Angry Joe GW2 HoT interview

askdabossaskdaboss Member UncommonPosts: 631

If you want another HoT interview (beside the official MMORPG interview), check out this interview from AngryJoe.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG5oUKqbIVM

Highlights:

02:50 - Expansion more "feature" focused than "map" focused. Read: expect relatively few regions

06:30 - Focus on truly challenging PvE content, better AI, use your entire skillbar.

09:30 - Guilds more fully fleshed (maybe alliances between guilds or something of the sort)

11:20 - People who don't buy the expansion will be able to play in the new WvW map, some guild features will not be accessible though

12:30 - Season 1: not possible to bring it back in the near future (due to the way it was implemented), season 2: they are considering doing special bundles that people can pick up

13:50 - A new personal story for your character

15:10 - No new weapons (forget about the spears, etc.)

16:30 - Jumping puzzles leaderboards

17:10 - Super Adventure Box will return "at some point" (doesn't say much)

18:30 - Bunch of RvR features

22:50 - Release date? Closed beta right after PAX/London Rezzed, open beta after then depending on quality...

Actually a good interview, I saw one he die a while ago and he did a terrible job but this is a lot better.

Really knowledegable and asked the questions people wanted to hear.

It seems my estimation of some of the expansion features being available to players without the expansion was correct. it seems Stronghold will also be available if you don't own the expansion.

    Disappointing indeed.

Spears are already in the game albeit as an underwater weapon. It would be interesting if they bring those weapons above ground so that people can appreciate legendary skins of spearguns, tridents etc.

Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

    Currently there are:

    Axes / Daggers / Focus / Greatswords / Hammers / Longbows / Swords / Shortbows / Maces / Pistols / Rifles / Staffs / Torches / Warhorns / Shields / Spears / Harpoon Guns / Tridents

What else do you want? There aren't many more new kinds of weapons they can add..

Imho when he says no new weapons he means no new higher lvl than the ones already exist in game. There will be new armor sets and weapons in every category rare / exotic /ascended, but no higher lvl ones.

This comes to the same philosophy as no more character lvl's, focusing in personal character progression rather than items. This finds me 100% supporting this decision, because i don't like to garbage items i have spend much time and gold or real money to craft. This is something i hate in other games, with every new patch they implement and one major reason i m playing GW2 right now.

I wouldn't mind showing off my Kraitkin outside of the water. Shooting around with a speargun sounds hilarious though.

    *edit*

My post sounded like criticizing you but I just mean the idea is funny. A guy shooting with harpoons, it's similar to people using anchors as hammer skins.

It's just amusing when you encounter it.

Polearms, spears, fist weapons, two handed axes, crossbows, etc. Spears come to mind because IIRC there was a Sylvari wielding a spear in the game reveal video.

Personally, I'd love spears, 2H axes and polearms (on the ground I mean).

To be honest, the lazy solution could have been to say: Druid will not use "2H staff" but a new weapon called "spear", tuck some new animations on top of the new weapon type and keep exactly the same skills.

We know (well... rather pretty much assumed) there would be no new grades/levels to weapons/characters, so I'm confident the question was about new weapon types or categories (Joe mention "pikes" and Colin tells about existing weapon types being available to existing classes).

  • SeleniteSelenite Member UncommonPosts: 38

This expansion is basically meant to set in place a lot of new system that they can add to later in the game. With the profession specialization they basically are going to go in the direction of slowly unlocking all weapons to all classes. So that the weapon value would rise mechanically in the game. + obviously you already have bunch of skins in the game so you can slack on that part. But hope not for 2h axe or polearms, etc until they've got more specializations out for the classes.

Also casting hammers and melee staffs are an awesome idea, enjoyed the concept quite a lot on mesmer already. I bet that the shield for mesmer is also fully dps focused weapon.

One thing i have been wondering for quite some time, how big is their development team currently ?

The rate of new content gives me the creepy feeling that its actually quite reduced since release..

