Expansions are not for new players, they are for the old ones. It's like this in every mmo under the sun, yet somehow FFXIV gets grief for it.
This is true to an extent, but new players shouldn't have to trudge through older content to access it.
By that logic, imagine having to go through all of EQ1's expansions from scratch. That's 15 years of content you would have to do in order to experience their latest expansion.
There needs to be balance of content and a person's time, otherwise the game will suffer in population when all the old vets stop playing, and all the new players stopped playing due to the barriers of old content.
This is only their first expansion, but I can see what you mean. Perhaps it will be an every other expansion hop kinda thing? Obviously the current model is not viable for a long-term (see: 5+ years) plan. People will definitely avoid the game if that's the case.
They can't really do what they did with ffxi either in terms of adding new zones that aren't geared towards capped players. I mean honestly, if you look in terms of ffxi's CoP expansion, who would be really stoked for content/quests/zones geared towards say level 30 players (basically what CoP was) when you already have tons of quests/fates/dungeons for leveling up?
It just doesn't work in the WoW-type environment. In ffxi, since quests gave no xp it was a boon for those players because it introduced new zones to camp for xp. In ffxiv? I feel like it would be wasted.
Fyi , from what it sounds like is. That a lot of the older dungeons. You are now going to be able to solo. There going give a option to turn off level sync and item level sync. What dungeons will be that , My money is all the story quest line dungeons up to 2.55 ish.

This is exactly why my significant other and I finally quit a few months ago, after playing from the day 1.0 launched. We liked to craft and we like to play together, but dungeons and raids are the very definition of anti-fun to us, and we don't play a video game to NOT have fun. We put up with it and forced ourselves but with 2.55 we had to call it done and over for us.
It stinks. We don't like it. We love the world and lore and our characters and the stories we had as roleplayers, but when we realized nothing would change and we'd be locked out of the expansion entirely due to said forced content and the i-level requirements? That was our breaking point.
Oh well. Live and learn. We've now found a game where so far we can duo to our hearts content.

These jobs were always meant to start at level 30. Giving new players access to a free level 30 seems a bit goofy to me.
So start the jobs at level 1? They already did this with Ninja (Rogue). The new jobs should have followed the same format. Forcing me to play through a metric ton of content on a class I don't care about isn't very appealing. I don't agree with people who think the barrier is too steep because they need to complete the story to get to Ishgard. I don't mind doing that. I just want to do it on a class I like.
This will end up being a dealbreaker for a lot of people who are only just now interested in the game at all because the jobs they're adding are the ones that appeal to them. Maybe I waited on playing FFXIV until my favorite class (let's say, Dark Knight) was added. Woot! Now it's here! Oh wait, I can't actually play this until I take some other class through the entire game and then into the expansion? I don't really think this is a defensible position. It's an unforced error that will cost them potentially new customers for really no upshot that I can think of.
Rogue is a class that starts at level 1, a class that you can't make out of character creation and have to have a level 10 combat class already to start. Ninja is a job that you can obtain at level 30 rogue and 15 pugilist. There has always been a gate to every job.
Sure having to get into Heavensward might seem too tough for people, but storywise it makes sense. The people who can teach us these jobs are in Ishgard.
No character just knows a job, you start with one class and work your way up from there, why should anyone be given a free job? I doubt ANY of us are going to be able to login day 1 and start a Dark Knight with out some questing.

This is my main gripe with the expac. I understand the gating to the new areas (level 51+). But, the classes/jobs should be available for any new character. I was planning on making a new character for my DRK. Guess I'll just have to use my current one instead.
everything can be done casual mode , all the main story trials and dungeons are atm faceroll easy and u can die on the first second that the other 7 will be able to do it w/o u.

