After diving in for the last couple of days I was shocked to see how good the original game is compared to most things I have played over the last 10 years.  It is really interesting to experience something that requires effort on the side of the players and doesn't bury you under empty congratulation with easy advancement, rewards,etc...

If you are curious about what the old school MMOs were like and something that still has some of the hardcore components I would highly suggest dusting of your old Sony / Daybreak account to check it out.

Noticeable things:

  • Classes/ Roles you fill in the game are defined more than most MMOs.  Everybody can't do everything
  • Combat is slower and facilitates talking / coordinating with other players even during the heat of battle.
  • An area grows on you and feels like home, since you can't teleport/recall/Fly all over the place you tend to stay in a local area much longer .
  • Adventure happens without being led around by the nose on quests, moving around your local zone can be tricky with the varied leveled monsters and everything wandering around.
  • Monsters can be challenging,  Patrols, Assists, no Leases all add up to a more challenging environment. Player will be punished for failing and failing is easy if you don't pay attention though you only lose a bit of xp unlike the full corpse loot like original EQ.
  • Items matter, the world isn't littered with thousand of disposable magic times to throw away.  Items have few level restrictions with very few No Drops, so you use what you find and give / sell what you can't.
  • More adventure when exploring / leveling in Dungeons than most MMOs.  Your group has to be focused and coordinated,  there isn't some scripted dance or patches of red to avoid.  You have to watch your surroundings, hunt for monsters, avoid trains of monsters, etc..
  • Advancement through work, not attendance.   Building up your character requires effort and takes time,  there is no free ride, daily quests, rest xp, etc..
  • Grouping is the core of the game,   anyone can solo play but their rate of advancement will be slower except for a couple classes.  You will be most successful when actually playing / depending on other people !
