The pricing is a rip off though, they are basically making previous owners of the game repurchase the damn game to get access to the horizons expansion.

It doesn't even include all of the planetary landing either just part of it, to get access to all of what planetary landing is you will have to buy the next season....

Also they are taking a page out of Star Citizen and reoffering the Lifetime Pass albeit at a hugely inflated price...it was 50$ previously and now is 195$...lol

It's £30 / $45 for exisitng owners of the game. That doesn't seem too steep for a year's worth of content by any measure. If the pricing offends people so much they always have the option to wait and pick it up on sale or whatever...

You're right it doesn't include atmospheric landings on earth-like worlds but lets just consider what that actually entails. It's a huge undertaking when they want you to be able to fly anywhere, land anywhere etc.

The latest dev update gives a good impression of what this first installment of Horizons will be about, and it sounds great - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=172863

It's a rip off because even with the measly rebate they are charging more for the "expansion" than what the core game costs.

Furthermore people like myself that bought the standard beta were told we would be able to join future beta but now they have decided only premium beta people can join in beta for free.  They have changed it so to get into new beta free you need to have a lifetime pass when originally that wasn't required and the LTP was just a pass to get expansions free, it had nothing to do with betas.

Also give the pricing in USD to give people a more accurate idea of the costs.  I have no problem paying for new things like planetary landing, as indeed they need a decent cash flow, but having to rebuy the core game at full price to access an expansion IS a rip off especially since it really just adding a mechanic to land on "airless"  moons/planets........ and then in a future expansion they will charge you again for this for "atmospheric" landings lol.

No they're not. The game on their store is $45. If you have the base game you get $15 off the expansion which brings it to the same price.

I don't know about the beta stuff but it now sounds like you're trying to find things to complain about rather than actually having complaints. Pay or don't pay, that's all there is to it.

I gave the price in fricking USD as well as Sterling. You read it, you quoted it and you still missed it... Besides what do you mean "a more accurate idea of costs", it's not just yanks that play the game or read these threads...

No need to get all personal attacky on me there buddy.....I think the pricing is a rip for those like myself that paid 75usd for standard beta even with the rebates it will cost more than the standard game to get what I paid for previously,

Like I said in their forums for new players it's a not bad deal, for old standard beta backers well..it's a spit in the face kind of thing.

We basically have to rebuy the core game and lose out on our beta status.

Do the math base Horizons is 60$ usd and includes the core game which is 45$usd which means the expansion is worth 15$ usd.

Existing players get a 15$ usd discount which mean they are making us pay for the core game again (45$usd) but not the expansion.  Compound this with standard beta players lose their beta access...unless they buy beta horizons because they decided beta access was tied to LTP.

Or.. the more realistic way of looking at it is; the base game devalues as time goes on. We've seen this already with the Steam sale pricing therefore when Horizons is released it will cost $45 and the base game will essentially be worth $15 at that point but obviously Frontier will sell them as a package because they're both needed and therefore it'll be $60 in total.

Do you feel that the World Of Warcraft Battle Chest is a slap in the face for people that bought each game individually? Do you feel that Steam sales are a slap in the face for people that paid full price?

It nearly always works like this to reduce the barrier of entry for new people getting into the game, besides you'll have had more than 12 months of available play time before Horizons comes out...

I sure hope they avoid the number one current problem with E:D ..... lots of space, little to find. Hopefully they are seeding those billions of rocky planets with stuff generated via procedural generation.  Does not work that well in the space flying part of E:D at the moment.

The pricing strategy is a FAIL !!  Why should i buy the "Horizons DLC" and AGAIN pay for the main program I already paid for ??  Why is the DLC not available separately, without having to pay for the main game AGAIN !?! Thats not "opt-in" as in SC, thats MANDATORY and cannot be avoided at the moment.

HHmmm, trailer analysis ... landing space ships ... check.   Surface rovers ... check.  My avatar that walks around ... missing.

Because you're not paying for the base game again.

New accounts get the base game included for a reduced price ie $60 total = $15 base game + $45 Horizons, whereas existing accounts can purchase Horizons for $45.

    Does that make sense?

Although I love the original Elite on my C64, in todays' standard the base game is barren from any content.

When I play it I still feel like I am playing a beta. Plus it's hardly multiplayer, most players opt for co-op or singleplayer.

Before releasing a 'expansion', imho they should add tons of various content and make the game different then the 'explore unknowns', 'buy here-sell there at the same space station powergrind' game what it is today.

Again, I like the idea behind today's Elite pretty much, but they haven't even completed the base game yet, why add a expansion?

