I think comparing countries is kind of an "apples and oranges" thing.  America is in a very unique position because of the constitution that our country was founded with.  foreign countries commonly say things like "the US needs to ban guns" - but they don't realize that this is IMPOSSIBLE in our country...our constitutional rights are promised to us.

Canada is a great country.  I spent a lot of time there as a young lad.  However, I think it is important to remember that they don't need a large military for one simple reason...they have the most powerful country in the world as their #1 ally and neighbor.  If the United States downsized their military and focused on providing free medical and welfare checks - who would protect us???

I think our generation is very pampered...we did not have to live in the world that our grandparents did - if we did we might think twice before screaming about reducing military funding.  The US has not been seriously threatened by another nation for a long time for the simple fact that we have a very large and advanced military.  It only takes one Adolf Hitler to ruin it for everyone.

I believe the US will stay in Iraq to make sure the country is stabilized.  Why waste all of the lives and money to remove an evil dictator - only to allow another one to fill his shoes?  People nowadays want everything FAST and NOW.  Reinstalling a new government in a foreign country that has never felt free is not like ordering a happy meal...it is going to take time and money.

Mew.... If we got rid of guns there'd be no wars... blame Edison.

Not sure about that.  There has been war since long before the invention of the rifle image  Before there were rifles there were swords, before there were swords there were rocks and sticks...and before then we just used our bare hands.

Stopping crime and murder will require deeper thinking and problem solving than simply "take away the weapons".  We need to try to solve this problem at its root - in other words find out what makes people violent.  Being in this industry, it hurts to say it but I think our culture is largely to blame.  TV, movies, music and yes - video games are making violence an everyday part of life and Americans seem to cling to these things much tighter than the rest of the world.  I don't think it is the sole cause though - there are other factors like poverty and poor family values that make up part of the pie.

I think simply blaming guns is the lazy route.  It is like solving our drug problem by making arrests...when we need to find a way to stop people from wanting to use drugs.

Everything you've said Admin is very true.

Reinstating a new "free" government will take time and money like you've stated,  and keeping our troops (and other countries) in Iraq is going to be the key.

I must admit myself I highly enjoy Canada... but for different reasons.

    I'm just going to stop. . .

Well mr Admin, I have to agree with you completely!  Its not a simple thing that we can all point at and say "Thats it!  Thats the source of all our problems!".

It will take alot of thought, caring, empathy, and effort for us to overcome our problems and its not something that will happen overnight.

I have been fortunate in having been able to travel to lots of countries and to have lived in a few outside of the U.S. for a couple years here and there and it has been exciting to see other cultures and how they live.  Despite the problems we have here in America, and every nation has problems, ours just get the spotlight, there still isnt another country I would rather live in.

We are in a unique position with the wealth and power of our country, one that allows us to affect the world on a much larger scale then many others.  With that power comes a terrible responsibility to use it wisely and in the best interests of everyone.  Countries are made up of people, and people arent perfect which means we will make mistakes.  Despite the mistakes we do make, America has done alot of good in the world where another country given our prosperity might have been much poorer stewards and neighbors.

The future lies on all of our shoulders, and its a scary thing.

I lived on Vancouver Island.  Very nice place. . .  and I believe more hightech then where I live now.

Their McDoanld's takes more then Canadian money,  they speak french and english,  they also accept creditcards.

Here in Connecticut,  we only take "American" money and only speak english,  or at least 50% of the times.  It's that or Spanish.  image

Sorry about earlier, but I mean to say that guns are a cowards' way out. Anyone can use it at any distance, at least with a melee weapon you most likely see it coming. But yeah, I think it has to deal with TV and everything. Course some people are just delusional like me that they actually want to do stuff that's in the tv/video games/etc. I mean look at SWK, would he really be trying to fight if there was no SW?
