So... here's a controversial topic: Is it alright to download music online?
Ya know... with the all the stuff flying around 'bout it... thought I would ask... really... that's all... ok... I also have a two page report to do on this topic, and I thought it would be easier to debate the two points of views by asking people... so... take the poll and explain please ^^

many people think it is unethical (i myself try not to listen to music, but when I do, i will download it)
lets say you need a background song for ur pp project...download it!

It's hard to not download music. I fully understand the reason of the RIAA and why artist get so upset when people download their music, they aren't paying for it (rights, etc). It's just like when 8-tracks where around, then tapes, CDs, etc. It's the way music is going.
Why buy a whole CD to get one song when you can download 15 songs you enjoy a lot more?
What I'm getting at is this; you can't stop it because it's just the way of the future now. Sad but true. I even get some greaf because I'm a "dance DJ" and people think I'm taking away from the artist because my music isn't "real" and made by pushing buttons... (which is NOT true)
Music didn't cost anything 100s of years ago, why should it now? Yes I believe they should make money, but don't they make enough from concerts, tee-shirts, etc? Maybe I'm just being silly, but I believe the downloading will only get bigger.

Thats a toughie. I guess its wrong, but until they make it as easy to find any song, sample it, and download it on a pay site as you can get them from the share sites then I will probably keep downloading just for the convenience.
Its really not a money thing to me rather just the ease of getting the music you want whether you pay for it or not.

and back on topic. i really dont think its right or wrong. its kind of the new medium for music for some people. so it just seems so natural to me anymore. ill always buy cds of artists that arent well known, or a band i really really like, or collectors things, greatest hits, etc. its rare though, and i think its wrong that ive been hearing that people have been getting arrested. its there, so people use it. try to sue kazaa/morpheus, etc again instead, its not our fault!

What you're saying is this... I go buy a gun and kill someone, don't arrest me and sue me, sue the gun company. I understand what you're getting at, but they are only providing a service, it's the people thar are using it the wrong way.
I know there must be someting in their EULA that we just click "okay, sign up" that has something about sending music, etc.

well downloading music is nowhere near as serious as gun things... but i guess ur right. just that shooting people is illegal, and dlin music isnt.

That's the thing though, downloading music IS illegal! It's taking from the artist and the RIAA doesn't approve... just like the FBI doesn't approve shooting people. . .
It's just because their's so many people doing it, it doesn't seem wrong. And even companies that sell MP3 players, it's all "legal" if you rip a song from your CD, but to download it.
It's the same with ROMs, if you have the game, it's "okay", but if you don't... that's a whole other story.

its just so easily accessable though. they have gun laws i think, like cant sell to people under 21 or 18 i think. but any1 can get kazaa. and theres nothing music people can really do about, cuz like u sed, kazaa only provides a means to share files, not specifically music, its just how ppl use it.

I know that Kazza and Bear Share and others have laws, people just don't fully read and accept the EULA just to use the program.
I guess the RIAA can now trace where you've downloaded the MP3 because of the title... (i.e.)
Uber1337Dood_MC_Hammer_Cant_Touch_This.mp3
I suppose they are talking about the user name being attached to the file, or if they use a certain program to rip or convert the MP3 it will stick the user name in the file some how... I was watching this on Tech TV.
