We've all lost a beloved game... and in the MMO industry, they rarely come back unless by less-than-legal means. But if you could pick, what one dead MMO would you see make a comeback? That is today's daily quest.
I'm personally having a hard time narrowing it down to just one, so I'm going to list two that I know I would actually play.
AUTO ASSAULT:
This was one of my babies. I loved it, warts and all. I would kill to see it given a proper second chance, though I know how niche its angle really is. There was just something about my Human Engineer that I loved. It could have used some work, and honestly would probably play better on consoles if it was ever revisited. But I sure would like my Twisted Metal MMO back one day.
WARHAMMER ONLINE:
You don't know what you got... TILL IT'S GOOO-OONE! So true in this one. I want the RVR back, I want my Ironbreaker back. I want to punt people into lava and march against the Chaos scum.
I'm a firm believer that not every game can be Subscription-Based if we want variety. And I also believe that B2P and F2P can be done well (see GW2, TSW, and others). I just wish that EA would have given this one a shot as a F2P title where you paid for cosmetic upgrades. It could be true to the Warhammer table-top model, and probably would have kept the game running for years.
But what about you? What game do you miss that you wish you could still play? Something tells me SWG, CoH and Vanguard will be mentioned a lot.
Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.
Comments
1. Star Wars Galaxies Pre cu (heck even the last version would be nice)
2. Warhammer Online
3. City of Heroes
City of Heroes
Tabula Rasa (A more complete version, at least)
1. SWG pre-cu with space xpac- i was too young to really appreciate what it was, could really appreciate it now TBH
2. Auto Assault- I had a ton of fun with this game. I really enjoy games like twisted metal so this game was very exciting for me.
3. Vanguard- I was the king of FFA pvp with my monk. I hated when they buffed the druids enough so that max level players could be taken down by druids that were level 16. I loved going chunk to chunk searching and hunting for the player, finding his bind point and that was a done deal for him that day.
1) CoH
2) Warhammer
3) subspace
But conditionally, there might be other games we would want back at some point in time.
ex: Vanilla or TBC wow.
UO pre-trammel
DoaC before ToA
SWG pre nge
EQ the early years

Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience because it lacks a few features you prefer."
John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."
FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you playing an MMORPG?"
City of Heroes
Tabula Rasa
Honorable Mention to Auto Assault -- tons of easily accessible (plastic minded) fun.
My online gaming has not been the same without those. At one time my digital avatar was the very first character a new player talked to in TR (Major McAllister). I miss that game...
Killing two products that were operating in the black for purely political reasons is why NC Soft is firmly entrenched on my no-buy list. Not for nothing, it looks like Wildstar is a blazing dumpster fire of a very high order, so bullet dodged LOL.
1) Earth and Beyond
2) Auto Assault
Star Wars Galaxies pre-CU / NGE
Have fun
I don't think Wish should count because it was never released. But going by your rules, I would say add Dragon Empires.

I was in the Wish Alpha and beta (didn't even have to pay for it lol). It was an ok game but nothing really stood out in this game).
1 - City of Heroes
2 - SWG
3 - Earth and Beyond
E&B should'nt be on you lists since it's alive and well.
Swg any version
Coh
Can't believe i forgot it. My top wish-Matrix online
1. City of Heroes
2. Vanguard
Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.

That is easy
City of Heroes/Villains.
1.) City of Heroes / Villains
2.) Tabula Rasa
(Both preferably AFTER they were sold from NCSoft's vault because of a hostile takeover and dismemberment of their company through auction. That could kill three birds with one stone! Waste not want not!)
EQ Pre-Luclin
Vanguard Pre-SOE.
SWG and Vanguard.
Bill - you are right
COH/COV without a doubt ... Best superhero game ever made ... lets spend hours making new Heroes ..
Pre NGE SWG
These would be the ones I would for sure bring back ... Heck in the case of COH ... I would even Sub again if given a chance
I was about to suggest Auto Assault, but i think you're right how reimagining it a bit could solve a few problems and make it an even better game.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein
"Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
- Vanguard
- WAR
- Tabula Rasa
