So loving GTA V now that its out for the PC and the Online version is pretty damn awesome.
Maybe it is just me, but from my limited experience with GTA V Online so far, given its pretty phenomenal scope and breadth of activities, it feels as much like a MMO as other MMO's and more than some tracked here (Skyforge).
Yes, the limit of 30 players per world might nix the MMO aspect, but given that there are MMO's where you all stand around a central hub and then go off to 8-32 man instance adventures, it seems to meet the criteria.
Also, there is character development and progress, items to acquire, and just SO MUCH to do in a HUGE world (at least the city feels huge to me, I still have no clue where I am most of the time.
What do you think, should GTA V Online qualify for MMO status?

Yeah.. sure .. What the hell.
For the longest time i complained that MMO's should be big, massive, as the term "MMO" would suggest, but so many tiny lobby based games are being called MMO's these days that GTA could be considered one as well..
Whatever, i give in.

Actually you can completely turn off PvP if you really want, though I think you lose a lot if you do.
You can set it so you only pvp when you go into pvp jobs, and you don't have to do those.

I know. But as you said, if you turn off PVP (enter solo session or go passive mode) the list of things to do narrows significantly.
And that is my main gripe with GTA Online. It's cool with friends. But, playing solo, it's either suffering thorugh gankfest or wandering around aimlessly with almost no structured "quests" to do.
I have not played it and find it tough to buy a game that based it's sales on foul language and sexual inuendo.
However i have played two prior versions, got bored with both within the first few days making it tough to want to purchase this rendition.I decided to watch a couple streams and both streams i never saw another person in the game,so as far as an mmo aspect ,i would say definitely not.
When comparing to other games to warrant the MMO title,i think many of us already do NOT acknowledge many of these recent MMO's as actually being MMO's.It seems there is one side that thinks just because a massive amount of people can login, that warrants a title, the other half of us think nothing of the sort.
You cannot have just one SMALL non game play aspect like a login screen determine if it a mmo or not.Lobby games are not MMO's and unless a game PLAYS like an MMO ,it is also not a mmo.
As far as effort goes.i would say from what i have seen, the game offers as much quality or content as many of the current mmo's.However the entire series does one thing i don't like, meaningless 2d buildings that are nothing more than fake backdrops.I believe every single building in a game should act liek a real building with doors and insides. The obvious reason is because i know how game worlds are made,so it 100% ruins the immersion for me knowing how little effort went into the world.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
While I agree it would be nice if you could enter all buildings, you absolutely cannot say little effort went into the world design till you drive/walk/fly/swim around it.
The attention to detail and world details are just incredible.
I do agree it sucks it is designed around being a criminal and supports all the negative stereotypes of internet personalities, but its still an amazing accomplishment.
Regarding gankfest, I have not found that to be the case, and you can toggle the no-pvp off and on if you are worried about it, or change to another server if the one you are on is full of gankers.
Nice thing is if they gank too much, they get flagged for it and are only put on servers with others like them.

Re the Structured quests? Those are all over, and you can do heists and a "playlist" of jobs.

Best MMO made this year, maybe even best MMO ever made.
If this doesn´t win every single award there is, I don´t know what else.
30 player limit who cares, when I play SWTOR there are hardly 10 people on any planet.
This game is the ultimate MMO living world with endless things to do including side activities.
My only complaint about it so far are the abnormally long loading time going into Online mode and Online servers.
Other than that, yeah, if other MMO's were as "living" as Los Santos and its environs, my god how incredible some of the IP's would be.

The swearing bothers me and so does the violence at times. Especially in Grand Theft Auto 5.
The sex doesn't bother me. I actually think it's fairly comical and that's the intention.
I believe it's all supposed to be taking things from real life and blowing them way out of proportion. Some things will bother certain people.
The game is still great fun. You just can't take anything seriously. In the 90s no one took things seriously in games and there was a lot more fun in terms of making fun of different things in real life. Now you can't take topics lightly in any form without worrying about someone attacking you for it in some way.
I enjoyed the game despite the violence and sex. There are some fun (comical) events going on in the game that are well done. Again some people may be insulted by these things if they take it to seriously. Personally I miss the days when people could just go and make fun of a serious topic and no one would care much.
Why is this difficult for people?

what do you do in GTA V Online?
From videos i watched i had the impression that it was just another team based score shooter like cod but in an open world.
Can you do stuff unrelated to combat in the online mode?
It is just a MOG, not a MMORG but the open world is really good. Sadly have most MMOs walk a different path and focused most of its content into smaller instances while making the open world simple and predictive.
It might not be an MMORPG but one could hope rockstar would make a "Red dead" MMO since they have plenty of elements that would be awesome in a MMO.
A GTA MMO is not something I think would work, after all did the guy who made the first GTA try with APB and while the customization was awesome the game just didn't work. Red deads settings would be much more interesting for us and would open up a lot new experiences we MMO players never seen before.
Rockstar is actually the top on my list for a company that should make a MMO.
So ... lots of those early mmo were not actually mmos since they usually turned into slide shows whenever you had - sometimes as few as about 20 people - in the same space; despite the tiny screen size and low graphics quality. Hmmm ....
Genre definitions only care about the boundaries -- in the case of the "MMO" portion of a genre, that only cares about whether a game allows an unusually large number of players to exist in the same area at once.
The quality of the experience doesn't matter. A bad RTS game is still an RTS game. Being poorly implemented doesn't magically cause it to cease being an RTS game. Similarly a game which lags with massive players onscreen is still an MMO, even if it's poorly implemented.

I have it for PS3, sorta wondering what makes it worth buying for PC? Like is there really good mod tools by any chance?
Edit:

The storys pretty good in singleplayer is what I liked about it on playstation. In online you can sorta play the stock market against other players and theres some mini games like racing and yoga, no crafting or anything though.
not sure about modding tools. The PC version runs at 60fps if your PC can handle it, and better graphics for obvious reasons (hardware). If you dont care about those 2 things then save yourself 60 bucks since you already have it on ps3.
The term "MMO" has lost it's meaning. Now, any game with any kind of multiplayer is an "MMO". Minecraft? MMO. TF2? MMO. Mortal Kombat? MMO.
So, I'm glad you like GTA V, but comparing it to other "MMOs" is completely meaningless.
You can hunt, play golf, play tennis, fly, go watch strip shows and try to pick up a dancer if that's your thing, do jobs for people.
It is far from a "run around fps'ooter"
And lots of games coming out are MMO by that definition above, they have a central hub where you cant do anything and you go off to small instances. In fact if too many people show up in an open world instance, it spawns a new version to handle the traffic.
So, imho, GTA:V Online qualifies just as much as any other modern MMO released these days.
