Perhaps they are using the modified engine so we can MOD FO 4 even more for the masses?! Why would they scrap a code that is easily accessible for PC users to extend the longevity of the Franchise?
I am beyond excited for FO4 and it's future! I will not tell you to stop being bitter about mmo gaming at its current state or the constant disappointment of each new release. But i will let you know how pumped i am for FO 4 and the countless hours this Franchise has taken from my gaming life and has given me ALOT of return value.
Originally posted by Razeekster I'm reposting this from IGN because I think it's important for people to understand what they are buying: What people need to know about FO4: It is using the same exact engine that Bethesda Softworks has been using since freaking Oblivion (the gamebryo/creation engine)! Yes it has been updated, but what people don't understand is that there are limits to how much such an old engine can be updated! ..... People complaining about Bethesda Softworks using the gamebryo/creation engine (even if it is updated) have a legitimate reason to be upset. It means that FO4 will have a lot of the same exact problems that Skyrim, FO3, and FO:NV had. Those are old games by 2015 standards and those problems should not exist in a game that is coming out this year! It is very clear that the update did not fix these issues either, as the animations still look to be terrible from the gameplay that has been shown, and the faces of NPCs still look very dead.
Bethesda fans are well aware of the limitations of the Creation Engine. But frankly, I don't care about the quirks of the engine, as long as they deliver an entertaining game.Game play > graphics > engine !I will most definitely not refuse to buy the game simply because Bethesda didn't write a whole new engine for it. Get real...
It's an outdated engine. I am real. I refuse to support an AAA+ development team that is clearly being lazy. There is absolutely zero reason for it. I'm sorry, but I remember from Skyrim how painful it was to witness NPC bugs and their jarring movements, not to mention dealing with the terrible companion AI.This is 2015. I'm not paying to play a game that is using an engine that is so horribly outdated, but you enjoy your old-gen game! Frankly it is disappointing to me that any player would support Bethesda Softworks, when it is so clear they are not putting their all into their games at this point, but just riding the coattails of past successes and expecting modders to fix their sloppy coding. Like I said, there is zero excuse for such shortcuts from an AAA+ development studio.
.... I cant even find words. Its not the same engine as from oblivion. It has been updated, it has been refactored, it can continue to do so indefinitely. What difference does a "new" engine have? Just because its newer doesn't necessarily makes it better. The engine they have been using for years has all the use cases they require for their games covered so what benefit would there be to put hundreds of man-years re-inventing the wheel only to solve the same usecases?Yes there are bugs, glitches and anomalies but these are complex systems in the context of the open world games they are trying to develop.Lets also not forget even these "new" engines (which i wish you would specify) have many many man-years worth of R&D and production time behind them and more often that not based on predecessor code.
It is the same engine. Updated or not, it is still the same engine. They updated the same engine they used from Oblivion for Skyrim, guess what? Skyrim still had many of the same issues that Oblivion did because it was the same engine! Also, poor animations and buggy NPC AI cannot be excused in a game being released in 2015. It just can't. It's not like this is a game being released from an indie development studio.
You also don't seem to understand the difference between an engine update and a brand new engine. A brand new engine strives to solve all the issues the old engine had, and is able to do that since it is being built from scratch. An updated engine can only do that to an extent since. There is a difference.
My friend, you have no idea.
You just don't start from scratch after investing millions of dollars and time in an engine you re-design, refactor and update.
Of course its a different engine. what you say is contradictory.
If you go through those you will see there is major changes including a new realization for rendering, and if i remember correctly they even have mega textures as a feature.
Doom bfg is not doom. Fallout creation engine is not gamebyro version X.
As for you complaints about AI and such: That's something they should look at. If fixing bugs were as trivial as you think they would be plugged and patched then and there.
got news for you, bugs like to hide. and they hide well.
You do after using the same engine for ten years. The engine has the same issues since Oblivion, it's time for an upgrade. You can disagree, but a ten year old engine can only be "updated" so much before it's time to scrap it and build a new and better one.
This announcement made me leak a bit. I have to go now and change my pants.

