I stopped playing MMOs for a long time and have recently gotten back into them. Before I quit, I played EQ1 for the better part of 10 years, and then spent a couple more years dabbling in other games, largely Asian, with a stint of playing DDO with family members. I tried WoW and didn't really get into it, and my venture into EQ2 was not super-productive-- I hooked up with a guild of people I knew from EQ1, but they were all high level and I played at the wrong times to actually play with them.

Since I decided to start playing again, I have been messing around in the relaunched Wildstar (because I had gotten a beta invite to the relaunch test server, and it seems kind of old school in some ways), Dragon Nest (because Son #1 recommended it), and Mabinogi (because Son #3 recommended it). Don't ask me what my sons are smoking, I don't know. Heh.

I am willing to buy into a game and even pay a sub. I've been thinking about FFXIV, The Secret World, or ESO. Are any of those worth the money?

I don't mind helping you out here. I've played MMORPG's since 2002, starting with DAOC. I've played most of them out there and have taken quite a few long breaks from MMORPG's. So what is it you're actually looking to get out of a MMORPG? What are your top 3 most important features, and why?

In general, I'd recommend either of those games you've listed. The Secret World has a setting unique to the genre, and unless you're familiar with the books, you may feel a bit lost as I did. The game provides plenty of challenge for both solo and group gamers. Building your character is pretty complex and if you don't know how you want to build the character ahead of time, you will gimp yourself, because while you may be able to get all 500+ skills from the skill wheel, you can only max out 1-2 weapons and there are several weapons to be had.

FFXIV is probably the MMORPG I would hold in highest esteem. If you want a traditional themepark game with interesting class and crafting mechanics, with a great story that is built upon and continued with each expansion, then FFXIV is for you. Combat is a bit less helter skelter and more strategic use of your abilities. The graphics are pretty amazing too.

I'm a Warcraft fan, so I'm playing WoW. I'm not one of those Vanilla veterans or a veteran at all, because I might play the game 3-6 months out of each expansion before not playing it for a year or more. Hell, I've skipped two 3 expansion releases. But the lore is interesting and engaging, and the gameplay is fun. The raid or get shunned atmosphere sucks, and the community is a bunch of selfish idiots for the most part. But you can experience almost everythign in the game by queing up for it, you just won't get the best gear if you care about that.

ESO and TSW are both worth playing.  Just to check out the worlds they create.  But I never reached max level in them.  ESO goes nurf crazy and take their time fixing bugs, but the graphics and some of the quests are great.  TSW gets to be tedious but they have some good ideas with the conspiracy quests.  My current favorite are GW2 and Marvel Heroes, and I'm playing SWTOR for awhile because thay've streamlined leveling so I can enjoy just doing the class questing and the new storyline they started.

Aion since you said you play Eastern mmos. Lineage 2 is worth a shot also if you have never tried it. Age Of Wushu has a steep learning curve but also has alot to offer.

The Secret World definitely gets my vote. I never really got into FFXIV, but enough people seem to like it that it should be a good bet. Different tastes and all that. ESO would be a good choice as well IMO, as would SWTOR as Octagon mentioned above.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

There's nothing in the post about what you seek and what you liked in EQ and DDO... but in general, TSW is definitely worth the money. I think there's a sale currently, but if you miss it there is a buddy key thread on the TSW subforum here, with that key you can try it for free - and it has frequent sales anyways. It's a b2p game with optional sub (and also an optional lifetime sub offer).

I'd say if you like adventure games, the modern day setting, story and writing, investigations, conspiration theories, and cosmetics, TSW is a good pick. Same goes for roleplay, and friendly / mature playerbase.
If you prefer more "mmo-ish" elements like crafting, housing, unique gear, endless raid grind (ok, that one is actually in TSW too), or pvp focus, then it's maybe not the best choice

Yes EQ2 is good,he already played that though.
Well my fave EQ1 style game is FFXI still going and recently announced content updates are going to continue so the game is around for quite some time yet.FFXI is really one of the very few games like EQ1,it has changed a lot to be able to solo now but still only offers xp for killing stuff,no linear questing and no hand holding anywhere,no markers of any kind.

I feel the market is so bad,i went back playing and searching for some good single player games,i am not going to force myself to play bad games just because.
