I got FF collector's edition as a birthday present and I'm about to try this game soon. How about buying the expansion? Am I able to play any of the expansion content right from the start from level one? Or should I just buy it later when I have run through the base game? Still healthy population at low to mid levels?

You have to complete all of the ARR story and reach level 50 before starting on any of the new Heavensward content, so there's not really any reason to buy the expac until you've done that. Not that I can recall, at least.

(EDIT: Even playing the new classes requires level 50 and completion of the story through 2.55, unless things have changed.)

Pop is great thruout , never trouble with that because of the jobs system , you dontt need the exp for quite some time .. If you are an average (time spent in game) player ... great game .. take yer time either way and enjoy the ride

yes .. trying to recall( and correct me if i am wrong  folks ) first dungeon is avaible at 15, and just que up easy enough .. I will recomend tho as you get farther along say after 30 .. Take the few minutes to watch the staregy vids that are availble online , Makes the fights very enjoyable ..

IMO wait to buy the xpack,wait at least 2 months,then decide if you still feel like playing.

After having tripped around many a game of late,i feel FFXIV is not only better but by a long shot than everything else that has come out and no i am no longer playing the game myself.

The problem i have is although it is better than other games it still gets boring,i got real bored around level 50 as well i despise the whole ItemLevel design,i think it is nonsense.I also despise repeated isntance gaming like Wow does,Square really messed up their to go for a lower budget design.

However up until about 50 you will enjoy the game i think,i did and i could still enjoy it if the direction was not aimed at repeated instances and ilevels.I will be way happier if FFXI continues to hang around for anotehr few years at least until a real solid triple A game comes around.
