Now I’m not talking about botting, cuz let’s be honest we see that everyday almost... im talking about making your mmo game experience better for you that’s waaaay against the rules, and for me that has only happened once, and for a while it was fun!!
It was an mmo called Legend of Mir 2, now I was just going thru bug cave (if anybody remembers this game..) and another char whispered me, who I could not see on screen but could hear him hacking away to the mobs, "Can u see me?" I whispered back "no, but u in trouble?" and he replied “I can see u", which left me confused? Then he explained that he was using a Mir hack that could light up the whole cave, make you run faster and immortal. My first reaction was report this guy... but another side of me kicked in and said no!.. But wouldn’t this be fun with my mates! So he gave me the site link, I downloaded and turned out that you start the game from the hacked exe instead of the Mir exe file... and it worked, i could run around completely immortal all dungeons and caves lit up so you could see what you was running into and run faster.
Kept quiet about it for a few weeks just to see if I may get spotted or caught but never was... until i gave the file to a mate of mine, who completely abused it and was banned!!... I got rid of it after that, as by then it was spotted by the start of running animation speed if you was cheating by using the hack.
Now i know in today's mmo world that the above is somewhat impossible ( well i hope so..), but back then you could get away with it for a short while..
Did anybody else use the same hack or something similar in another mmo??

If I 'cheated' in a MMO?
Hmmmmmm, yes.
Star Wars Galaxies, leveling on Kashyykk expansion, everything was bugged or unfinished because it was rushed (thanks SOE Smedley!) so you couldnt progress properly. There was some sort of repeatable quest/instance where you got insane amounts of XP.
Only 5-6 instances ran at any time so on my server (Eclypse US) stood a line of players taking turns going into the instance, kill, get XP and get out and go back to the end of the line. Quite a social experience though, lines were like 30-60ppl long at all times.
Then again, the whole expansion/ zone to level was bugged with rushed unfinished content so there wasnt any alternative, and SOE knew about it, yet did nothing to stop the faster leveling/finish the content.

No, I can honestly say I've never cheated in an MMO.
To me, it's no more acceptable than cheating at cards, Monopoly or RL sports.
No, not even in single player games that have console commands and well known cheats. Not because I have a higher moral standard but because I just don't see the point of cheapening and ruining the game experience for myself.
It's a weird mindset this cheating in games we play for fun, Is it actually worth anything to be the wealthiest or most powerful if you got it by cheating? Even if others don't know you did it, you know. I don't have any proof of this, but I think that cheaters get bored with the games they play much quicker than non-cheaters. How can you have enough respect for the game to keep playing it after you trivialized it by hacking it?

I have modded a lot of games, have tried to avoid modding mmo's though, and i try to avoid mods that give me unfair advantage, like god mode and or equal, wall hacks, aimbots and such.
The line between legit modding and cheating can sometimes be a very blurred line, for example the FoV mod in GTAonline has gotten into heat lately, many users were banned, some players say that increased FoV is a cheat, while some people argue that its purley cosmetical and does not give unfair advantage, even though increased fov is clearly a advantage when it comes to gunplay and awareness. You see more of the field, so you have the advantage.
Im blurred on that issue, I would like to have a FoV slider in my shooting games, cause I'm used to using 120fov in my games anything below that feels zoomed in to me, and im after immersion in my games, i don't want to run around feeling like i have binoculars on my eyes. so i increase the fov as soon as possible in most games i play, still i have not modded my gtaonline to incresae my fov due to them banning people for doing so, even though i really want to increase my fov for my own immersion, not to get a advantage in gunplay, i mostly go stuntbiking in gta, and never shoot anyeone else.
I had friends in wow who could spawn money and fly without mount, speed hack and teleport to coords, i never used any of it during my 4 years in wow, even though i had friends who used it nonstop.
One side of me thinks all games should be released in two versions, one moddable open source, and one closed vanilla legit no cheating version. What Can i say, i rather paly a game with awesome fun mods, then the original version anyday, most of my favorite games started as mods of other games.
Bugs = player item/stat loss ingame, game rarely gives you back.
Glitch = player gain ingame, called exploit and frowned on even if used to counter the effect of a bug..

