What is so good about this game?

MalaricMalaric Member UncommonPosts: 11

Hi,

I played it for a few days now. To me this doesn't feel new at all, it's like Battle of Immortals or similar games, cash shop has gotten good comments but to me it feels very expensive unless you want to grind splinters at a rate of 1 per 8 minutes f play. Everything that is good costs splinters and a lot of them.

The story is kind of cool, super heroes cool (obviously), but the game feels unbalanced. Quest line gives hardly no rewards, takes a fairly long time to complete but is very easy. Doing random boss killing runs in team play areas (but without teaming up) gives super fast xp and millions of items that you just sell or donate. It gets old pretty fast.

What did I miss here?

Of course they are different but there are similarities. Both in game play and cash shop. MH is a more polished game with a deeper story etc. but still they are isometric action mmos with cash shops.

Your comment was  more an insult than an answer though. Not at all helpful.

It's an aRPG built by some of the same people who have brought you the best games in the genre.  If you are not a fan of grinding bosses for loot then this style of game probably isn't for you.  Not an insult, just pointing out the primary goal of these type of games.

As far as the cash shop is concerned the only thing they sell that can't be earned otherwise are skins and storage space.  Your complaint regarding the time it takes to earn enough splinters to buy new Heroes or Team-ups (sidekicks) IMHO is not a very strong argument.  They allow a fairly decent size initial roster of Heroes that spans the majority of play styles and you can play all of them up to a certain level before having to pick one as your free "starter" Hero.  On your initial play through the story you will earn enough splinters to purchase any other hero you might want to play, though I would argue that picking up a good Team-up is a better use of said splinters as they provide a permanent buff to your entire Hero roster.

Short of choosing a starter Hero that is currently under powered you can easily enjoy all the game has to offer with your free starter Hero and never spend so much as a single cent.  All the while earning splinters to allow you to expand your roster of playable Heroes.   There are fine examples of bad cash shops in the market today, Gazillion's Marvel Heroes cash shop is not one of them.

Oh and before I forget, I know I mentioned one of the pay walls is storage space, the reality is they have to make money somehow (all "free" games have to build this in) and this is the way Gazillion has chosen to do it in Marvel Heroes.  With that said I have a good friend of mine who plays regularly, owns about half the roster of Heroes he's purchased completely through the use of gathered splinters and still gets along just fine with the free storage space that came with his first starter Hero.  Is it limited?  Of course!  The real question is does the lack of additional storage space really limit your ability to play the game?  To which I will argue, no it does not.

is there a subscription to this game where you just pay a flat monthly fee to play? or is everything chunked in 5 and 10 dollar bundles to where if you wanted total access to the game it would cost hundreds of dollars to unlock everything? I'm feeling like if it was a subscription based game I might sub for a few months to give it a try - but I'm not going to spend 800 dollars to cash shop unlock everything.
  • miguksarammiguksaram Member UncommonPosts: 835

No subscription.  If you are a completionist then yes, in order to gain access to all the skins and storage space you would need to spend a couple hundred dollars on their bundle packages.  However, if you want to enjoy the actual content, not fluff, then you don't need to spend anything at all.  Unlike a lot of games that make similar claims, your play time and the power of your character will not suffer from spending less than someone else.  The development teams gives away free stuff all the time (multiple times a month) and should be considered the industry gold standard for customer feedback.

One thing I forgot to mention in my previous post, if you see a Hero you want to check out and they are not a part of the "starter" Hero line-up you can always install the test server and use the free G's they hand out to pick said Hero with max level and gear at no cost to you.  This what I usually advocate to new players who are thinking about picking up a Hero with their splinters.  Very few games who's sole revenue comes from a cash shop allow this type of access.

Thanks miguksaram, very helpful info!  This was what I was looking for, if I'm going to spend some money on a game I want to know if it is worth it first. Some of these games just want more and more cash the more you pay. Sounds like this one is different.

I've still not understood the idea of the game completely though, it seems a bit too easy to actually warrant getting new gear and such, but maybe it changes at higher levels.,

Depends on the gear you're looking for.  In general, at higher levels, uniques are rather easy to get.  However, getting optimal rolls on the various variable stats on those uniques are another matter entirely.  And some uniques (particularly boss-drop exclusives) are especially hard to get.

Bsaically, like many aged MMOs, getting enough items to be strong is easy, and getting enough items to be perfect, on the other hand, is not.

...that said, pretty much everyone will end up raising multiple heros and alts just to find new things to do, I imagine.  However, there are a LOT of heroes and most of them play VERY differently from each other (even before taking into account different skill builds for each one).  I guess for most players the "goal" probably becomes to just play up and gear up as many different heroes as possible just for the fun of it (a goal which lasts longer than you'd think because, again, there are tons of different heroes).

(Yea, there are some benefits to having multiple levelled heroes, but for the most part, people level up alternate heroes just for the fun of playing another hero)

Splinters seem like a long uphill slog at first, but it's not as bad as it seems.  Lots of "shortcuts" available

Watch the Orcz.com Marvel Heroes code page for special codes to enter to get free stuff.  Sometimes it's just for a boost or two, but there've been codes for random heroes in there.  You get a normal daily login reward, as well.  I don't recall where I got it, but I have a chest in my inventory that gives me some money, items, and a splinter every 20 hours.

If I recall correctly, you get a random hero for completing the story for the first time, as well.  And they're always having events that give away free stuff.  The last one for the Big Ten gave you 5 splinters each day along with a crapton of other currency just for logging in.  It's good to watch for and read the emails they send; a few times they've awarded a free random hero just for logging in on a certain day.

The only hero I actually bought was Ghost Rider, and I have 5-6 heroes right now, and have enough splinters for a few more.  Kinda holding on to them to see which characters they release, next.

