"I’d liken its difficulty to old Orr or Southsun when it first launched." What is Southsun like now, I have not bothered with Southsun since it was released. Simply because I used a wp and on arriving, I was already dead. Apparently it had become contested after I started to travel to it. I left and never went back to the area because I saw no point in trying to do the impossible!

Haha I love Pocket Raptors. I don't know why... maybe it's because of the XP.
    They have a fun name.
    They nibble at your heels.
If they kill you while you are looking at the game time to look at your build/stats combo.
The fight last a few seconds and give XP.

They also might remind you of the raptor cave in GW1 Eye of the North. The memories of farming ugly elemental swords and selling them for thousands of plats.

Busy on weeks 5 I wager.

It's not harder than HoT. Probably even easier than Silverwastes.

PS: Just payed a visit to Southsun. Way easier, but I was playing Reaper.

Masteries being a grind is such nonsense. You pick what you want to level and then you play the game.

Playing a game isn't the same as grinding.
And that is not an opinion but a fact.
someone above you defined grinding quite well.  It's doing stuff in a game you don't enjoy to reach the point you want.  If reaching the point isn't worth the grind then you find another game.  GW2 has some nasty grinds in this expansion.

For mastery is doing anything do.
If doing events, exploring, killing mobs is something you don't like to do in GW2, why the heck did you buy HoT?

If you only want the elite specs, you get them straight in sPvP and you can unlock the Hot hero challenges as you gain WvW ranks.

Sounds to me like they probably do want to do those things... once or twice.  Since I don't know the numbers, how many events have to be completed to max out?

No, that was not a good definition of grind.
On Final Fantasy 11 after reaching the max level they "offered" you to keep leveling.
Same old leveling spots with no benefits other than gaining exp and you keep on doing it to get a few extra traits. And that for every single job...

On Gw2 you unlock stuff like 10% faster ressing of people, auto looting (cause it's oh so hard to press the F button to aoe loot...) or that foolish looking apple icon that outs you as noobish wannabe commander.

All these super epic things unlock from just any content you do no matter where and once unlocked they are there for all your characters not just one.

Another approach: I can't tell anymore how many skill points my main had gathered.. maybe 600? it's hard to tell since they were converted to shards and my account has more than 2000 of those.

So I had items worth about 2000 level ups from 3 years of playing - now they add some silly and pointless traits and suddenly this playing gets labeled as grind although nothing changed at all in terms of gameplay.

Because when I was exploring and trying to do nearby events, there was nobody else to do most of them.  and the level design meant that it was sometimes VERY annoying to reach the battle as the waypoint was contested and the level nonlinear.

HoT was designed to be unsoloable and difficult to navigate.  This happened while just trying to do the story, which was not how doing the main story leveling.  And hero points?  Yeah good luck getting people to do them now.

Yesterday I did Auric Basin a couple of times. I do hero points everyday and see people do them everyday (and then join as you get a daily chest). And some of those "unsoloable" champions can be soloed.
