea seems cool and I can see it being a successful new sub-genre of the MMO world. MMOBA?

But I will say that it's probably going to be the closest thing to a Game of Throne style game, I think they're capturing that aspect quite well. I don't know if I'm willing to plunk down any money without more (uncut) gameplay footage, I'd really like to have a good idea of the quality of combat before committing.

The important thing to remember about Kickstarters is this.... you are DONATING money to their cause. They may then give you some REWARDS in return. Nothing is guaranteed, they have just given an estimate of what they think might happen. As long as you are ok with giving them some money on the hope that something might happen, you should be fine.

I'm pretty hyped for Crowfall as well.

I'm not dumb enough to throw money at an unfinished game without extensive information and a playable build though. If I did that, I might as well put some make up on, bend over, lube up, then place a "consumer whore" sign over my buttocks.

Of the kickstarter MMOs out there, this one seems the most solid to me but I still cant bring myself to drop cash on a game I have no clue will come out. Rather pay early access to a game like H1Z1 where I know its buggy being in Beta but I know for a fact I will get some play time for my cash. Maybe when they get to a beta, if you can still buy in, I might support then.

...do you realize that people becomes stars only because they are loved by the masses, not for their talents or pleasing the minor audience?

    See the irony?

One thing is certain.  I will never do that unless WoW changes some of their more basic philosophies and systems.  There are great games out there, none of them are perfect because that's impossible.  I play the game that provides the most entertainment for my tastes.  If more people would just accept that no game will be perfect for them AND millions of other people, and accept the perceived drawbacks as unimportant, I think we would hear a lot less 'genre is dying'.

A gamble now and then with a decent potential of payoff isn't a terrible thing.  There's a really good chance that you'll at least have a game to play at some point.  Will you like that game?  That's the largest part of the gamble.  Odds of gaining something (in the form of entertainment) are probably better than gaining something from dropping $30 on the Mega Millions lottery.

HEY!!! Jim Belushi's role as Wild Bill Kelso in that movie was pretty funny.

Backing the game on kickstarter myself. The draw for me besides both the ala Shadowbane history and sieging is that the game will have settings with meaningful risk.
  • psiicpsiic Member RarePosts: 1,642

On a serious note though I am DONE buying promises and hype from now on I only buy games, finished, polished, optimized, with at least 20 hours of gameplay.

I went back and tallied up all the money I have spent over the last 5 years on promise and hype that never turned into finished completed games and it was a real eye opener for me.

Does not matter what devs have done in the past, we are not playing UO or shadowbane anymore because they are old and tired and look like crap, but you want to support a team that boasts they made old tired games that look like crap?

Screw that what have they done for us lately?

I have never backed anything on Kickstarter either, but the team they have, with the vision they have, I'm willing to take the risk this time.

My second one now. First one was Elite:Dangerous.

I just hope that this will be as good as it "seems" to be. Time will tell, as ever.image

I don't back Kickstarters often but skill base progression and Ralph Koster working on the crafting and economy earns my support.
  • ParepinParepin Member UncommonPosts: 257
Warden is the top dog of this game. That's good enough reason to Kick start it. He invented "Play to Crush" before most of you even knew what an MMORPG was. We are not playing these games to bake bread!

Pledges can be upgraded so why not toss 30$ at them?

I told myself I would NEVER back any Kickstarter. Especially after seeing the massive amount of crap being made. Well, here I am. I back this project.

There is no game without the player.
  • stevebombsquadstevebombsquad Member UncommonPosts: 884
My first kickstarter too. I can't wait for this one. The combination of Coleman and Koster did it for me. I backed at the Backer level for the Beta 1 access.

Most MMOs have a 5-7 year production cycle... so if we start with today as day zero, the game should be released on or about February 24, 2023.

    How hyped are you now?

Why would you start with today as day zero when they have multiple videos, blogs and interviews that indicate there is clearly one or more years of development already completed?

Sorry, no backing from me anymore. The games are fairly all the same, and not to sound glum, but I'm tired of hoping for something new. I have learned that I had only one warm fuzzy many years ago when I played WoW for the first time. I have been looking for it again and learned it isn't meant to happen a second.

This game will be like all the others in the list. It will be a successful niche game. I wish it no ill will malice, just know when to accept things. /shrug