My personal opinion... it's not a great game for hardcore players that want to play for hours a day all through the week.  But it's good to pay attention to it to get the free goodies, and go nuts with them on a night when you're in the mood for some superhero beatdowns.  Pretty fun.

I could write a lot more in-depth about what a new player can expect from this game but it's already been compiled on a youtube video with a helpful "skip ahead" guide so I'll just post the link to that instead.

I have a great respect for Gaz and think they do the best they can with the resources they have.

I am however not a fan of their recent focus on endgame raiding because it has brought the stink of elitism that I left other games to get away from.

Recently the last of my 5 friends that I started playing the game with (at launch) quit because the time requirement to be effective and do raids(lvl69) was too much for them.

As someone who still luvs this game I hope they focus more on developing more content for everyone and not just the ftp players trying to get a free raiding experience.

Ok, thanks for all the great answers guys.

I'll try it a bit more in a casual way. I guess this game is a bit too excessive in the crappy loot department for my personal taste. Reading loot stats to try to min/max the right skills can be fun to some extent but when after 15 min of killing you need to go through 50 items compairing stats it has gone a bit too far :P

If you plan on playing casual then it's a great game.

Just vacuum all loot other than uniques to cybernetics(pets) or donate then to the vendors. Do crafter and enchanter 1st.

I was just about to say that.  Don't bother with the greens, OP.  Purples, and at 10th+ level uniques and cosmics will be common enough to where even blues aren't worth keeping unless you're looking for a very specific stat bonus.  As Bruce pretty much said, Not much point in donating to armor and weapon vendors, but the crafter and enchanters will be pretty important.  Donate your blues and greens to them, along with the daily "delivery boxes" you get with the daily login bonus.

I find the game fun and when I only have 10 or 15 minutes to play a game this is the perfect fit.
DOAC is still the MMO I judge other games by, My first and still my favorite.

You are not missing anything. I am a huge fan of action RPGs and I love every single one of the Diablo series, most notably Diablo 2. And I hated this game, it's the most boring and bland action rpg I've ever played and I have played all of them and il have enjoyed most of them. So this type of gameplay is definitely my kind of thing, it's not you OP, it's the game. And yeah you are not misisng anything, the game is horrible.

The draw of this game is not about challenges (if you want challenges, play D3 greater rift ladder, or hardcore). The ONLY place i see some challenge is the one-shot, cosmic midtown or industry, and the raids .. when you are not super geared.

The primary draw of this game is really about playing many many different marvel characters. They are all great and very much play as what you will expect what they can do from the comics/movies. And each play very differently.

Loot optimization does not come into play until max level (not unlike other ARPGs like D3). I like this game almost as much as D3, but i enjoy it in a different way.

BTW, it is not difficult to get more heroes ... eternal splinters can be had as login bonus, they are giving out 5 a day now for the avenger gift boxes. I did buy an avenger pack long long time ago .. but i have also earned a bunch of heroes by just playing. Once you get a few .. just leveling them up + the bonus/gift will get you a bunch.

Umm, you actually get to play marvel heroes? Instead of making a generic character. Plenty to do ARPG!

This is the big thing. I don't play DC Universe precisely because i don't want to play the "apprentice" of batman or superman, or some knock off "super dude".

If they let us play DC super heroes, i would still be playing that game.

I put a lot of hours in each week and I find there's plenty to do if you like leveling alts or grinding for high end artifacts.

It's not a great game for hardcore players that are attracted to something like POE though.  Gazillion has completely ignored that niche for the most part.  I think they could adopt some things from POE but it would likely splinter their community too much and divert resources toward something that may not even be all that successful at attracting POE players..

Anyway, I love ARPGs and for me it's the most addicting ARPG since Diablo 2.  I love unlocking heroes, prestiging to craft new costumes and just killing stuff in MM.  My play time has gone down a bit lately, but every time I try D3 I get bored to tears pretty quickly.  What a horribly shallow game it is.

I enjoy this game a lot.  The Devs appear to really listen to the community and their love for the game shows.  They do give you a lot of stuff and players are always dropping loot they don't need so other players can pick it up and use it if they want.

and there are so much "stuff" in the game .. from the very large hero roster (and increasing very fast) to the team-ups, and new content.

I heard they are going to add a game mode based on Age of Ultron.

I particularly like their "52 review" .. which makes a lot of the old hero designs better and enjoyable. Some of the ultimates are pretty amazing .. i particularly like the Iron Man "house party" and Cap's "Avengers Assemble".

I just got Rogue from a random hero box, and it is very gratifying to see that they didn't water down her powers, and really let her steal powers from other heroes & villains.

I wonder how they are going to do Antman .....

  • BitripBitrip Member UncommonPosts: 279

Marvel Heroes is so good because it's made by the same people who made Diablo 2. It's not P2W...not even close. You'll only want to spend money to unlock heroes and/or costumes. The amount of attention the devs give this game also makes it worthy of praise.

It's a decent action rpg with some nice variation to the end game grind / currency. There are lots of short and long term goals which are nice to fulfill for players of all kinds of caliber. The cash shop isn't too intrusive in terms of gameplay but you'll be pushing inventory space if you're a hoarder like me. While the action is nice I don't think there's too much in the way of theorycrafting in terms of builds. While some will look to maximize their skills and damage you can do end game stuff without having to wiki anything.

Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

    it's fun it's well made it's free.

it also have some of the most fun classes(heroes) that i've ever played..

anyway other than D2 this is the only game i've enjoyed in this category.

I had fun once, it was terrible.

I'm not a ARPG fan in the least, but I can't get enough of this game. I don't know what it is, but it's just so fun and easy to get into to. I think that it's Marvel which helps