I bought this up in my FC and my LSs in the game tonight about this article. Everyone of them said this Article and the complaining from this Forum about
"Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Column: Is the Barrier to Entry too Steep?"
They do not care if more people come to the game. They are happy the way the game is going in design and will continue being designed. This was well over 200+ people over 5 Linkshells and my FC chat. I seen it when I got on tonight. Ever all you griping about "I DO NOT WANT TO UNLOCK THE NEW JOB BY HAVING TO HAVE A LEVEL 50" All LOL at this joke. Guess what Death Knights win WOW to get one you had to have at least a level 55 character or higher and still has this requirement.
Now I have EVEN MORE for you. Everyone complains about the storyline being too steep and needing a 90 item Level. One member of my FC hit 50 last week, brand new player Tuesday I believe he said. Guess what. playing about 1 to 2 hours a night he already has all of the storyline done and is sitting around item level 90. One week a few hours a night.
Basically what everyone was saying is people who play this game do not care what a bunch of forum goes say. They are happy in game, Playing the game, and PAYING A SUBSCRIPTION for the game they are enjoying playing. If you dont like it, this game is not for you. Move along find another game you like. SE is going to care MORE about the current player base which is PAYING to play not the people on the MMORPG forums complaining about a game they are not even playing or paying to play. Why? They know if they upset their current player base they will leave and their current player base heavily came from FFXI which did these kinds of things and are good with them.
So dont like it? Move along.
O and Edit right here.
And if anyone knows about how Restrictions work in MMOs they normally are their only for a little while. AKA the Death Knight in WOW where you needed a 55+ character on that server to create a DK.
So the Storyline restriction for the first month or 2 is not going to be an issue especially when people at Max level get a good amount of tomb stones for running a lower level dungeon so these dungeons will have people running them for a while.
O and if your complaining about Queues being more than 30 minutes and not wanting to make a few friends to queue with. Thats your own fault. While yes people play MMOs SOLO guess what they were never designed to be a FULLY Single player game. So if thats how you want to play your play style is causing the issue. Make a friend or 2 queue with them and you will have instance queues.

Why do you need to make a new character? You can do all the jobs and classes on 1 character. Have 1 job to 50 already. Great Start your Dark Knight at level 30 on the 19th of June. Now if you are starting new on a new server, Guess what its just like the Death Knight from WOW when WOTLK released. You had to had at least 1 character on that server to level 55. Yea now that restriction was removed however Day 1 of WOTLK it worked different.
I also want to bring up Foomerang gripe which lead to this article.
Foomerang Gripe is that he has to switch from being a Full time Crafter in FFXIV to needing to go back to COMBAT to get into the HW expansion.
First of all FFXIV is COMBAT Focused. If you have any ideas that this game is not COMBAT focused. Well you need to level a Combat class from 1 to 50 to get access to really everything in this game. So No if you just want to be a Lumberjack in FFXIV this is not the game for you. It is not UO where you could do that.
Basically what people here who are not paying to play FFXIV that are crying about vs people who pay for the game and are not upset with it or like it. I wonder who SE will listen too.
I thought it would be hard to finish the storyline having resubbed about a week ago and I was on the Shiva fight part of the storyline. I was wrong. Just finished the main storyline tonight, Steps of Faith - one shot and done. I'm fairly caught up, my ilevel is 93 and I have only a endgame quests to finish up(not really necessary but I want to get em out of my quest log by completing them). I plan to focus on those few quests while leveling my alt jobs up in the next few weeks in waiting on Heavensward.
That being said, yeah I can see it sucking for crafter/gatherer only type players, but honestly, besides that, FF has always been about story and party play. Even the solo player games made you fight with multiple characters in a party, not one character only. Plus, it helps weed out impatient players who always want to rush through things and consider those who don't rush beneath them. You know the type of which I speak. Just take a ride in WoW's LFG for a day and you'll see em.
As for unlocking jobs, you can't do that till you hit 30 anyway and part of the charm of FFXI and now FFXIV is going and doing the quests to unlock "advanced" jobs with each expansion. It's doing something different from other MMOs and in a genre that is getting oversaturated with the same gameplay elements, this is a GOOD thing and shouldn't be shunned.
Really enjoy FF14, taking a break for now but if you never done it the main stroy line you are forced to do is easily the worst feature of the game. It is like 200 quests many of which are very bland boring, and or gated by having to complete some of the end game content.
I love how it leads you to the end game content but the sheer number of quests that gate you from accessing the content is way WAY overboard specially if you are newer and have to eat them all up at once as opposed to veteran players who only have ot knock out the little bits that are added at updates.
they really do need an option for newer players to warp up the quest line because it kills it for most. I had 3 friends palying leveling up enjoying the game and all 3 crashed and burned during the never ending monotenous story quest line. It is easly 40 hours to complete.
The notion of comparing FFXIV to "Every MMO expansion I have experienced" is invalid byitself, because FFXIV is unique and different. That's why it is still going on strong, with 4 million subs (half of WoW's)
FF has always been about the story and if you are playing this because it's a MMO, then you might wanna try other MMOs instead, because this is first and foremost a FF game, not just any MMO.
As a new player who just decided to get into the game this last weekend, I don't see any issues with this. If you have specifically chosen to not do content, how can you be surprised when you must complete the content up until the point before the expansion, especially in a game heavily focused on the story? I'm looking forward to getting through all of the current content and then purchasing the expansion when I'm closer to/at the end of the story so far.
So far I'm really glad I decided to pick up this MMO, and not GW2 or ESO which were the ones I was considering with jaded glasses. FFXIV has been a refreshing experience so far, one that I can feel pulling me into it whenever I can't get on and play. Loving it so far.

