Final fantasy 11 back before abbysea expsnions trivlized most of the game. It was the only "mmorpg" that felt like an actual mmo, leveling was slow, you needed to be social and depend on people to party with to level. Unlike mmorpgs today where they are bascally a single player game with a glorified irc chat room, where your rushed to max lv. A close second would be dark age of camelot.
I've personally pretty much given up on the mmorpg genre as a whole, since all that seems to be made anymore is wow clone after wow clone. No one tries to go back to the old school ways where your required to have a party even to level. Sure you can party in alot of mmorpgs, but for most of the leveling process its pointless if not outright penalizies you for doing it.
How is lineage 2 these days I wonder.

It changes. What I was looking for in a game 20 years ago is different than 10 years ago and different than today. I have fond memories of many games WoW, TSW, DF, and a few others. When I get into a new game, it becomes my new favorite.
I think if I had to say what game I had the most fun in, I absolutely loved the community and really kind of wish I hadn't stopped playing when WoW came out it is probably, "Horizons: Empire of Istaria", loved my time in that game and the Dragon Rites of Passage stuff was some of the most fun I have had in any game ever.
Asherons Call...............glad to see it get so many votes. I was completely engaged through at least the first 2-3 years although I played much longer. It was so entertaining I never even tried the original Everquest. ((wish Turbine would take a stab at modernizing in the spirit of the original.grrrrr))
Wow Vanilla and beyond a lot of fun and much more modern graphically, especially as a jump from AC. The instances were so well done in early wow and the community was a lot of fun way back then.........seriously! -smirk-
I'd have to say the best overall MMORPG I have played is EvE Online. Other standouts: SWG, COH, LotRO, FE, TSW each of these had some element that really stood out. I'd also have to include AoC (for the first 20 levels) and STO for capturing the Star Trek feel. Pirates of the Burning Sea, for the best ship-to-ship combat and port battles.
Played: E&B, SWG, Eve, WoW, COH, WAR, POTBS, AOC, LOTRO, AUTO.A, AO, FE, TR, WWII, MWO, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, NWO, WoP, RUST, LIF, SOA, MORTAL, DFUW, AA, TF, PFO, ALBO, and many many others....
What year did you start playing MMORPGs? Why was this game the best for you? If you're not playing it now, why did you leave it?
My first MMORPG was WoW back in 2007. The best game I've ever played, in spite of its ,many flaws, was Darkfall (the original, not DFUW). I started playing that from late 2008 till they wiped all my accounts.
Morrowind is my favorite game of all time. Darkfall came the closest for me, to replicating that type of feel. But it was online and the combat was much better. The world was huge. There was a real feeling of adventure and excitement that I have never experienced in any other game.
Yes, there were cheaters and the company that ran the game never seemed to execute the full potential of what that game could have been. People wanted more sandbox elements and they gave us funhulks (for those who played, you know what I'm talking about). And there was the Darkfall 2010 that never came. In spite of that and all the game's other flaws, this was still my personal favorite of all time.
Still waiting for the next one.
Darkfall online(All of us that played it know when talking about Darkfall it is DFO has the apprasial; Uw is a piece of shit) is the best mmo ive played to date as well.
The huge world and the immersion you get(despite mobs spawning when near them), best combat ive played in an mmo, full loot, community with meaningful politics, clans/players owning their own hamlets/cities, skilling anything you wanted(granted the game needed a skillcap imho), the race wars and community involved around them.
Sure the game had massive flaws, like hardly any sandbox features, insane grind, hackers(early on), terrible elitist community for newbs, solely focus on pvp and everything else to suplement it and the worse of all Aventurine and Tasos. Ruined their game into the ground.
Anyone that can stomach the type of game DFO is will always admit it was one of a kind and more like SWG/UO than most modern games and could have took the throne as the best sandbox mmo if they actually added the content and fixed the flaws.
Runescape comes 2nd since I really didn't experience SWG/UO in their glory days. 3rd Planetside 1 4rd is AOC 5th APB 6th DCUO
Runescape. People tend to trash talk about the game but I'd like to give credit where credit's due. Many of today's generation of MMO gamers started off from Runescape. The game, in its own rights, was a decent one. It had offered me some unique experiences I've never quite found in any other MMO. The f2p/p2p system was more than reasonable and the content was diversified enough to keep you hooked. But that's more than a decade ago, every MMO I've tried since has disappointed me in some ways.