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I don't think they've made any of their developers redundant. It doesn't mean they didn't have any contractors working with them during development of GW2, but the core team remains.

In terms of development: bug fixes, new features, new store additions, maintenance and behind the scene performance work, Chinese version, Xpack, living story, usual corporate crap... That would keep a team busy.

If you're interested, you can read the latest review (17/02/15) in Glassdoor, it seems to give a nice insight:

That post is over 2 years old... And there is a bracket of 2 years between that post and anet not cutting staff....  So what happened in those 2 years?  A team of 300 men can put out much more content then what we have seen..  And the china release taking 300 manyears of development time sounds unlikely...

Maybe there where no cuts at Anet because they where allready cut in the past 2 years and a new cut would endanger the upcomming expansion...

Are you for real? Other games have 3+ months between updates and when it finally arrives its not stellar.

WoW had, what, 14-16 months content draught and i doubt they have smaller team than GW2

In that time GW2 had China release, 2-4 weeks content updates, feature patches and all the usual and now upcoming expansion.

NCSoft didnt cut anything, as you can see they are actually transparent about this stuff as well with the financials, one of the few.

    That's disappointing

    It's not really news, though.

There was a dev post on the oficial forums sometime ago that said that, that there wouldn't be new weapons in the expansion, just existing weapons becoming available to classes that couldn't use them before.

The spears in the trailer were done by the art team, and when they were reviewing the trailer they felt it looked cool so they kept them there even if they weren't going to become a playable weapon in the game.

Most people missed it, though, since it was just a regular dev forum post. Someone posted it on reddit too (that's where I saw it), but wasn't too long on the front page.

What can men do against such reckless hate?

The wait for living world season 1 is what disappoints me the most having only recently returned. I get that it is going to take a while but it sounds more like they don't WANT to work on it. I hope this is not something that they hope people will forget about. Tremendously bad idea making it something that can't be revisited. It is very hard to get a sense of continuity in this story now.  And no, reading the wiki is not good enough.

Living Story was designed as something transitional. The idea was to actually change the world constantly. So it shouldn't be playable once its done. Then they changed that a bit with season 2. Now you can replay it.

I know that is what they intended it to be but that doesn't mean that it turned out to be a good idea. I have been re-enjoying the original story from a new perspective with a new character for the last month but I am finding that I have no desire to move on to season 2 or the story in heart of thorns without seeing season 1.  The features look great but skipping such a big part of the story holds no appeal. In the next week or so I wll probably stop playing again and simply wait until they finish something that will replace the gap that is now season 1.

I was pleased to hear that they are planning on putting something into HoT to allow us to catch up with the story so I will check it out when HoT lands but it remains to be seen how that will turn out.

If they add in LW 1 again my guess is that they will temporarily add 1 event every week and removing the last one when one releases because season 1 was mostly massive content that needsa lot of players to work. It just wasn't made so they can do like season 2. Stuff like the great marionette and the battle of Lions arch need a 100 or so players to work.

Otherwise they would need to rebuild the content and focus it on small groups. And some contentlike the great Karka can't really be converted.

But honestly was it more or less: Scarlett shows up and starts killing people and trash stuff, she wakes Modremoth and you kill her...

They have stated they have been working in 2 projects in the background.

One is the HoT expansion, that is much later in the development stage than you believe.

I dont know why people think they started working on expansion, like, yesterday.

2 years ago NCSoft clearly said there WILL be GW2 expansion, in their investor call irc.

Didn't finish watching all of it.

One thing that irks me is Colin's emphasis on "redefining" elements of the MMORPG.   It's ambitious, but doing things differently just for the sake of being different is a corner ANET pushed themselves into.  I think that was detrimental to the overall game.  Are these redefinitions actually better than the previous?  I am not so sure.

Its not really that simple, each class will be getting a new weapon they didnt have access to before. With a whole new skill line that goes with it. Its more then what most MMOs have to go threw when added a new weapon.

    Be specific, please.
