Download the client and login today for free. With restricitons By removing the "lvl 20 characters only" free mode and buffing the cash shop they are f2p.
Of course they will double dip with a "freemium" optional sub + cash shop.
No that is not free to play, that is trial, read description in battle.net account management page.
On to topic : it seems like with legion they are more hellbent on squeezing people for every $ they have, so i don't see them going free to play or even buy to play unless they lose about 3 more million subscribers by q1 2016, which will not happen, already world of warcraft official forums are hyped with "legion fever", don't think they will unsubscribe.

Why on earth would it go F2P when they still got over 5mil strong Subs? If the game had like 100K subs, sure go F2P. But 5 million people willing to pay to play WoW is a no brainer. Could they drop the Sub fee by 2-3$ a month? Sure they can if they know it will bring back a few million more subs. WoW is a loooooooong way from dead, it's barely hitting puberty.
5 million subscription paying what is $14.99 or $19.99 a month is an average of $100 millions a month, darn that is pocket change?
Sigh. Read the financial reports. AB say how much WoW made from all sources: subs, box sales, cash shop, royalties. Royalties mainly come about because people in e.g. China and Malaysai pay AB nothing; $0; not an electronic sausage. They pay the company that operates the game x and that company then pays AB. And depending on the business model people in those countries may not buy the expansion either.
So check out the financial results. Clue: it isn't $100M a month.
Now WoW could be considered to be "doing fine". If Activision Blizzard decide that they could make more money by changing something - a deal like they did with Diablo, going b2p, reducing the sub .... whatever then they will do it. They will take a view. And change if they see a big enough gain. They could be making $200M a month but if they see the possibility of $400M for long enough it will be off to the races.