erm, sorry to tell you, but botting IS cheatng and surely nothing that is accepted by now.
and no, i never cheated for personal advantage.
all i did was to test artificial aiming in APB once, to see what i have to fight against, and quite frankly... it was a joke
why play shooters if you have scripts aiming for you? i will never understand cheaters. and i don't want to.
THIS is the only reaction i accept when dealing with cheaters
ps: you don't "cheat" anyone in single player games, therefor.... do whatever you want there ofc
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
it depends how you define cheating - if simply by breaking rules then yes, if by trying to gain unfair advantage over others then no.
for example when i used to play muds, it was on most of them forbidden to multiplay, but since it was sometimes hard to find group for some dangerous kills, i simply logged in char of some of my offline friend and multiplayed with him. also we e.g. shared quest information (for solo advancement quest areas) or used other char to locate items for solo quests, which was also forbidden.
Yes.
When another money bug happened in Vanguard, I joined in with everybody else who was online.
Why ? Because I knew the devs wouldnt do a rollback (they didnt before, when I "missed out", either) and because I needed the money and wouldnt know any other way to get it anytime soon.
Short of months of extreme farming.
And I was right. Again there was no rollback, which IMHO should be standard procedure after such an event. Instead they banned some people who had especially efficient setups for farming and had made about hundreds of times of what I had managed.
I would like to point out that I didnt enjoy the event itself at all and that I didnt bought a single thing from other players from the money I gained, i.e. from my side the event had zero effect on the ingame economy. It was all for affording the top armor in the game which was, among other things, also horrendously expensive.
I dont remember any other event in which I cheated.
Oh, dont remind me.
Imagine being bad at languages in the first place, not being a native englishspeaker, and then attempting to solve quests done by people who are (a) native english speakers and (b) out to make the syntax especially hidden and hard to solve.
I never ever managed to solve a single quest in a mud by myself. I ALWAYS had to ask other people for the exact syntax.

No, I never cheated in an MMO. Not botting either, which is definitely cheating as well imo.
Unless you count macro's (not the recorded ones, which can basically be bots), but that's a pretty wide definition then.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
i also botted a little bit in AC1 but it was extremely boring sitting there watching my character play the game for me. and i was allways to chicken to do it afk because i didnt want to get banned. ( back when they use to actually check ).
but the only time i ever cheated was in the early days of AC there was a dupe going around and i duped a couple pieces of armor, i guess just to see if i could. the armor wasnt really worth anything.
but i never been a big fan of cheating. and it has ruined alot of good games for me. i love to pvp but when hacks run rampant i normally just quit playing and that has happened alot in MMOs and for sure in FPS. hell FPS use to be my favorite type of game now i dont even touch them because they are so hacked up its pathetic.
No. Never. What kind of satisfaction can you possibly get knowing you achieved some goal by cheating?
I think it's pretty pathetic how botting gets a pass now. So sad. Just play the fucking game the way it's intended.

Never cheated in an mmo or any other game.
No. Never felt the desire to cheat or bot in any online game. I've always seen it as defeating the purpose of the game.
When I was a kid I had the NES Game Genie. It was an amusing gimmick for a short time but I don't remember using it much past the first few days. Of course you were going to win when you have infinite lives.
There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own.

I have "cheated" in the form of exploits on numerous occasions, as anything that is part of the game is fair game imo. I play PVP focused games so playing to win is obviously the point within the confines of the game, and coding errors and oversights are part of the game. (Never been banned on any game either)

No, I did use the necrotic travel skill in GW though to complete a bonus mission that was close to impossible in Guildwars once (one in the crystal desert, the one with the siege)but Strain actually said he included the skill so players could do stuff like that and if the lead developer thinks it's OK it can't be cheating.
Cheating in a multiplayer game is just pathetic.
"This is life! We suffer and slave and expire. That's it!" -Bernard Black (Dylan Moran)
Same here. I'll hack the crap out of any single-player when I'm done with it, but multiplayer games aren't the place for that for me.
EDIT: The OP is an example of several common justifications for breaking the rules:
"Now I’m not talking about botting, cuz let’s be honest we see that everyday almost... im talking about making your mmo game experience better for you that’s waaaay against the rules, and for me that has only happened once, and for a while it was fun!!"
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein
"Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
I frequently use quest/gear guides in MMOs. So I certainly do often have a leg up on people who don't do any reading.
But the lowest thing I ever did was to buy (for real dollars) a 'Mattekar Hide Robe' in Asheron's Call 1. It was an ultra rare piece of mage armor, and when it finally became clear to me that it was never going to spawn in the game world again, I did the dirty deed.
In an mmo or multiplayer game? No,
Single player game?
Well, that would be up for debate. As I mentioned in another thread, after I play through the elder scrolls games a couple of times I will alter new characters in ways I see fit that "fit" their character.
If one of them is rich (royalty) I give him money. If I've downloaded a sword/armor mod I make sure they can get it at the start and make up a back story as to why it is there.
One of my characters in Skyrim is "Elric" I downloaded this awesome Stormbringer mod that was from a french modder. It looks great but I didn't like the scripted abilities as I felt it made him overpowered so I redid the abilities to better fit what Stormbringer should be. I then "never" add health throughout the leveling process as the character is supposed to be weak but gains power with the sword.
For one character in oblivion I wanted them to have a buff to give to the small "army" that was protecting Bruma as I liked the idea of saving most of them so I gave him this buff which I only ever used during that battle.
The way I look at it is that it's my experience and if I want to tailor it to some specific back story or characterization then I do it.

I didn't see it as cheating but if botting is cheating then... yes
Dark age of Camelot I had a "Buff bot" which early on I ran a shaman on brothers computer for buffs (obviously). A tad bit later (7 months) I started working so I was able to afford my own accounts. Leveled up my own Shaman, Healer and Skald and I would run 2 accounts from my computer. 2 expansions later I found out how run 3 accounts from one computer and iv been doing that up until I stopped playing Daoc competitively.