Having heard stories about game studios I doubt anyone is being "lazy".
And as another poster already pointed out, the reason is most likely that they invested years and money to bring their engine to where it is. Good and bad.
They could very well go with a brand new engine but what other issues will that cause? They might solve some and then create new issues.
Obviously it's not perfect as there are always bugs in the elder scrolls games. I wonder if that is because of the scope of their work, the engine or "just them".
They aren't the first game company to use a game engine over the course of years and projects.
Considering I still play morrowind and skyrim it's not really a big deal for me. Or said in other words "I think I'll live".
More on topic, I'm not so excited for Fallout 4 but more excited for Doom. That looks like it's going to be fun.

im thinking what the guy who talk about engine say : they are a AAA dev team and not indie dev they could have done the ''alot of work'' for create a new engine for this generation and this game''.
they are a multi million bussiness and they will make alot of cash with this game when it release.
all he stay still stand: they picked the easy way.
people who say : it can be alot of work are right but why we dont deserve that? they will probably sell the game in the 50-70$ cash range.
that just like saying: well they would need work more for it so we accept crap or inferior game engine.
well if you accept crap easily like that, they will keep give you crap because you buy it !!!
dont get me wrong the game will be fun and all, but nothing like a new 2015 engine and graphic would have give.
same for witcher 3 btw, they dowgraded the graphic for the console, they could have work keep the pc graphic good but ''to much work'' yeah that one of the best game this year for sure but the graphic looked almost 2x better 1 year ago...
well if you pay, they dont improve or work harder, for exemple if im selling my pizza 20$ and no one complaint i dont put alot of stuft and toping i will keep doing it !!! cost less, more money for me !! but if people complaint im sure going add more on this pizza.
all he stay still stand: they picked the easy way.

I would probably prefer to hear from actual programmers and people in the business. From a business standpoint it seems odd that a company would completely trash their already working engine for one that might fix issues but might add them. Or who knows, maybe making a brand new engine that will accommodate your current game play is easy?
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I'm looking forward to the game, but I think it's losing the nostalgic feeling of struggling to survive. The abilities to build houses and power generators looks cool, but to me it isn't how Fallout was meant to be. From the E3 video it looked as if you can build a "Garrison" type area like in WoW where your encampment becomes attacked. I don't want to have to come back to my shelter all the time to work on it. I hope it's not like that, I like the freedom of full roaming. /shrug
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
Wow Bethesda, I would just like to say thank you for not announcing your game when it is years away from completion. I am so so tired of hearing info about games 4 odd years away from completion that end up being NOTHING like what they originally stated it was like.
It's an outdated engine. I am real. I refuse to support an AAA+ development team that is clearly being lazy. There is absolutely zero reason for it.

Sorry, but these excuses just don't work for a AAA+ development studio like Bethesda Softworks. If they cared they would put the work into it. They have both the money and the resources to do it.

Just because a company has money and resources doesn't mean that they should "throw money away" on something that they might not deem necessary.
That is why I'd be more interested to hear from programmers, people in the game development business than someone that just has a strong opinion.

As I've already said (and others) making a new engine might solve some things but maybe it would create new issues. Maybe they don't see the advantage. Maybe they are working on a new engine but it's not ready yet and they don't want to hold up development until it is.
Maybe it's not the engine at all but just that the bethesda guys have sloppy programming. Maybe the scope of the work is just so large that they can't "get it all".
too many variables.

The game is running on the next generation of their creation engine featureing full physical-based rendering and dynamic volumetric lighting. (5.04 in clip at Fallout gameplay)
To me both look visually very different, but will admit it aint completely next gen in visuals but definitly miles apart in details between 3 and 4.
I loved FO3 but enjoyed FO:New Vegas more but looking back at them compared to FO4 the world did look somewhat bland in it's colour pallet, regardless at the time I had a great immersive experiance.
And I bet FO4 will give that fibe once again atleast to me. And still feel it looks so much better then 3.
As for your comment of The Witcher, the game looks great and play's great. That downgrade is mostly mentioned because people read about it. Then again most try to play what is promised instead of trying to enjoy what is given.