WoW... What a ripoff... So they delivered a beta game without much content and while me and my friends were waiting for some content (be it solo or group) they announce promised features as a FULLPRIZED TITLE? Are they fkn serious?

I went from E:D fanboi to a 'FU Frontier' guy.

They wont get my or my friends money, that's for sure. Gaming seems to be about scamming these days...

I don't disagree. And yet, for all its shortcomings Elite has given me the most number of great gaming moments. WOW would have been the last game I piled so much time into and that was 8 or 9 years ago. I thought I'd outgrown the ability to be mesmerised by a game until Elite came along.

What I'm trying to say is everybody's view is subjective and everybody makes allowances (or not) as they see fit. In my case I appreciate they've only had 2.5 years working on it so I'm a bit more flexible about what it should or shouldn't have at this point.

Personally I'd rather pay for a yearly expansion than get directed towards a csh shop at every opportunity or for the game to have a monthly sub.

Sadly way too expensive for an exp pack.. I did enjoy Elite for a bit but not paying full price for it again.

Initially it will be every planet without an atmosphere, which includes moons obviously. No idea how many that is, a ridiculous amount regardless.

No, right now they are selling both horizons which is the base game with the expansion included for 60$usd BUT they are still selling the core game for $45usd so there's no core game devaluation going on.  In fact I bet you with each new season they will charge the full price but include previous seasons.

They know the "seasons" are not worth a full game price so they will keep offering previous content along with it so they can charge more than it's worse.

What they are doing is forcing older players to buy a "bundle" as if they  were new players that never paid for the core game or if you like better they are not offering to let old player to purchase ONLY the expansion without the core game included.

As for WoW I never played that rip off.

Current box owners: just buy the expansion, pre-orders should get a discount.

New players: buy the expansion at full price plus only the core game at discount.

That's how it should be. The core game is 'old' now. And should be cheaper.

Unless you're talking about antiques or collectibles then something new always supersedes something old, thus devaluation, and therefore the newer item has more perceived value.

They are selling the expansion at $60 BUT if you are an exisitng owner you get a $15 discount so the expansion actually costs you $45.  If you buy the base game now you get X amount of months to play before Horizons is released. If you were to pre-order Horizons I would imagine you get to beta test but cannot play the base game until Horizons is released.

They know the "seasons" are not worth a full game price so they will keep offering previous content along with it so they can charge more than it's worse.

Like ANet including GW2 with Heart of Thorns? Like Blizzard giving me MoP for free? This is a very, very common theme. Reduce the price of the old content to reduce the price barrier for newer players.

What they are doing is forcing older players to buy a "bundle" as if they  were new players that never paid for the core game or if you like better they are not offering to let old player to purchase ONLY the expansion without the core game included.

Again $45 for the expansion, that is only for the expansion, The $15 discount is what the core game will be "worth" when Horizons is released. It's not hard.

As for WoW I never played that rip off.

You can't just buy the expansion, they are essentially selling a bundle which includes the expansion and  the core game.

That's my whole point and gripe.  You can try and justify it with core game devaluation etc etc bla bla but look in the store it's a fact horizons is the core game plus the expansion.

If you don't have the game at all you can make a new account buy it and get the core game plus the expansion if you have the game already you buy horizons but they take away the core game even though you are paying for it again.

    It's a rip off.

I am a fan of the game too but lets call it what is it.

ELITE is one of those games where development does not end when the box is shipped. Its like MMO in that respect.

Now if you continue developing you need to pay the programmers. MMO have Subscription for this reason (or go F2P)

ELITE developers said they do not want subscription. Instead they will do old GW1 idea, to pay the development trough (optional) expansions. (that is also fully optional)

This is why they need to charge some money for expansion. Look at it more as 1 year subscription , if you will

I loved Gw1 and have the set. I have no problem paying for an expansion...my problem is unlike gw1 they are not selling just an expansion.

With guild wars if I want to buy just war of the north I can do so they don't force me to buy the previous expansions ED on the other hand are doing just that.  They are forcing me to buy the core game aswell as the expansion.

Dunno what is hard to understand about it?

If say GW has a bundle deal and I buy GW and War of the north but already have GW I can then make a new account for the core game  yet apply War of the north to my main account...  this method I have some fringe benefits to have bought the main game twice extra storage etc etc

....not so with ED if I already own the core game I can either apply the purchase to a new account and then wait for release to play it or apply it to my existing account but lose out on on the ability to create a new account and thus be able to have a new CMDR.....with this method I get ripped off as they take away the core game I just repurchased away from me thus no fringe benefits due to having two accounts
