ESO is only better than GW2 because it has WAY better devs, pvp, pve, combat, music, graphics, lore, story, weapon feel, spell feel, professions, crafting, players out in the real world, players helping each other, crime, loot, horses, gathering, add-ons, community, guilds, exploration and me.
other than that they are pretty close
Sz )
I like both and I play both... although I have to admit, since I installed ESO last April, I've played GW2 less then 10 hours... shrug.
The part of MMORPGs I always enjoy the most is building characters and tweaking builds. In that respect, GW2 and ESO are both excellent.

Only play ESO if you're willing to play a Dragonknight because that's the only class that the Devs actually play. Also the ESO forum moderators are a bit out of control. One moderator went medieval one me over "....I don't believe the Devs understand the needs of their paying customers". Such a mean spirited comment was a violation of forum rules.
For new players who are interested in ESO, I would personally wait to see how the dust settles once they release the next game changing patch and they change their subscription plans.
So if you intend to play it, find a guild or bunch of friends. It pays out every penny
I love GW2 but finding a decent guild in the game is downright painful. Most guilds I join see like nothing more than glorified chat rooms, without any real sense of community or camaraderie. I've joined and left at least 30 guilds in the last 3 months trying to find something that actually felt like I belong. Have yet to find a home.
All of that aside, I love the game. The living story (especially season 2) is awesome, and something you simply are not going to get in ESO. The pvp is balanced fun and enjoyable, and the SPvP portion of the pvp is getting closer and closer to being a true e-sport over time.
One thing I will say about ESO is that the storylines are great, while you're still leveling the game is awesome. It's not until you reach max level that you really start to see the holes in the swiss cheese.
1. there is only one real competitive campaign and that's the veteran campaign.
2. it's damn hard to find groups atm for anything. In AD all we do is sit and spam in /zone for hours on end until you get your pledges done and then log off
3. End game is a massive grind. This will change to champion points once VR go bye bye, but a grind is still a grind.
4. The classes are extremely poorly balanced. Try playing a sorc, and be competitive in pvp up against Dragon Knights, and now templars (the god class).
All in all, I would say GW2 is the better game. But with the living story at a lull atm, ESO is the better time sink until the expansion comes out. Then I would drop ESO like a dirty habbit.
ah the choice...GW2 is a lackluster run to the next heart (questhub) snorefest.....idk about the pvp cuz when i did it it was chase the zerg crap..ESO AT LEAST gives you a great story and awesome "run into" sort of non linear quests and thats about half the game. There are doing nothing but improving the game with with the ability to steal from npcs and fence your loot or be the cop type and bounty hunt(the bounty hunt isn't implemented yet but coming) ..from what i understand they are trying to TRULY make this into an ES game..but if lvl cap and no real reward.................and pvp cap with no real reward.....and boring costumes are your thing...go GW2
The fact that this has got to 5 pages with a lot of to and fro should make it clear that you should try both.
Me - personally I prefer ESO
The two things that irk me about GW2:
1. On a dungeon run everyone must know the tricks for how to avoid as many of the trash mobs as possible, else you may be kicked for your noobiness. In ESO I believe you must kill everything.
2. In GW2 everything is so nice. In ESO things do feel more gritty.
I just spent an hour in a public dungeon working on my nightblades pve and I need a break, I was concentrating so hard to not be seen, the mobs were level 11 and I was level 7, fighting 3 level 11's at once made me work It felt good everytime I beat them though.
Playing: Darkfall New Dawn (and planning to play Fallout 76) Favourite games have included: UO, Lineage2, Darkfall, Lotro, Baldur's Gate, SSX, FF7 and yes the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe
Ah the ESO fans lol I love both and right now though GW2 75% off if I am correct so that is def worth picking up and if you buy ESO great too but I do not think it is 75% off for this period of time it will be im sure down the road for promotions.
