I think it's a possibility at some point, as a F2P game most likely on consoles and PC. But I expect we're going to get at least one more expansion first.

Hmm, depends on your definition. Yes if you think Marvel Heroes is, Path of Exile, etc. Devilian will certainly be one of the first here in the states.

I could get hyped over a Diablo MMO. Warcraft has had it's time to shine but there is no reason Blizzard can't turn there talent for MMOs to one of their other IPs.
I'm never going to get the Starcraft MMO I've dreamed about for years though am I?

I think at this point, we've all had that dream and keep hoping it'll come true. But I'm not holding my breath.

Games like LoL, Dota, Heearthstone are proving that game companies can make a lot of money by making shiny but simple games. Millions and millions are playing those games and buying stuff from cash shops. Now, compare that to the huge investment that an MMORPG requires. I would not hold my breath.
Imo, if they make some kind of MMO from Diablo, it is likely to be something more like Mobas and less like WoW.

I guess I mean, a game with combat like D3, ect. But with players like WoW. I guess the closest thing to it would be PoE, even though you can really only fit a few players in a party. And you see a few in town, but that isn't really an MMO imo.

Unless they can invent new genres or are going into the mobile market Blizzard is quickly running out of cheep games that can rake in millions.
If they plan on releasing a Diablo MMO in 2020 now is the perfect time to start working on it so the rumors make sense to me. The next Diablo 3 expansion should be well underway so it doesn't fit that well, could be for Diablo 4 though.
Anything is certainly possible and when Blizzard finally would get it out Wow will be a really small niche game not competing with it.
I sadly think it is pretty unlikely though, a Diablo RTS like Warcraft (without "World of...") would be far more probable. If Blizzard make a new MMO to be released somewhere 2020-2025 my bet still would be Wow 2. World of Diablo would surely sell a few million copies no matter how bad it would be but Wow 2 would sell at least 10 million copies just on the name and Blizzard do love sequels.
Activision could put $100M+ on a World of Diablo but it still seems rather worse than Wow 2 income wise and Activision do love money.

its unlikely to happen anytime soon due to technical limitations.

TERA and Skyforge could be called that as well. Heck, DCU and GW2 have been called the same thing on and off. Exactly defining a MMO is pretty hard unless it is turned based like Atlantica.
It is hard enough to say whats a themempark and sandbox game today, I kinda see it like a slider with Minecraft in the further most sandbox place and Dungeon siege in the most themepark one. MMOs tend to be a bit closer to DS then MC but there are of course exceptions.

Lineage was a game with combat not unlike Diablo and it was made in 2000 so I don't really see those technical limitations. The problem is more to make it fun, Diablos combat tend to be about being swarmed by mobs without much group dynamics while drinking pots with a speed that would shock the town drunk.
I don't think you could pull off a MMO with exactly the same mechanics as Diablo (any of the 3), you need to add a bit of group dynamics into it as well. You also need a pretty large world, probably with instanced dungeons. But there is no technical reasons you can't do that, you just need to figure out how you make the group playing more fun.
Marvel Heroes is IMO the best option out there. Of course, developed and managed by the creator of Diablo, Devid Brevik. Hell its even more fun than Diablo 3 for me.
Path of Exile is another good option, but is heavily instanced and doesnt compare with MH IMO.
with the recent news on diablo 3 - do you guys think its stupid to dream about an mmo ?
cheers! /M
Stupid? No. I've been thinking about it since playing WoW and seeing what Blizzard did with an RTS IP, turning it into one of my favorite MMORPGs and games of all time. I can only wish and hope they would do it for the rest of their awesome games, Diablo and Starcraft. Nothing wrong with wanting that, just like I love the FF series and FFXI(we won't mention FFXIV as I think that's part of the newer post FFXI games and misses the magic and depth of FF).
Think of all the possibilities from crafting to classes to locations to story to PVP!!!, ah my brain is about to explode!

A solid copy of Diablo3, but in MMORPG format. Supposed to release globally sometime this year, but I have my doubts about its proposed release.