40 hours?! Oh no, an MMO that requires you to spend double-digit hours to complete story quest-lines - That is UNHEARD of!

Just a small correction. ARR has zero level 1 jobs. Jobs start at 30. Classes start 1. The level 1 class for Ninja is Rogue. Ninja is a job and starts at 30 after quest.
Edit: Also as someone else pointed out a lot earlier in the thread. i90 is pretty much what the cap was for the most part back when game launched. Getting i90 is pretty trivial. Hell when Ninja dropped I was 50 and pushing over i100 in less then a week. Pretty streamlined now. Do 50 dungeons and trials for low end ilvl gear (save tomes). Get relic weapon and upgrade it. Next get accessories first over armor to get ilvl up with tomes. Once high enough start running ST easy way to get i100. While building up tomes to get upgradable i100 gear, oils, sands.
In War - Victory. In Peace - Vigilance. In Death - Sacrifice.

yup ,this a 2 years old game, u gotta do 200 quest in 1 month (expansion release in 24 days) i did it in 2 years....waiting every patch to see whats going to happen next ....i couldnt be more happy with FFXIV , the ending of 2.0 have been AWESOME , i only feel pity for ppl that avoid reading/watching the story , yeah there are some bland quest mixed , but is like watching a Movie or reading a book , some pages/scenes , are going to be boring and then it gets interesting ....but in the end the whole movie/book is worth it.
I read that thread, and I have to agree with Foomerang a bit here. I too think the barrier to entry is way too high. I agree totally with requiring completion of the story, however. FFXIV is, first and foremost, a story based game. The fact that it is an MMO is beside the point. The creators clearly wanted to stay true to the "spirit" of the Final Fantasy series, and that means story above all.
My issue is with the 90 gear level requirement. If it was 70, or even 80, it would be far easier for me to justify the purchase. I quit a while ago, and my gear level was just barely 80. I refuse to purchase a new expansion, and then spend weeks grinding away at old content, after having completed the storyline just to get into the new leveling where we'll be replacing all that gear we earned anyway. I like the game, and I love the direction the devs took it after its 1.0 flop, but the requirements to get into the new content is just poor design. I'd give it a shot if there were a system in place to bridge the gap for returning or new players. Too bad there's not. Guess I won't be returning to Eorzea like I thought. Oh well.

Disregard everything you know about itemlevels for now. You get i100+ gear thrown at you like there is no tomorrow.
It took me 2 weeks to go from i50 without my relic to i115 with everything done including the storyline. I could have stopped way earlier but I found myself actually enjoying the dungeons and raiding so I stuck with it a bit longer than expected.
After finishing my initional character I am still collecting so many "tomes" that I could easily purchase a full i100 gear set for another class and have it ready when it reaches level 50.
People are making themselves crazy on these forums by throwing around amounts of quests and hours you have to do. Simply enjoy the game and you will be finished in no time. If you don't enjoy it, once again, then the expansion is not for you because it's gonna be the same thing all over again, probably with way stricter item lockouts again to stretch the content.
they really do need an option for newer players to warp up the quest line because it kills it for most. I had 3 friends palying leveling up enjoying the game and all 3 crashed and burned during the never ending monotenous story quest line. It is easly 40 hours to complete.