Honestly GW2 is the better product, speaking strictly from a value standpoint. It has much more longevity, more content, and more difficult combat. That said, what makes the game good is also what makes the game bad (for some). The experience is almost 100% dictated by what you make of it. If you play the game on a level where you are mindlessly doing hearts (quests), and just spamming buttons / aoe, the game will seem very shallow to you. If you are the type of person who enjoys thinking about their games, figuring stuff out on your own and coming up w/ tactics, it's one of the best MMOs on the market currently.
That said, ESO probably does have the more immersive world. It's dark & gritty, and aesthetically elder scrolls. The combat is a somewhat new idea, though imho they've failed with it. They are actively working on improving it, though, so maybe they'll get it right. The lack of cooldowns sounds cool in theory, but it wreaks havoc with the balance & pacing of the game, which gets exaggerated by how shallow most of the skills actually are. They are very few skills in the game that have multiple uses, or that augment other skills to make them more effective. Most of them are just passive 'you gain X damage for Y seconds', with the most interesting probably being the crystal shards proc (spells have a chance of making your big nuke instant for sorcerer).
The WvW in ESO is also a bit better imho, but don't let other posters fool you. It is just as much PvDoor as in most other WvW. They even had a big problem with people trading emperor between faction (letting other factions win to pass the perks around). I believe that's been taken care of, but gaming the system still exists, and the campaigns have but a fraction of the population they once had (hopefully F2P will help that?). What makes the WvW a bit better comes down to primarily the map design (feels epic), and the keep animations of walls being torn down feels great in the middle of a giant battle. If only the combat itself felt great to match.
TLDR; GW2 has more content and better gameplay (imho), but ESO has a more immersive world and better World PvP. If you like mechanics and want a game with longevity, GW2. If you want a game that feels more gothic and immersive, ESO.
this longeivity talk is ridiculous..once i hit max lvl and got all exotics i didn't see anything but a grind ahead of me.
i don't spreadsheet and crunch numbers so i dont care..i game for fun ( as i assume most do)i also rng in some fuckin well hopin for mats
people say GW2 has more content but its just more content noone cares about..like go solo some 20 minute dungeon then wait 2 weeks..so whats left..
immersive=ESO
good story ( and if you actually play it you realize you aren't the soul stolen)=ESO
combat..FPS styled with soft targeting =ESO ...GW2 is just a better looking Wildstar aoe frontal cone...but prob more effective if you tab
crafted gear is the best gear in ESO( w/o a cashop) whats the best gear in GW2?....DOES THE CASHSHOP HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT????...lo of course it does
I do want to point out that ESO offers the most freedom.
Others have mentioned some of the things ESO offers, and many have mentioned GW2. The key with ESO is that any class can use any weapon or or other skill line (World, Guild, etc with the exception to the few other skill lines locked to the other three classes).
You can start off as a duel wielding Nightblade (rogue type) class doing DPS while leveling and later decide you want to be a healer. You can pick up a restoration staff and begin to learn it and find other skills to compliment and with a little investment you can be a competent dungeon healer. Decide later tanking is for you, and pick up sword and board...and any class can also wear any armor type.
With the multitude of skills and builds available it really does allow you to play as you want..when you want. It's not as easy as some games where you just re-spec and go however. You have to learn the skills and level them. To me this allows for long term character growth beyond what the Champion system offers.
This is the point where ESO leaves GW2 in the dust.
I'm not even going to go into how the game is challenging (try pulling more than 4 mobs solo) and I die at least once a night. I could play GW2 and not die in a week. There is something that's fundamentally rewarding about learning to play well in a challenging game.
P.S. This thread sounds like a paid advertisement for Arena Net with all the 75% off GW2 spam. Why do you think they are offering their game for almost nothing a few days before ESO goes buy 2 play? In my opinion it's because they know they stand to lose going toe to toe with ESO with the same payment model.

