Roleplay

It is very easy to get into character and express yourself in a text based game. DragonRealms and GemStone have an amazingly extensive list of emotes that allow one to roleplay their characters very convincingly. How much emphasis will be placed in creating emotes for Hero's Journey? Will there be many animated emotes upon launch?

The character customization tool should go a long way towards creating unique toons to roleplay in HJ. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

i'd love to see RP as a huge part of the game, that would certainly give it a long life beyond reaching the "max" level. RP is really the key to good overall content regardless of early game, mid game, end game.

I think Hero's Journey has a lot of potential to be the mmorpg that roleplayers will love.  After spending some time on the forums at Play.net and reading and posting on the Heroes Council, I have learned that the community and following for this game and previous ones such as Gemstone, etc. are made up of roleplayers.

Emotes in a mmorpg are important, especially in a graphics-based game, to express character feelings and attitudes.  Some of the most fun I've had to date in a mmorpg was when I played Star Wars Galaxies.  The wide range of emotes with the very convincing character animation really helped me develop and express my character, and my friends said it was great to see the use of the emotes in this manner.

Hope Hero's Journey lets us do this too!

While at Dragon*Con last weekend, I managed to snag a demo. The demo included something of a little example for emotes.

The character walked up to a low wall outside a cathedral, and an icon of a stick figure sitting appeared to one side of the screen. The demonstrator clicked that icon, and the character grabbed the wall, hoisted up, and sat down.

He sat down about three feet ABOVE the wall's surface, so there are still some kinks to work out, but...! It seems that many of the environment-affecting and environment-interacting emotes will be context-sensitive, which should make it much easier to actually use them.

I sure did. Darn whiny villagers, can't do anything by themselves...

Neat.  That part of the demo is new.  We didn't show it at E3.  It shows off some of the stuff we've developed since then.

And now I have two requests for you, Melissa: 1 - A screenshot of HJ-Chade's wacky GM character (the one with all the peg limbs) and 2 - a short vid of some emotes and this villager quest.

I'll give you a cookie. Promise. image