I get it your a rabid fanboi or a troll, probably argues the original ff14 was a awesome game too. Let me spell it out for you, it is that playing for 40 is long time for an mmo, it is that EVERYTHING IS GATED BEHIND IT. So you are excited you just hit level 50 what next..... oh you got 40 hours of boring generically shitty errand boy quests of running back and forth over and over and over and over, add in a liberally amount of "duty finder que times" as you wait to to get a full party which takes forever if you are dps just to do the same old content you already did because you must redo it to pass go.
It isnt fun questing it isnt interesting, it is a BURDEN that you you have to slog through or quit to continue playing the game.
Laslty just to put you in your place for being a shitbird retard. I have all 8 jobs level 50. I played the game alot and that story line quest was utterly painful and 100% should have opt out for those who are not enjoying it.
In my opinion, the problem is the "forced" Dungeons and trials to progress the storyline.
Even with the extra incentives, no one Queues up for the pre-50 Dungeons anymore. Queue times are ridiculous!
And when Heavensward is released and People are far into the expansion! Good Luck catching up! Not going to happen.
People will be long frustrated and gone and quit again, before they reach Level 50! As nothing is more frustrating that not being able to progress the story, due to endless Queue times for dungeons and trials!
So, having to finish the storyline all the way up to 2.55 is not the problem. It's all the "forced" Dungeons and trials that are tied into it that are the problem, as less and less people queue up for them.
I am currently stuck myself in post Level 50 story line, where I cannot progress further, as no one is queueing up for this specific Dungeon.
Hence, I cannot even progress my weapon quest and no one is queu'ing up anymore for the Chrimea trial. :-/ Have tried several Nights queueing up.... after 2 hours every time I just gave up. I just don't have the time to sit in front of my PC for many hours at a time in hope the Queue pops up. /sigh
The problem is we are weeks from Heavensward and alot of people, myself included, are doing other things or playing other games to be fresh and ready for the xpac. Sure some are playing story catch-up, but I can see why there would be a drought on trials like chimera when everyone's focus is on heavensward right now.
The queue times will be normal just as soon as the xpac drops. All the tanks (DK) healers (astro) and dps (machinist) queuing for duty roulette and what have you. All my friends are evenly split between the rush a 50 to 60 camp and the grab a new class and rush that to 60 instead.
Did you even read?? /facepalm I could care less about the weapon quest now. I rather finish up to 2.55 so I can enter the darn expansion content! But I can't!
You would expect that People are prepping for Heavensward right now and that at least the post Level 50 required Dungeons for the storyline up to 2.55 would have normal Queues. Nope!
How is this going to improve when Heavensward releases? When everyone will be busy playing in Heavensward! With new dungeons and trials! New higher gear levels!
Please enlighten me?
Fact is! There is just no way to catch up anymore! Too late! Not unless SE makes the decision to make all the Dungeons and trials "optional", so you can finish all the story quests up to 2.55 SOLO!
Well thats why its an mmo join up in a FC and do the stuff you need help with there are plenty out there willing to help members progress there just no excuse at this point and i haven't had a problem with Qs at all with older content i personally think you aren't patient your expecting a fast Q which isnt going to happen either way. Just wait and stop complaining every game has there own type of thresh hold you have to overcome. Man if your complaining about this glad you didnt play ff11 online jesus u would have quit when you have your first level cap to finish. stop trying to play an mmo solo or find a game that u can do solo instead of wanting them to change the game completely to only suite your liking.

Just look at the way EVERY other game does certain professions. The only difference is other games call them specializations or some other fancy term all doing the exact same things.Play said job/class to level 10 or 20 or 30 then you pick a new specialization.
I don't hear anyone complaining about those designs.doing the same thing.
The REAL problem stems far deeper into the game design than jobs or when you get them.FFXI did the same thing, some jobs only opened up at level 30 because they were considered elite jobs.Look way back at SWG and the Jedi class, you were not just handed the Jedi class.
I loved playing every class in FFXI and almost from level 1,except perhaps Thief lol, needing level 15.In FFXIV i felt like every class was bland and boring, some say oh wait until later it gets good,i don't buy that at all.Every single aspect of the class/combat design was done half ass and rushed it is about 50% as good as FFXI's design.I love the crafting and graphics and world design and i don't mind instances at all. However they SHOULD have had water zones by now,no excuse just more proof it was rushed out and now they feel if they add water zones they have to add them into old zones as well.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Short answer: No.
Long answer: Nooooooooooooooooo.
the ff14 class system is almost as bad as the tsw's skill wheel
cumbersome and obscure does not equal innovative or hardcore

Move along.
Here is the FFXIV Facebook page and where people who play FFXIV are ripping apart this article. https://www.facebook.com/groups/84017816585/permalink/10152922456011586/
