Help me decide, ESO or GW2?

I liked the underwater areas in GW 2 that was very nice. I also loved the art. Just not so much the dungeons in GW 2 and while it might be true that you would need more elaborate tactics but random groups were always using some exploit or another to run when I played so I left in the end unhappy about that. Gw 2 is a lovely game though.

I am enjoying ESO really a lot and I was one of its big critics when it released but now I have to admit I am very invested in the game. Hoping to make it my home for quite some time. Latest update has improved animations. OP I think you should check out both games. They have different merits.

    Audio: Tie.

Both games are absolute leaders in audio aspect. Consequently, the soundtrack for both is made by the same person.

Gameplay: ESO.  It's the first MMO with "action" combat that got it right.  GW2 is same old same old, and there's no "healer" so in dungeons and raids it's just like a zerg rush lol.

Whatever you are smoking, I want some too. Newsflash, having crosshair does not make a game action-ish automatically. Just saying.

Community: ESO.  By far the best community in MMOs.  Chat is usually free of the normal trolls and everyone is willing to help, and even craft things for free for beginners.

You know, Gw2 has one of the best communities around. I find the lack of trolls amusing.

Service: ESO.  ZOS holds ESO Live on Twitch on Fridays, and I've only had to contact a GM twice, and both times I was contacted ingame within an hour.

I only had to contact Gw2 support once, because i had forgotten my Gw1 account LOL. Couldn't link them.

Also Gw2 has official streams three times a week. One is more of a talk-show, the other two are a weekly PvP tournament. Which becomes monthly at the end of the month, which becomes intercontinental invitational once a year (happens this weekend)

How is underwater combat in TESO?

    Oh snap...

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but GW2 is 75% off this weekend (it's $10 until the 8th) sooo.... why not both?.. :)

What can men do against such reckless hate?

I really could care less if an MMO has underwater combat or not.  I usually avoid it in games that do have it.  To each their own.

It's a hard choice because GW2 doesn't really feel like a true MMO and ESO doesn't feel like a true Elder Scrolls game. So either way you will be disappointed.

Kinda screwed either way honestly unless you just want a sidegame to play, in which case, GW2 all the way. It makes a great sidegame but a lousy MMO.

The question wasn't 'how can I turn this into a my personal moan about both games, buy both op and be assured you have the best 2 mmoRPG in the market.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

Yah, ESO for story and slower pace when you want to chill out a bit and GW2 for fast pace action, exploration and PvP.

  • MargraveMargrave Member RarePosts: 1,370

    Client costs:

    GW2 - March 6th to March 8th is only $10. ( after that it's $39.99 )

    ESO - Currently $59.99

If that effects it any . . .

I'd say these are the best two posts on the subject.

All I'd add to the thread is that in ESO if you want open world, with progression, danger from PVP, with the option to take the occasional break from it for some fine story questing, play in Cyrodil most of the time supplement it with the other side of the game. You also have no problems sticking together with friends this way.

I'll ask how exactly that GW2 doesn't fell like a "true MMO"?   It has crafting, a player economy/AH, guilds -fleshed out with missions, ranks, perks, vaults, etc.-, group questing [Dynamic Events], dungeons, world bosses, leveling, world PvP [WvW], small scaled PvP [sPvP], world exploration, and world evolution (compare Lion's Arche today to this time last year).

In fact, I'd dare say it is more MMO than other games.  Thanks to the down scaling and world boss events that are relevant to even high level characters, they traverse the entire game and make zones feel populated and interesting instead of baron wastelands devoid of life (such as so many other games have done, best example being WoW).   The way questing works and how mob tagging isn't a thing makes PvE less competitive against your fellow gamer and more working with them.    There is no focus on small, 10/20/30 man raids or end-game junk that singles out groups from the rest of the community  (save for the previously mentioned Guild Missions, but those are more fun guild bonding activities).

