MMORPG Chat under seige, whats going to change?

fistormfistorm Member UncommonPosts: 868
So all day have been watching the news and they are blaming mmo chat for helping communications of terrorists and an outcry to police them.  What will that look like and how will that change our gaming experiences in guild chat?  Will our private jokes in guild chat now start landing gamers in jail?  It reminds me of that teen who joked out a shooting threat on facebook an found himself in jail over 9 months in a texas jail.

Every day more an more video games are being demonized, with calls for even trollers to be jailed. How will this policing of our gaming chat be used against guild chat instead of actual terrorists?  Where does whole thing end?

Honestly, your average gamer isn't going to notice any of the potential changes coming down the road here. All forms of social media are heavily monitored for terrorist activity and your average user doesn't even notice. I'm almost certain that online interactions in games are probably already monitored, if not in all games, I am sure some.

The problem with the news is that it's not about reporting facts from an objective viewpoint anymore. It's about over-dramatizing non-issues in order to drive up ratings. They attempted to demonize video games after Columbine too, but not much really came of it. The case the parent's of the victims brought against multiple video games entities ultimately failed.

I'm really surprised by some of things people say on FB and social media sites.

    1) yelling fire in a theater is a crime.  Even if joking.  Putting out a joke about shooting up a school is the same if made in a fashion to incite fear in others.  Grow up and don't do it.

    2) there is not going to be an agent in game chats.  They will probably make game keep keyword searchable chat logs.  Same as they do in other social media.  PS4 is already logging users, but that info is not in a readily searchable form but everything you do on the PS4 is logged due to some pedophile cases and Sony and Microsoft agreed to keep data.  Now you can expect that stuff to be regularly searched by automated systems.

I heard probably over thousands of death threats and sexual harrassment comments in games over the last ten years.  GM's have handeled them all appropriately, should we really have police instead of GM's policing our chats?

Well I personally don't want scumbag terrorists using mmo's to coordinate their plans.  So if the government needs to monitor it then whats the big deal?  If you aren't doing anything wrong then why worry about who reads your email?  People don't need to be joking about killing or shooting people.  If you want to act like a terrorist then start a blog not pollute my favorite games  zone chat.
Are you onto something or just on something?