I absolutely agree with everything you said about DFO.
Old I am, their was no net, I was their when we got text. I was their when we got colored text !, I was their when we got a beep sound. I was their when we got little stick men lol, Then a Pic !!!.
Star Wars Galaxies was the most engaging mmo we have ever played.
Best crafting system you would have to ride the plannets and scan to find a random area to put down a harvester 9 plannets. Best class we had 40 classes and could max and use 2.5 of them at a time. Unlocking Jedi was super hard but a jedi could kill 10-20 normal players and had perma death and they were hunted by bounty hunters 24 7 anywhere but inside your house. They girls and guys could play a totally non combat class and be master dancers or musicians and make us songs and dances that would buff players for almost 4 hours. Crafters could and did make most everything. Best housing you could move anything anywhere like make a fish tank anything you could dream up. Couples would rent our house to get married in. And then Sony killed the game with decisions so bad what they did are taught in game design schools as a what not to do.
Sadly, I started SWG (free trial) exactly one week before its closure was announced. I liked the trial a lot, as dated as the game was and as changed.
Ouch! Well, at least you got a chance to try it, even if it was for just a few days.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
First MMO I ever played was SWG. My favorite because of the immersion at the time was the original Guild Wars. Right now I have gone back again to The Secret World again since there is nothing new out there that peaks my interest in any way. Honorable mention to Star Wars Old Republic, Final Fantasy 14, and Guild Wars 2, fun games and good times I've had and continue to have with them. I have a rotation going that includes these games. Haven't played anything new MMO wise that has entertained or immersed me for a few years now.
It was Darkages(Nexon) for me, during my stay around 1999-2002.
Player ran community system like religion and faith, guard enforcement(police) etc. Harsh elemental attribute system, but rewarding gameplay; you could even buff monsters using either priest(stats buff, random element buff etc) or wizard(element amplification) and watch unknowing players fight to their doom. Death meant losing all perishable equipment and dropping your body pile to the ground, along with getting a detrimental scar that reduces the amount of health gained upon leveling. The scar can only be removed by a certain faith. No hand holding; leveling, area/zone secrets and quests were hard to find. Even so, people shared info back then without any sort of wiki. Stat distribution actually meant something; affects skills/spells learned and also impact on health and mana gained as you level.
That is a very hard question. I want to mention only 5 games. Oh boy...
2003 - Knight Online. If you born and raised in Turkey. This is the MMO you grow up and spent your times at internet cafes or late nights when your parent are sleeping. Farm some gold, grind xp all night every night, before sleep open your personal merchant and leaving it untill morning. Yeah it was pretty fun to play. After then they realesed Fire Drake patch (1299) which killed the game and path they followed. So I moved on other MMO's. I believe they do sell in game stuff with credit card, also everybody is cheating in the game. But the community still keep the game alive.
Also some of my friends used to play Lineage 2 A LOT!!! I never played it untill it became f2p dont know just didnt want to pay a game not better than WoW.
2005 - Maple Story. Before they seperate the international servers. It was a lot of fun. Cuddly and nice graphics. Like everything, year by year people found a lot of bugs to level up faster and so silly billy things. I dont even know what is the state of the game now. But yes I had a lot of fun.
2006 - World of Warcraft. I fall in love when I did the quest line first time. It was like "WTF!" moment to me. Someone actually did a game with amazing features. To me it was everything I expected from a MMORPG. Year 2015 still time by time I play the game.
2008 - League of Legends. I was hanging on the MMORPG.com since around 2007-8 but never registered myself. And there was a lot of HYPE about LoL. So finally I found a key and play some. I really enjoyed it. Even now, still one of my favourite of all the time.
2013 - Elder Scrolls Online. I love the series. I played every single one of them thru series. Begining of the beta was a disaster. It did crushed my dreams, but hey! We all know FFIV... Teso is extremely laid back. Amazing community. You cant even compare with GW2. I own both games and playing time by time. If you cant choose between teso and gw2 go with TESO. Without the doubt.
Also there are some games should be mentioned. Cabal Online (When it wasnt F2P), Diablo III (I know its not a MMO but makes you feel like you are in a mmo scheme), Path Of Exile, Rohan Online, Trove and Vindictus. Okay forget that one; Ether Saga. AND yes I played only 1 game from PWE. I wont and never ever will play any games from them.
This and Anarchy Online before that crappy Shadowlands xpack were the most fun i ever had playing mmo's. When i think of these two games i wonder why i bother playing whats out there now. Whats turning me off from mmo's is mostly the player bases in them now. I feel like i'm playing with a bunch of 16 year old's.

EQ was my first MMO right at launch. I consider it a very close second.