call out the things you dont like in gw2 but cash shop win? come on now, don't start making things up.
Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?
This is the point where ESO leaves GW2 in the dust.

The problem is, while on paper ESO offers significantly more customization (at least when it comes to skills), in reality little of that actually matters.
There's a reason nearly everyone runs around w/ staves in PvP (though they have been working on fixing such issues). As for PvE, you can solo almost any of the world bosses by spamming certain abilities (not in combination mind you, but each one individually). Some of the dungeons are a little better, but not by much. They've been working on addressing these issues, but they aren't finished. The game has a lot of potential, and if they can actually balance out the combat and make for more interplay between abilities, the game could definitely stand out above the rest.
Something I will point out that no one else has yet. I've been unable to progress my ESO character for almost a week now, since the 1.6 patch. In greenshade all of the NPC's refuse to path what so ever, pets don't follow you, and almost every quest is broken. ZOS has said that they are aware of the problem, but there's not been any fix, or even word of a fix.
In my entire time playing GW2, I have yet to encounter a single bug, ever. Even post patch, I've never personally found a bug. That says a lot about the studio behind the games.
That aside, I think both games offer quite a good value, and offer very good games. Both have good points and bad points, and both are worth the time and money. If i had to break it down into pro's for each?
ESO -
Pros
Visceral feeling world. It just feels gritty and raw, gives it more of a feeling of a living world
Skill system is more open ended, it allows you to create a lot of different builds, suited to what you want to do
PvP area is much larger than other games, gives it a more spread out battle field, making things a lot more tactical.
Great storylines while leveling
Cons
Serious problems with balance between the classes. There are 2-3 builds that just dominate in pvp, with nothing else close. Dragon Knights have been the PvP gods for ages, with 1.6 templars are close if not equal now, able to 3v1 the other two classes.
No real continuing story once you reach end game. Your elder game choices are to 1. grind gear 2. grind veteran (camp) rank 3. AvA (pvp)
Long runs (and when I say long i'm talking 4-5 months) between updates
Community can be somewhat toxic at times, most of the time the only time people will talk to you is if they want something.
Takes for ever to find groups for dungeons. For what ever reason almost no one uses the LFG tool.
Takes for ever for them to to fix reported bugs / problems.
End game dungeon running can feel a little grindish after a while.
GW2
Pros
Amazing community. People constantly just chatting away in cities, a lot of socialization going on.
Cash shop is very fair. Never PTW
The living story is very engaging (esp season 2). This gives characters at max level some interesting and fun storyline changes to stay involved with.
Classes are fairly balanced. Few minor things here and there, but overall everything is pretty balanced. There's not one class I see in SPvP that I just quit trying if i see them.
Has about 3x the landmass that most other modern MMO's have to explore. Even more so than some. It's refreshing being able to level 4 different characters and almost never go to the same zones while leveling each one. (excluding lions arch etc)
LFG tool built in that works well, and people actually use it...
Can go into low level zones and find it still challenging due to the scaling mechanic. This makes it so I can level with low level friends, and still feel like I accomplished something.
Cons
WvW map is cramped, filled with choke points, and entirely too small. Instead of one large map, it's split (instanced) into 3 identical maps, with one shared map. Making it difficult (although not impossible) for small groups to feel like they accomplish anything.
End game dungeon running can feel a little grindish after a while. (both games share this)
Dynamic events rarely feel dynamic. They are very scripted, and get old after a while.
Leveling by running renown hearts is incredibly boring, I highly recommend you not do this the entire way while leveling. Oddly enough renown hearts didn't exist when the game was in beta, people were expected to level by doing dynamic events along, and they were added because lazy players complained that they didn't know where to go. (horrible decision on Arena Net's part)
With all of these points in mind, you have to consider how much each of them really weighs to you personally though. Just because one game has more cons/pros than another doesn't mean that they are all weighed equally.
If you like battle-ground type instanced pvp then the choice is clearly GW2.
The choice becomes a lot harder when comparing the realm vs realm type pvp. GW2 is pretty much lag free and smooth, and it is relatively easy to find and stay in the action. ESO has some pretty amazing sieges and quite interesting tactics but I get a lot of lag. A small roaming team can take out larger "zergs" in both games, but there is a lot less difference in power between levels/gear/classes in GW2.
In terms of pve, I find ESO has a lot more character. It also is a much, much longer game with a slower levelling curve. Another thing about ESO is that it really tries to tell you a story, the way nearly every quest is structured is like beginning a short story the grows and branches out.

Lol, what exatly is in ESO when you finish storylines? 1 zone. raiding and RvR that feels like wasteland. over and over and over again. And that wont change anytime soon, and its been like that for a year now.
In GW2 you can go to any zone you want, whole world is your playground along with usual dungeons/fractals/world bosses of various difficulty from mindless to uber hard/sPvP AND WWW that doesnt feel like a wasteland.
Its really no brainer.
crafted gear IS NOT best in ESO, and crafted gear IS BEST in GW2.
I would say play both GW2 has 75 percent off at the moment and if you get in quick before March 17th you can get TESO quite cheeply on Amazon but I would imagine the price will go up once buy to play starts .
I played ESO at launch and actually enjoyed grinding myself up to the top. I usually dislike grind, but it was actually fine during the time since it went pretty steady. Group finding and pvp was not so great during the time.
I am currently trying GW 2 and trying my best to level. I think the PvP in GW2 might be better than ESO, but not sure. I like GW2 style more than ESO, even though ESO felt pretty good. I tried to get back to the game not far ago though, but just couldn't get into it.
I would still vote for Guild Wars 2. There are good guilds around and I think it's easy to find cool friends.
I have played both games but im going to play EsO right now . Beacuse i played GW2 too much and currently bored.
And you need to know that GW2 mainly zerg game, means doesnt require too much skills in GW2 like EsO. But GW2 still fun game without that skill requirement..
This is the point where ESO leaves GW2 in the dust.

Have to disagree there. With the launch of 1.6 this is no longer true. It's there now.
And you need to know that GW2 mainly zerg game, means doesnt require too much skills in GW2 like EsO. But GW2 still fun game without that skill requirement..
I think the zerging in ESO is far worse then GW2. Especially on the red side of WvWvW with nearly everyone in the zerg train casting AoE. Every person on the zerg train has an assigned task of spamming a certain ability.
I really enjoy questing / exploring in ESO but it's tough to hang with friends due to the heavy phasing. I'm sure this goes away to some extent once everyone is at level cap.
When my buddies and I want to get together and play for an hour or two, we seem to gravitate to GW2 since there's a ton of fun stuff to do and we don't have to worry about gear or levels.
I really enjoy questing / exploring in ESO but it's tough to hang with friends due to the heavy phasing. I'm sure this goes away to some extent once everyone is at level cap.
IMHO the one thing that ESO did right with teams is that you can quick travel to a shrine near your friend for free. You can also quick travel to a fellow guildmate the same way.

oh the irony lol
Have to disagree there. With the launch of 1.6 this is no longer true. It's there now.
IMHO the one thing that ESO did right with teams is that you can quick travel to a shrine near your friend for free. You can also quick travel to a fellow guildmate the same way.
