Steam "sale" on GTA 5 is kinda dodgy

fivorothfivoroth Member UncommonPosts: 3,916

Steam is an awesome place to buy games dirt cheap. However, sometimes it seems that steam are being cheeky with their pricing.

I bought GTA 5 from steam shortly after launch and it cost me £39.99. Now I see that they have a 25% "sale" on GTA 5 and the game has been "reduced" from £51 to £38.99.

Am I missing something or steam randomly hiked the price of the game and put it on "sale". That's very cheeky and misleading. Considering the game will be back to £39.99 after the sale.... It's more of 2% sale.

They probably hiked the price to £51 at one point. I believe it's illegal to have sales off of X price unless it's been sold at that price at some point in the past by the retailer.

All percentages they refer to are based on the original retail price... at least that's my understanding.

Percentages off are based upon the current standard price. Not the launch price. That is how it works.

GTA V deals are proper pricing on my account (North America though). BUT, I did notice most of the GTA V deals include some Shark Cash Card thing, and for a bit more GTA IV or Max Payne 3 come with it.

With that said, its not unusual for pricing to be off for a bit at first. The folks over at Steam are very far from perfect. Every steam sale this happens and then morons over at reddit post it, and repost it, and repost it again as if its something new. It seriously gets fucking old.

STeam has been very Strange as of late.......they sent out Emails saying we could get Refunds for Any game for ANY REASON

it actually said FOR ANY REASON........so I tried to email them about a refund and they told me to Email there Email...so I emailed them again and I got another email saying I should email them

I guess they actually are not giving out refunds for anything....Even though they said in there email FOR ANY REASON

Steam is Very Missleading in how they word there stuff....it is horrible actually

Read a post over on Reddit warning people that Steam may inflate game prices. be wary.

edit : just looked at sale price. Listed as $59.89 at 30% off yet before sale it was 59.99 if I recall correctly.  So the sale is giving you a whopping 10 cents.

Sorry, I worded it wrong, I bought the game shortly after launch. I didn't benefit from any prelaunch deals or preorders. It was the regular list price one month or so after the game came out on steam. So £39.99 was definitely the regular price.

Yeah you're right there is some shark cash card thing. Maybe that's what's inflating the price of the game.

Im pretty sure that was a pre-launch sale price. As a matter of fact Im 100% sure.

It kept saying for about a month "Get it on sale before it goes up at launch!".

I had planned on getting it but as I just changed jobs and didnt want to spend any money until I was sure it was right for me, I passed on the sale.

Look at the sale more closely.  It's not a sale on GTA V.  It's a sale on the Grand Theft Auto V & Great White Shark Cash Card bundle.  The cash card is worth $1,250,000 in GTA Online.  The original price of this bundle was $79.98.   There is no discount for buying the game without a cash card, but it is still listed at the $59.99 price.  There is no deception here, just people that don't look at all their options.
  • viney123viney123 Member UncommonPosts: 69

Exactly. The sale is for a White Card essentially free WITH the purchase of the game. That's a 20 or 30 dollar value extra, right? That's why it's pretty much the same price.

Why would Rockstar do this? It's because they want to make more money off of their 'Cash Shop' which is the Shark Cards, and not have to take a hit on the actual game itself.

PS: They're already bleeding Shark Card purchases alone because of hackers giving money or generating money which makes buying those money cards useless!

GTA V isnt on Sale on steam. The sale that GTA V is included in is a combo package. GTA V is at its regular price of $60 USD with GTA San Andreas at a reduced price of $3.74, and a Tiger Shark Cash Card(which I had to look up cause I didnt know what it was, the Tiger Shark Card is like the SWTOR Cartel COins Card it adds cash to your GTA V characters). So instead of paying $79.97 you are paying $59.99. So you are basically Buying GTA V and getting GTA San Andreas, and the GIft Card for free.

And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"

GTA V is still $59.99 by itself on Steam. Not on sale.

They are sold separately;  When you are on the steam page for GTAV, the last segment in the purchase options is for Shark Cash Cards.  They are sold in multiple values, so there is a dropdown to pick the value of card you want to apply to your steam account.

I stand corrected.  I was using the Steam app on my phone and all it said was GTA V 30% off from the catalog view.  I didn't click it to verify if it was a different version.

Edit: apparently people are saying that Steam just removed GTA5 and replaced it with the bundle.  See thread below:

GTA V is still on the SteamStore and I know this because I have steam installed on my desktop computer. I always check my steam desktop client Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's for sales because that is when they usually announce the sales. The only time I got screwed by Steam is when they had Fable 3 + DLC(No longer on Steam) for $5 for the game and another $5 for all 5 of the DLC. The problem was that they underestimated the number of people who would buy the game and the dlc and ran out of serial keys. It took them close to 17 days to fix this problem and then another week to get Microsoft to validate the cd keys.

Yeah you're right there is some shark cash card thing. Maybe that's what's inflating the price of the game.

There may have been a sale prelaunch but the price I listed was the regular price after the game released and was the price leading up to the sale.

But yeah they are offering some sort of card with it so it's a combo deal. I got confused as it said 25% off gta5 only when I saw it in the list and I didn't actually click it as I already own the game anyway.

At least you admit that you was wrong most people wont do that. They will make up excuses or try to distract you from getting the answer out of them. For that I applaud you.

My opinion is Rockstar is intentionally ripping customers off plain and simple.

They removed the ability to buy the original GTA V copy of the game when the sale started they added the new copy with the sharkcard. A few hours later after a ton of complains on their forums they reinstated the original copy and also have been tweaking the prices.

Co-incidentally the sharkcard which is used automatically nullifies any refunds.

Of course it's always possible to give them the benefit of the doubt but the whole practice just seems VERY dodgy.

Rockstar would have known people would be holding out for a sale and to offer one and claim 30% off when realistically it's been the same price most of the time since release and throw in a shark card is at the very least strange.

The facts are there. At the end of the day Rockstar is a business and they want to maximize profit which they are doing. Unfortunately it just appears that they have duped their customers and lost potential buyers (myself for one will not be purchasing GTA V until they acknowledge their mistake or at least provide an explaination for this)

I just wish more people would vote with their money too instead of just buying the game regardless and leaving a negative review. I'm sure piracy for this game has just skyrocketted today too
