I have mixed feelings on these type of games. On one hand, I'm glad to see them make their way to the west and if it's a good game, then it should do well. On the other hand, the track record of games ported from the east hasn't been all that stellar overall.

I would like to think that if people like GW2 and EQ:N couild see the combat and see how well it flows that maybe they would improve how they do their own combat.

I always thought that if the Secret World had the combat and characters of B&S, it would be the best game ever made

one of the reasons why they dont do well, is because we get them years later when they start to look dated either at release (and yes I've been playing MMO's since 2001, and I've seen people complain about graphics of old asian mmo ports) and definitely 1-2 years in.  so its already dated when it gets here and that doesn't help attract additonal players after release.  and please dont tell me 4 years later isn't a bit dated.   in order to be successful the mmo has to get a bunch of players at launch, retain them, and attract new players over years and years and maintain them.  can't do that when you are already 4 years in the hole visually.

this game was soooo boss in 2012!!!! now its more, meh, lets check it out.

True but you also will get all #¤%& launch bugs fixed long before release.

I think a lot of the problem has to do with story and quests, Korean and Chinese quests and story seems far less evolved in general and most quests tend to be about killing a certain number of mobs, and often a far greater number then in a western game.

The combat can often be good and graphics usually is fine (if you like the art of course).

Character customization, both when you make the character and the number of gear skins in the game also tend to be far more in Western games. It seems like easterners are more interested in looking good than having a unique look when they play.

Weeeell, we shouldn't complain too much there, 90% of all armors in western games would be more in the way than actually help you in battle. Adding spikes on your helmet or shoulderpads is insane and would make weapons stuck snapping your neck or shoulder. And a lot of weapons look useless in real combat as well.

Lets not have the discussion about how realistic MMO gear actually look. Or for that matter why plate is considered heavier than chainmail, it is far easier to move in plate (if you want numbers for it then the pseudo science show Deadliest warrior measured it, plate hindered you about 15%, chainmail close to double that. I wouldn't believe it just for that but my own experience is the same).

People tend to confuse plate armor with tornament armor which isn't made for actual combat and weight about twice as much. I blame Hollywood movies from the 50s and 60s.

We really should force both western and eastern MMO devs to train actual 14th century combat for a week, might make them to improve the combat system a bit as well.

And no, I couldn't say I'm actually good at it myself, I own an armor (11th century) and a few swords though and can the basics but any real knight would have cut me down fast.
