Curious how free the game is with this transition. I tried out the SWTOR free to play, and quite enjoyed the game, but once I reached end game the raid content and pvp were too restricted for free to play. Curious how wildstar compares. Is any portion of the crafting locked behind a pay wall? Or equip able gear?

They do have some limits imposed on certain things. For example, you can join guilds and circles, but you are not able to create them yourself. And you are limited to how many postings you have on the commodities exchange and auction house. Of course you can expand these and any other limits through purchases in the cash shop.

Playing free is pretty much the same experience as it was, and now there's the option too for the impatient ones for getting "more", in xp or rest xp gain, in gathering and crafting, in cosmetics and titles. It's just convenience, since without them you'll have the same speed everyone had back in the p2p days.
Not to mention, you can get the boons for free, just by playing the game. But, you can get them right away, for some money - I think in the beginning that's how they plan to monetize, on the convenient or impatient folks. For later, I guess we'll see where it goes, when the first bigger game update arrives
Full social access is the second bracket in Cosmic rewards, every former player have that by default, plus everyone who buys a box*, have 1 month sub, buy something from the store, or (for the fully free players) the first time s/he gets a CREDD from the game's exchange.
*ed: not lockbox, I mean game box you still can find a few in stores for a couple bucks, it's a nice deal because unlocks a lot of convenience stuff, gets you some cometics and mounts, and also 1 month sub which is the most useful at leveling, due to the added gain rates.
See Po_og's answer.
I would add that having they were not "making money" before the change. Not enough money to recoup the $X over 7 years that NCSoft spent + whatever they paid to buy Carbine and there two years of effort. So they have rolled the dice; spent a little more hoping to at least get something back. Might not work but the extra spend is small compared to what they have already invested.
Its just another generic cash shop, based on the fact people get urges to get better stuff, and you can do that with the cash shop. It is not direct, where you give them money they give you a super weapon, but it is close, with the crafting system.
The guy above me mentions SWTOR, it is basically like that but worse. Yeah they wont charge you for hot bars, and hiding your helmet. They 100 percent have swtor gambling boxes, items in there that will make you seriously more powerful then other people, with the crafting rune system, which swtor doesnt have. You can buy everything in the game with real money, just like swtor.
So here is the difference. A ftp person would take years to get everything, a pay player could get it all within a couple of weeks.
As for new content they plan on charging for DLC, and new expansions.

As far as not caring about other players, well that is why its a mmo. If your just gonna ignore every one around you, it is a terrible single player game.
The only thing I can say is I dont role like that. If some one has something rare, I want to know they earned it playing the game. In these MMOs, it has nothing to do with that, it has to do with who spent the most money.
As far as your theory about not caring, it just doesn't work that way at all. Maybe like 1 percent of the world, actually goes by that way of thinking, not comparing what your neighbor has. It esp doesnt work in online games. That is why they make so much money.
Bobby, is running a 5 man group, with another class the same as him. He is doing 80 percent less dmg, than another player in the group. Bobby asks what is going on, and the other player says well, if you want to be like this, you gotta buy a bunch of stuff from the cash shop, or play 12 hours a day for a month.
What ever as I said though, you enjoy your credit card battles, credit card warrior. I will stick with games that have servers I control, so I don't get any fools who think its ok to donate/buy 1000s of dollars worth of stuff, and think that is fun. Where every one who has something earned it by playing the game, not by their pay pal buyers credit rating.
its not that i ignore other players, i just dont get jealous cus they have something i dont. i group and play with others all the time. but if so and so spent money to get something then good for him. honestly, its good for you too. he spends money so the company gets money so you can play free of charge. see how that works?
im an adult with a job so i make money therefore i spend my money my way. i dont have a porche, i have a nissan. im not gonna cry cus porche man gets to work faster than me. i will eventually get there and spend less money gas wise.
its all about playing the game and having fun. not who can do it first or better. thats why games are goin to hell. people forgot why games were made in the first place. entertainment.
Have not heard of arma 3 epoch.
