Get out before the stock takes a nose dive.  I can't see any other reason to cash in now, unless they expect the price of stocks to take a tumble.

To be quite honest I never saw any similarities or joint ventures between the two. If I hadn't read this article I would have never known Nexon partly owned them. Maybe that's why they sold their shares. Also seeing that they were funding their competitor it must have made more sense to just let them go. You could be right, but there are a lot of other reasons they could be dumping the stock. They could be selling to obtain cash to invest in something else. Of course, the more likely reason is they want the cash to offset mediocre performance in general. The article at MMOculture mention the 63 million yen that will be gained from the sell of the NCSoft shares, but the article does not mention that Nexon disclosed this would only result in a gain of 6.2 million yen. If I owned Nexon stock, I wouldn't by the end of today.

Doubtful; Nexon probably decided to use the money tied up in NCSoft for something else.

The impression one got was that the "significant synergies" Nexon reference was the merger of the two companies - under Nexon's leadership. Synergies: management / organisational / locational and even product streamlining with better leverage when purchasing / distributing stuff etc.

With, again the impression one got, NCSoft resisting Nexon's overtures their options were limited: hostile takeover; silent partner; walk away. They have chosen the latter option and will now seek a higher return elsewhere, maybe funding other games or whatever.

Seems most of you don't realize that NCsoft is a Korean company. They used to be the blizzard of Korea, now they are being choked out by tencent. Company is dying, guild wars alone can't keep it afloat.

Nexon didn't "own" NCSoft they "simply" owned the largest block of stock.

ArenaNet broke away from NCSoft already also, so they couldn't even take part in the stock increase from those sales anyways.

Edit: Guess I was wrong. I hate when people start a sentence like they are Dwight from The Office.

False. ANet is still a subsidiary of NCSoft. What they did is, they took the helm of publishing in the west since NCWest is being discontinued. So they are self-published here in the West. ANet will need a lot more money than they currently have to buy themselves out of NCSoft :)

Still not sure what this means for Lineage 2 since it's a game developed by NCSoft and was being actively published by NCWest for all these years. Would suck to see this game gone. I've spent over 8 years of my life on it. Moved on 3 years ago, when Gw2 launched.

They are still owned by NC Soft, they just got to handle themselves and the other western games since they actually know how to get profit.

Anyways, getting rid of Nexon is a good thing unless someone actually worse bought the shares. If NC soft bought them themselves it would be a sign they believe a lot of cash is comming in soon.

That Nexon sold it is probably a sign that their hostile takeover didn't work and they focusing on something else.

But this have very little to do with ANET. If NC soft actually went down it would, they would have to sell ANET to someone (possibly ANET themselves but EA and Activision surely wouldn't mind buying it) but I don't see them closing down a studio that actually earns money. Carbine would be in even worse problems then it already is though.

And I don't think that the new Lineage game can be much other than a success is South Korea...

Makes you wonder what Nexon thought of the GW2 expansion. BTW, the link above is broken...something about not allowing hotlinks. So I didn't actually read the whole article.

Depends, if someone gave them a good offer or if they thought it was best to get out of NC soft fast.

NC Soft have been rather worried that they would do a hostile takeover so maybe they just forked out enough money to get rid of them.

I feel though that this have far more to do with the upcomming Lineage game than GW2, if that is a success it will be huge but if it fails NC Soft will be in a rather bad place. GW2: HOT could never affect the company that much no matter if it totally flopped or sold 10 million copies.

Lineage is NC softs core IP and the first game still earns a lot of money, not as much as Wow but it is the second largest P2P game with something just over 3 million subs (source: Wikipedia but it was talked about here as well not long ago) and it have plenty of fans in South Korea. If the new Lineage game would become a hit it would earn more money than Wow (at least nowadays) and that is a huge deal. No B2P MMO can compete with that.

Another possibility is that NCSoft established a "poison pill" strategy to prevent Nexon from taking over. NCSoft's business model for GW has been well-received by both the players and industry. A lot of subscription-based systems have gone to GW's model after losing subs. I think that within a few years, that WoW might actually follow.

You are still thinking too much as a westerner here, ANET is just a part of NC softs profits, something like 20% or so (no, far from an exact number give or take 5%). If you want to figure out what is going on you need to look on S Korea and not the West.

I think @MisterZebub is on the right track.

That would be the best outcome of all the possibilities.

Gw2 preorder early sales indicates low sales potential and poor return on investment, this baby will be pay to win real quick.

Could be an indicator of many things, but what it is not is a weakness inside NCSoft. Selling your entire position off based on information they may have gained over their relationship or industry knowledge would be insider trading and against so many laws. My feeling is they needed liquidity quickly to keep one of their own development projects alive.
