Did it really need a new one? Also, would the game's unique character animations be portable to a new engine or would it get dropped to maintain performance?

I say vanguard, really enjoyed the atmosphere, but it was just so empty of people. Bring Vanguard back with enough advertisement to get people to actually know what it is and actually play it.
Seriously I brought it up at work a few times while it was ftp and no one ever heard of it, and they play mmo's to...

I think the graphics look fine. They were 2D/3D combo setup. You should google the game.
Seems like the engine is the thing people want to change most. I guess that makes sense since so many MMOs have crap engines.
When Vanguard came out, computers had 1-4 Gigs of memory and top video cards were things like the GeForce 8800 with about a half a gig of RAM.
It's entirely possible that modern CPUs and GPUs combined with the additional memory of today's computers would provide the processing power and the caching space necessary to eliminate Vanguard's primary graphics problem - chunking when crossing zone tiles.

I'm thinking EvE quality graphics.
I don't need to google it. I played it. I still curse EA for killing it.

Very familiar with both the game and the engine. The part of the graphics I was addressing was character animation by dynamic chat parser.

I don't think so, I played it before it closed down on my 3.2 ghz hexacore (liquid cooled and clocked) with a 480 GTX graphics card (sadly I changed to a 780 GTX a short while after so I didn't get that boost), 4 raided Intel X-80 SSDs, win 7 and 8 gigs of ram. The hiccups were less but still there and the game still were kinda buggy.
I don't think even my new Haswell-E computer with 16 gig of DDR4 would have stopped the hiccups, the engine just wasn't good enough. And there were a lot more issues at launch like floating avatars and bugs everywhere, if VG would have released in the shape it got to at closing the game would still be up.
Vanguard - with a studio behind it that actually gave it support. Instead of buying it when it was in trouble, and then putting it on a shelf and letting it rot.
I'd bring back CoH, and if I did, I'd un-nerf the PvP changes Cryptic made before they left.

DAOC and my one change would be all the best bits from Vanguard.

Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile
If I want a world in which people can purchase success and power with cash, I'll play Real Life. Keep Virtual Worlds Virtual!
It was a great premise for a game but failed execution
I would bring back Star Wars Galaxies like everyone else said pre CU
Does Runescape Classic count? It is considered a different game...
