Of course the list is opinion. Determination of the "greatest" anything is pretty much by definition opinion. They're trying to look at the level of innovation, and what new things each game brought to the genre. This is going to generate a different type of list than simply what everyone's favorite MMO's are. Will have to wait for the top 15 before being able to say whether I agree with the whole list, but it seems pretty good to me so far.
For the remaining 15, I pretty much agree with Iselin. Maybe trading GW1 for GW2, World of Tanks (may not really qualify as an MMO, but definitely influential) for ESO, and FFXI for EQ2.
Strange list. Should be clearer that those are just some individual opinions than a serious attempt to make a real list.
Wildstar?!?!
AO was one of the first great mmorpgs, only 18? One place infront of .... Wildstar?!?!?! Thats just bullsh..
A lot of things are very subjective
Wildstar at 19 is completely wrong and makes me go hmmn. Obviously some younger people got their say on that one. It truly doesn't belong in the greatest category. Seriously it couldn't even sustain a subscription model and is probably going to fail at the free to play model as well. Tera at 25 was weird to me since it has the most engaging combat system, and should be 19 all day over Wildstar. The rest of the list is OK and I could somewhat live with.
Huh? You talk about a game that you perceive as appealing to a younger audience that failed as P2P and then bring up a game that has an even greater perceived appeal to a younger audience and also failed as p2p.
Tera is probably a few spots higher than it should be as it is. Its combat is fun in short doses, but its awful in every other aspect besides visuals, which is highly subjective especially in a game with Tera's art style. Wildstar is certainly a more complete package, but neither is a good MMORPG.

games that have successful p2p models of all time
WoW,
FFXIV,
EVE.
Wow, Wildstar is such garbage hmm?
Wildstar is incredible, I have played many big name mmos of all time and Wildstar is in my top 5.
Darkfall deserves to be there. Sure it was buggy, sure it was a mess, but I'd be lying if I didn't say it was a complete blast for the time it was around.
I'm surprised Runescape isn't in the top 10.
For sure.
That one ranks #2 on my short list of MMOs that I thoroughly enjoyed. I'd still be subbed if the server was up; hell of an experience that I'll never forget.

It will be there. Although we are already past the point of where it should have been. The question is will Trove and ArcheAge? Its pretty hard to justify AA a top 15 slot, but can't imagine MMORPG not putting on the list of 35.

How the hell do you make a REAL list? Of course they are opinions, every list is going to be the opinion of who made the list.
I can take 3 groups pf 150 players each and you will have 3 different lists and orders that no one here will agree to as real lists or at the very least suspect at trying to bribe advertisement dollars.

I'm not sure what you mean. This column is an 'opinion' column. It doesn't need to state that it's an opinion. As for a 'real' list, you would have to determine your metric and stick with it. I suppose you could use total money earned or most users, but it's very hard to pin down a best MMO using static statistics like that.
What a useless article. Complete opinion and conjecture. Also, someone stated previously that it's much easier to list the few good MMO's rather than the plethora of bad to horrible ones.
Out of this list so far, I've only seen a couple that I thought were worth playing. Maybe in the next stretch...
But yeah, with no criteria other than opinion, this article is pure filler and not worth more than scanning to see the titles so you can shrug at it.
Wildstar 19? Above swtor? Swg will be above swtor haha Swg doesn't even deserve to be on the list. It's the most overhyped after death game in the history of MMOROGS.
I too agree Lotro is wrongly placed. I played a good many mmo's and I personally feel it should be in the top 10
All I can think of that this site's staff must not have played it, especially when it first released pre Moria. There was a lot of innovation and some very good ideas there:
Fellowship maneuvers were unique group combos that were extremely well done... the burglar class initiating them was just icing on the cake for a very good class. Loremasters who could bring it from a distance or melee effectively with staff and sword. Great Minstrel healer class. Story chapters that were not just solo and mixed in a lot of very good group play.
It's definitely top 10.

Wildstar higher up is nothing more than a pat on the back to Bill who overhyped that game and its artistic look from the beginning and is now sobbing over how horrible it ended up to be.
To be fair, he strikes out every time he climbs up on the barstool to pitch some hype.
He has a terrible track record.
But then...can you name one writer covering MMOs who doesn't?
I think this article would have been better tolerated if you had used the title "Top 35 MMO's that didn't make you want to kill the cat and beat up your neighbor". It would have given us all a more palatable context than "Best". Let's face it...the last 15 years has had some profoundly bad releases. But...the occasional gem did emerge...so here we are.
But one man's gem is another's turd Popsicle...though having the likes of Wild Star and Tera strains credibility a bit...

You do realize this list is the result of many people and not just Bill right?

Think about what you just said about SWG and than come back to us with a statement that actually makes sense. If the game sucked as bad as you THINK it did, than why is it one of the only MMO's that gets talked about as often as it does years after it's demise? If it truly sucked, don't you think it wouldn't get referred to so much by so many?
By that logic WoW is the greatest game every by how much people talk about it.

I dunno, somehow I think it will be in the top 3 but not number 1.

By that logic WoW is the greatest game every by how much people talk about it.
DAOC in the top 5 because it was the first PVP centered MMORPG and still arguably the best MMORPG PVP experience (in its heyday) to date.
EQ/UO will surely make top 5 due to their reputation for being the sort of genre creators.
That does leave one spot in the top 5 for the big Blizzard elephant in the room.
