I have watched numerous videos and read as many reviews but still lost on what this game is all about.
Is it a MMO... having missions, exploration, open PVP zones, crafting?
What can and can not do in the game now?
Will there be a character wipe before finial release?
the sword of no sword...

In theory SC should to be awesome game but hard to get that goal !
If you are interested in making a MMO maybe visit my page to get a free open source engine.
The game as it stands, is far, far from being complete. Somewhere in the next year if they keep to schedule, they'll release the single player component which is supposed to play like the old Wing Commander games, called Squadron 42. At some point in the future after that (Time frame currently unknown), they will start making the actual MMO aspects.
As it stands, your best bet if you want to play something now is to...wait, until something more concrete is out, and the game actually releases. As for at least over a year, there will be no missions, exploration, PvP, crafting, or any of that, outside of the Single Player game.
the sword of no sword...
I haven't contributed so I haven't played what's available, but the game will have two components. A single player component and a multiplayer component. They both take place in a huge open universe that contains missions (look up the wing commander series of games) based on free flight, trading, real time transitions to FPS combat, ship customizations, set universe planet exploration and much more. There is also a multiplayer persistent universe that offers the same.
I personally am not going to purchase the game until its finished. Today you wouldn't have much to do, but the next major alpha release brings all the modules together into a complete game for testing, still too early for me. I want to play the game in its finished state not as separate pieces.
Ignore the trolls, they are just part of a bored "mob" that doesn't understand how long it takes to make a game and think 92 million dollars is allot of money for a AAA game of this scope (its not, its below average) And I hear hate trains are all the rage for kids these days.
If your looking for a completed game to play wait, if you want to contribute to the development spend.
SC is about selling ships that don't exist, for a game that doesn't exist (in coherent form) to people that don't know any better.
I donno, looks like they should have something more for the amount of money they have raised based on what they have said based on this chart
1: The game will have 2 parts. The first part is named "Squadron 42" which is a Wingcommander esque single player/co-op game leading to the "Persistent Universe" upon completion of Squadron 42 (although you may skip SQ42).
2: In the "Persistent Universe" you play as in MMO, missions, PvP zones, crafting, multi-crew space ships, exploration of space as well as planets and space stations, FPs where players may pvp in squads for control of stations or ships.
3: Right now you can test space flight solo/racing/single player combat against AI/co-op/PVP deathmatches. You have a hangar to change loadouts on different ships. You may now travel to a space port, check it out and congragate with other players
4: Character wipe? Right now the only things I've accrued I've paid for so no. As of writing this my character has no reputation or xp, a proper character creator doesn't exist right now so there's no need to worry. Besides your skill in combat wether in space or on the ground relys on your twitch ability and knowledge of ship handling, not some xp bar + mindless button mashing.

the other is ...we will see I guess.
Whoever wrote that doesn't even know the Kickstarter + payment processing free, it's 5$ for a 60$ purchase:

It will use cutscenes to load in and out of ships and will have mission based game play.I believe Squadron 42 is all mission based but i could be wrong.I actually had to look because i forget easy, yes it is a single player game mode.
Also as i suspected it will be maybe a month of game play then all you do the rest of the game is sit in that cockpit or admire your ship/s in your hangar.I also ma quite sure there will be tons of ship add ons to support the cash shop,an idea i would not support ever.
IMO this whole game is a cash shop nightmare.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
One aspect not shown in a chart like that is accountability and push from an investor, they would not stand for incompetence or slack effort because it is their money. Also if you cannot perform up to the investors expectations you likely never get them on board again,so there is a lot more pressure to perform, where as with this system, you can slack off goof off and just travel around a lot.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
It also explains why the "Direct PC model" looks so good. It's always possible to make a statistic that makes you look good when you're allowed to pull numbers out of your ass.
Is it a MMO.
Officially no. Part 1 is a solo campaign (Squadron 42). Part 2 (Persistent Universe) is multiplayer instanced (so you meet others, but not 2000 in the same place at the same time).
.. having missions,
Yes
exploration,
Yes
open PVP zones,
Almost yes (with PvP/PvE slider fully on PvP side and out in the pirate system its more or less an open PvP zone). If you stay in the heavily policed inner systems with the slider fully on the PvE side being forced into a PvP encounter will be very rare and stacked in favour of the defender as the police will help.
crafting?
Yes
What can and can not do in the game now?
Ship Dogfighting with single seat ships , PvE, PvP, Co-op PvE
Ship Racing
Some moving around with the avatar in a landing zone (which players changed into vehicle crashcar races ;-)
Will there be a character wipe before finial release?
unknown yet, but all skill is based on YOUR skill, there are no character levels or skill levels that could be re-set, there is no XP bar
Have fun
As a bonus, you'll get a chance to "contribute" to the "cause" ("My life for you ™)
You've got it all wrong, they are spending the same amount on Development as a Traditional PC model, there rest of those charges to into the pocket of CR Industries Inc.

Don't worry though, once the poop hits the fan and they wind up with their asses in court (this WILL happen) to explain where all the money went I'm sure the will be some other games looking to hire professional forum posters.
By all means the OP should follow the game in hopes that it will actually see the light of day. Definitely DO NOT give them a dime until then.
Have even more fun!
What that good man forgot to mention is the hot new trend in such a form of gaming where players imagine ramming the nose of their ships into the cockpits of others' ships in an activity fondly called Ship-humping.
And for the hardcore make-beliefers there is the more harcore variation of Ship-humping called Auto-destruct Ship-humping, which involves the use of jumper cables and a vat of crude oil.
In case you arent a big fan of mBSdaing (pronounced CR-esa-kookoo-pro-jekt-man-ager), I would advise you to hold onto your money and purchase the game once its complete and when you can ask for actual reviews of an actual game OP.