@OP, there are so many things to do in Guild Wars 2 that you won't even experience the entirety of the game within 6months at least, and by that time Heart of Thorns will be out too.   However for $10 it is a total 100% win for you to go with that.  And if it's not to your taste, so what?  Then you're out the equivalent of a burger, fries, and a large shake.  See that lose as a save from obesity for you.  Right?  So either the game is enjoyable (win) or you're out a measly $10 and won't get fatter from bad food (win).  Win/win for you.

It's $10 right now. For that price, it's a buy for GW2. Even if you only play it for a week or two, you don't lose. I mean $10 is like a half decent take out meal...

But i have to say, getting GW2 over ESO does seem like the best option image

I agree with all you said and especially when it comes to define what is a mmo imho GW2 rules.

Btw 75% sale is not good only to buy a new copy, but upgrade your old one. With 500 gems (down from 2000) you upgrade to Deluxe and especially of you got an older than Digital Heroic account, you will take both items from Deluxe & Heroic. Superb deal :)

i think the 75% deal was for a limited number of sales though, i've been trying to buy on since yesterday and its continually failing, checked with bank to see if it was an issue at my end, but they report it isn't, leads me to believe that Arenanet capped  the sales image

I did that yesterday, but I am not sure I really needed to. Yeah, I got an elite skill and a GW1 styled ranger armor that was worth 500 gems in iteself, and a few small things as well so if you want the armor (you pick between 3) it is a great deal but otherwise it is just so-so.

Note: I did pre-order the game and got some stuff way back for that, if you didn't you might find the deal better.

Really?  I got one 11 hours ago so if you tried before that it surely ain't the case.

And I see zero reason for them to cap this. Can you try from a different computer or ask a friend to buy it for you as a gift and pay him in cash for it?

i tried again about 20 mins ago, and its definitely not my PC, i even tried using chrome (fresh install!) and it was a no go, maybe its because i am in the UK? its not an issue with my credit card either, and they (Visa) report that there has been no attempt by Arenanet etc. to carry out a transaction, so the problem if there is one, is with Arenanet, either that or there just aren't any more copies of the game available for the UK, does seem kind of weird though, huge promo and allimage

If the choice must really be between ESO and GW2, I'd go with GW2 because it's a more polished and complete game, but I'd avoid both of these games if I were you.

My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.

It could have been a temporary issue then. I've just bought a discounted key for a friend through the official website with no problems.

They have never capped the sales except for the launch event when they had to stop selling digital keys back in the day due to high loads on servers and support staff. If you're still having issues getting a key you might want to have a try with a different web browser and see if that helps.

The gem upgrade is through in-game O.O It might be UK issue. Gw2 targets me as european and calculates my prices in euro. Do you have any friend overboard that you trust enough to get it for you and you pay him later. Through PayPal moneysend or something.

In other cases i would advice using VPN or proxy, but I am too paranoid to purchase stuff through proxy :/

You can have your overboard friend to become web proxy for you though, with this software http://www.youngzsoft.net/ccproxy/

Or you could try contacting sales support. But they probably flooded currently so idk how fast they are going to respond. Even at HumbleBundle I had to wait 3 days for answer when their Star Wars bundle was up and they explained that because of the bundle launch their customer support is flooded.

Don't miss out on this promotion, you'll regret it. The next one will probably be bundle with the expack and it will be a lot more expensive.

No offense, but to say GW2 is more an MMO than games like WoW, EQ2, Aion, or even Age of Conan... among others...  Is hogwash.

  • SaunZSaunZ Member UncommonPosts: 472

ESO is only better than GW2 because it has WAY better devs, pvp, pve, combat, music, graphics, lore, story, weapon feel, spell feel, professions, crafting, players out in the real world, players helping each other, crime, loot, horses, gathering, add-ons, community, guilds, exploration and me.

other than that they are pretty close

Go for GW2. It's a solid game with a honest team behind it.

ESO's next update will be about 6-7 months from now and Zenimax treated pc gamers like trash.

Expect them to prioritize consoles and shop-items over anything else.
