I have really been wanting a Fantasy game with Eve mechanics and I hear this is it, but a couple of questions come up...
One, is friendly fire on? I.E. do you have to be careful lobbing about AOE spells and shooting pell mell into a group with your bow?
Two, in Eve, every single thing that is crafted matters, because everything has worth, is that the case here, or is there no use for "level 1" swords once level 3 swords are available?

Yes, friendly fire is on. You have to be careful with AOEs but direct fire weapons aren't much of a problem since it is tab targeting. Be aware, it is still being developed and is not a polished finished product by any means. If you want a finished game you may need to wait a year or two.
Forgot to address crafting, everything you make in game matters. Mobs only drop the most basic weapons and armor, recipes, and crafting mats. Everything else is crafted and sold by players.
Thanks E.
But to clarify, as an example, will that first basic sword I can make matter, even later when much better ones are out?
Ie, in eve, the very first ship you make matters, cause all ships have a purpose, same for a tier one weapon system, etc.

You can still use the basic weapons but they won't do as much damage as the higher tiered weapons. It works the same way in Eve, people can still use tech 1 frigates when they need a throw away ship but will use tech II frigates, interceptors and such, when they want to do maximum damage. In PFO, I foresee people using the tier II weapons and armor most of the time but equipping the tier III weapons and armor when they are getting very serious.
Archaegeo, The things you can craft early on will be superseded by later crafting, but it will be useful to someone. The crafting system is divided into tiers (Tiers 1, 2 and 3) and have different capabilities. Here's how weapons work as an example.
You swing at a bandit with a sword. The system generates 3 rolls (d100 three times). If you are using a Tier 1 sword, the system chooses the lowest of those three rolls. Tier 2 gets the middle of the three, and a Tier 3 sword uses the highest of the three. So (and this is likely not mathematically exact), you get a 25 on average with a T1, 50 with T2 and 75 with T3. So use the highest level you can competently use, based on the need to use it and the risk of losing it.
The same system is used for armor, but defensively. The developers/programmers can dissect that better than I can, but it is a pretty interesting system, Note the Tier 1 gear is the new crafter stuff, and players advance through that skill level pretty quickly (a coupe f weeks to maybe two months). Once players can use Tier 2 gear they will spend maybe the next 6-8 months using Tier 2, maybe longer. Gathering, refining and crafting Tier 3 items will take very dedicated craftsmen and the skills to use the weapons and wear the armor will be only for a trickle of characters in the first year or so.
Crafters matter, but at the lowest level the gear is pretty limited. Advance is you are going to be a dedicated crafter, or stop if you just need a crafting skill advance.
Hmm, doesn't sound as much like Eve's crafting then.
With Eve, that T1 ship you make has a use, because people can use throwaway ships to an advantage during some engagements when loss is likely, i.e. there is always a market for everything you can make.
If people in PFO will be concentrating on getting T3 gear because its the best, that sounds like normal fantasy MMO end game grinding for gear, where in Eve, you may be able to fly a T3 cruiser but choose to take out a T1 frigate to mitigate cost/loss or just go places you cant with the T3.
Do you forsee a market for everything that can be crafted?
