Runescape vs Everquest 2

LuidenLuiden Member RarePosts: 337
I use to be a long time EQ2 player but I haven't played in probably over 3 years now.. this thread isn't about the demise of EQ2, but rather I'm trying to understand the appeal of a game like Runescape vs a game like EQ2.  I haven't played a MMORPG in a long time because to be honest the quality of MMORPGs for years as been flat out terrible.  But when I look around to see if there is anything new I see a wealth of people playing Runescape while EQ2 continues to dwindle down.

So, honest question for people who are familiar with both games.  Why Runescape?  The graphics compare to something like EQ2 aren't even in the same ballpark, what is it about Runescape that has so many people playing and streaming the game?  Is it worth starting to play this game?

Manchildren and children enjoy Runescape. It's been around almost as long as the original EQ and they've been selling the ingame equivalent of crack ever since.

Twice i lasted less than 1 hour in Runescape, would have been good "maybe" 25 years ago,i know in the last 15-20 years i have tons of games i would rather play over Runescape.
To be fair i had to look up what era the game was designed for....2001 that really makes the game look bad,i thought maybe it started in a round 97 or so.

In comparison to my fave mmorpg FFXI,they both really were in beta at around the same time 2001 however i am of no doubt that FFXI was started before Runescape in the development stage.

Runescape was made by two brothers,FFXI a large team, there is no comparison between  the two as RS is /was basically a sprite game.So yeah if it was released about 10 years prior around 1991 then i would say it would have been a pretty good game, but even still i had way more fun playing a single player game Might N Magic released in 1986 so yeah Runescape would have to easily go back 20 years to interest me at all.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I played RuneScape from 2005-2008, then started again in 2011 and still playing. So I've spent quite a lot of time in it, still haven't touched like half of the game...there is so much content in that game that you will never find in any other one. It gets constant (weekly) content updates as well. The graphics were updated as well (still kinda funny, but very far from the original RS Classic sprite graphics), it is a real full screen 3D game now and there will be a huge graphic update in 2016.

The quests are so much fun and very unique, never found anything even near in other games.

It is a sandbox game with a big playerbase, constant updates, big studio as a developer, not expensive - if you can make a compromise with the graphics and gameplay means more for you than shiny characters then you can't find a better sandbox. Unfortunately. There should be a really good new sandbox game, we shouldn't be left by one originated from 2001.

Not a stunt, genuine question.  But I did want to point out that the TLE server is a time locked server so you are playing what the game was a decade ago.  It's telling that you aren't playing the latest and greatest.  :)

I originally played Runescape around same time as above poster. Even after playing many other MMOs since then  I believe those Runescape quests were some of the best around. After reading this thread I almost want to play again just to see what new quests exist.  Easy to dismiss this game but it does have lots of content and those quests are lots of fun.

I get it, it's an old game.  So is Ultima Online along with many other games that seem to be better than this.. but why then are so many people playing and streaming this game?  What is it about this game that has so many people still playing vs a UO, DAOC etc.  I don't get it.

RS has much better graphics than UO, and it's not a dying game. It's growing, has huge plans for the future and has a big studio behind it. Does UO or DAOC get new content every week ?

I played runescape and still do (OSRS) because it offers me freedom to do as I want, along with witty questing that you actually want to do, achievements of obtaining wealth and max skills that other mmos don't have. PVP where you lost all you're wearing if you die(The combat is a bit stale with its random damage, which is why DFO is my favorite mmo).

I am more about gameplay over graphics(there is a limit though) and I'd rather play Runescape than  any of the themepark WoW clones out there or half ass attempt at mmorpgs like TESO/GW2.

When you say DFO, do you mean Darkfall?
